  1. Last summer at the Idaho USPSA Sectional he showed me a prototype he was working on for an IDPA holster. Looked pretty good, but haven't seen the final yet. COM also has belts, mag pouches and cell phone holsters out of kydex (wearing one right now). All really well made gear. Rick is a competitor and sponsors a lot of matches in Idaho, so he's a real supporter of the sport and has the first hand experience of what would be a good product for games plus carry. I know there are a lot of manufacturers out there and everybody has their favorites, but COM has become my go-to guy for kydex gear.

Support the guys who support the sport, right?

  2. Yeah, I have some COM stuff. Seeing as I'm in Idaho, I see Rick from COM now and then at matches. In fact, I just ordered the same holster from him for Limited and 3 gun. Unfortunately his website needs to be updated to include his latest designs, but it seems like he's always coming up with something new.

  3. Travis G. had that flash target set up at a recent local 3-gun match. It was attached to a steel silhouette plate at 440 yds and at that distance it made calling your hits much easier. Near as I can tell, it worked every time (well, you have to hit the target first for it to flash...), and was very noticeable to the shooter and RO back at the firing position. Travis also put the strobe (or whatever it was) inside a white 5 gal bucket that was laying on its side with the open end facing us to help it be more visible. I didn't get a chance to check it out up close so can't comment more on how it was set up, other than to say I got lucky and made it go off on my first shot...

It was mid-day, partly cloudy IIRC. But I'm sure it would work as advertised even in full sunlight.

  4. Anybody know what a .40 cal 5" bushing barrel / standard slide weighs for comparision?

My Eagle with bushing barrel and std slide weighs 39.6 oz with an empty 140 mm mag (Dawson basepad), or 38.2 oz with the standard 126 mm STI mag.

Is this what you were looking for?

    Yes, THANKS !

So add a tungsten guide rod for the same weight and feel as bull barrel?

Thats a good question, and I've wondered that myself. But for now, I'm liking it the way it is. At some point I may try out a tungsten guide rod, but the part I like the best is it feels and shoots very similar to my .45 Trojan.

  5. The best way I've ever heard somebody describe it is a "snap" vs "push". Try shooting Bill drills with each load, and compare your HF's. Last time I did that, there was a .2 sec gain using the 200 gr MSWC's compared to the 230 gr MRN's. May not sound like much, but expand that over a 32 rnd field course, and now we're talking serious time. Guess I must shoot better with the "snap" than push...

  6. I'm all for yelling "Stop" for a squib or other safety issue, but, after the start signal, I don't think that I would interfere with the RO running the shooter for REF.

Same here. If I'm the shooter, I don't want to be stopped for REF. It's a bit frazzling for the nerves to be stopped when you haven't done anything wrong and think you're going to be DQ'd.

I agree. I was the shooter once when there was a REF that I couldn't see from where I was. A bunch of people yelled STOP, and my heart sank because I thought I had done something horribly wrong or got somebody hurt somehow.

  7. I love my Vertx pants for shooting sports. I am also excited because they are coming out with a lightweight material for summer.

I have been eying the TruSpec pants as well.

5.11's just don't fit me very well.

+1 or 2 on the Vertx pants. I wasn't all that sure about the 2% spandex in them when I ordered, but my wife assured me that this is a nice feature (evidentally some women's jeans have spandex in them?). So far they've been comfortable and durable, and I like the low-profile casualness (is that a word?) about them.

Thats good news about the summer weight material. I was wondering if they were going to do that.

  8. Just for my curiousity, can somebody tell me how much offset is there on the SPR-E? I had a hard time telling. If it's greater than 1.5-2" (more or less what the PEPR has), it might be what I'm looking for. For consistency, may be measure from the leading edge of the mounting surface to the rear of the forward ring. I'll re-measure the offset of the PEPR when I get home to have something to compare it to.

    Thanks everyone!

With my crude measuring I would say 2.1 inches

And I just took a few sight pictures and I tend to place my nose about 1/2 inch back of the charging handle with no shadowing. If I move right up and touch my nose to the charging handle it does shadow.

    Greg,

Thanks. I came up with 1.4" of off-set with the PEPR (leading edge of the mounting surface to rear of the forward ring). So sounds like the SPR-E will do what I need it to do. Appreciate you taking the time to measure yours.

The SPR-E with the VFZ mount is sounding better and better. Thanks everyone. You guys are an awesome source of information!

  9. I have both mounts with Milletts in them. The Larue will allow for more eye relief. It is also lower than the PEPR so keep that in mind as it will affect your cheek/stock fit.

I have yet to have either mount change zero when left attached.

    Craig

Great feedback! I was hoping somebody had both and could give a comparo on the two mounts. This helps. A lot. Thanks for the heads-up on the height of the SPR-E.

  10. Tried the PEPR when I shot for Burris. Couldnt take it and went back to the Larue.

Ditto, except I went back to the JP mounts.

You have some choices, obviously the LaRue or JP mounts, which move the mount point forward with an effective cantilever. Of you can get a Firebird handguard with a barrel nut extension that extends the top rail. Besides adding strength, you get a few more inches of rail. I attached an image illustrating the extension.

The bbl nut extended rail looks like it would work very well for what I'm trying to achieve. Unfortunately I already have a handguard... but I'll keep it in mind. Maybe on my next build!

  11. Thanks for all the feedback.

As far as my stance, dunno whatcha call it, but I'm running my AR with the stock extended out as far as I need to get the proper eye-relief with the Millett, stronghand elbow in, forward lean, nose about an inch or so shy of the charging handle because of the eye relief I need. Thx for the link to JM's video. It looks like he is not completely square to the target, and slightly bladed. Can't argue with anything Jerry does. I'll try that.

Curiously enough, I've yet to have my PEPR go off zero. Still pretty dialed in after a year. But I'll readily acknowledge that there is a difference in quality between the two and I'm not 3-gunning every weekend.

  12. Hi everyone. I'm currently using a Burris PEPR scope mount with a Millett DMS 1-4 scope on my AR for 3-gun, and have been looking at options to try and position the scope a little further forward. I currently have the PEPR mounted as far forward on the upper rails and the Millett is as far forward in the rings, and I still get some shadowing when in certain shooting positions. If I move my head back, the shadowing goes away. Seems to me I need to move the scope 1/2 to 3/4" further forward if I can.

Or maybe there is something I can do with my stance?.

I read a bunch of threads on the LaRue SPD-E scope mount (and others) in the hopes that it'll position the scope further forward than the PEPR, but before I took the plunge I wanted to know if I had any other options. FWIW, I prefer to shoot NTCH (or as close as I can get it), and use the typical shoulders squared up to the target and support hand as far forward on the handguard. But my current arrangement does not always allow for that without any shadowing.

I did have a crazy idea about putting a rail on the top of my JP VTac FF handguard and mount the PEPR partly on the FF handguard, but the more I think about it, I don't think that is such a good idea...

Down the road I may look at different scopes, but for my first couple of years of 3-gun the Millett is adequate, but I would be willing to upgrade the mount if that will help. I realize that the Millett is one of the longer 1-4x scopes out there, hence part of my problem... but it's not that much longer than say the Burris XTR 1-4, and has about the same eye relief. I have a local 3-gun match this weekend and will be checking out what the competition is using, but would welcome any advice you guys have.

    Thanks

  13. I sat for years using a single stage, but when I received my 550 with the strong mount and roller handle from our Host I set it up on top of 2x4s spacers to try loading while standing. Used it that way for a couple of weeks to make sure I liked it, then rebuilt my bench. I find that position pretty comfortable.

  14. Victor,

I had to take a couple breaks this summer as well, and coming back each time actually made me more aware of my mechanics more than when I was shooting regularly. My breaks were work induced, and they were about two to three weeks each time. Not shooting for a while made me appreciate coming back to it even more.

  15. I think I'm following you. So by closing your eyes, you're removing (unintentionally maybe) any distractions, and allowing you to focus on what you're doing (shaving).

By removing or getting rid of distractions, what you're calling a filtering process, you're able to get into the state of concentration, aka the zone, easier....?

That's the garter belt thing from Bull Durham!

    Interesting. Thanks

  16. Never said I didn't want an explanation, just that I may or may not understand!

It wasn't for fun, but I do occassionally shave with my eyes closed because I'm in the shower and I'm trying to keep water/soap out of my eyes.

So I guess what you're getting at is that I am having to visualize the actions of shaving because I'm not watching myself in a mirror?
