  1. It don't matter as long as it works. I'll be testing the Young's Super Light carriers this weekend and report back on reliability, recoil impulse versus a full weight carrier, etc. Mick
  2. And there's another National Champion at Rio Salado that prefers no FA, and went so far as to push Sun Devil to make uppers with shell deflector but no FA. I paid nothing for that info... Mick
  3. Sounds like you're getting there. When you talk with Lon at Tac Sol, have him send you a couple of extractor springs, if not a new firing pin as well. I'm wondering if the spring is weak, and the shell is slipping a little, meaning its getting hit by the lower beveled portion of the firing pin. A cut down 10/22 extractor spring also works and you can use that to tune the extractor tension. How is the ejection? If the empty case is just dribbling out, then that is a clue. Also make sure the face of the chamber is clean and there is no crud stopping the bolt going fully forward. Mick
  4. My Young's Super Light carriers arrived. On a set of not so good kitchen scales, they weigh in at 6.6oz. Mick
  5. Great to hear. I'm building a lightweight upper for my son to learn to start shooting matches with. Base will be a Daniel Defense 16" lightweight barrel, midlength gas with pinned low profile gas block. I was originally looking at an MI SS12 handguard, then noticed the Loki. I'll probably go with the Loki... ;-) Mick
  6. You can polish the area under the bolt that rides over the hammer as shown in your pic. You must use a rounded hammer in these setups. Are you using a notched hammer, by chance? The area I was referring to is the part right in front of the recoil spring assembly that sits on top of the bolt. This part rides in the charging handle slot in the upper. Any drag here can stop the bolt coming fully forward. Do you happen to have one of the CMMG "anti-jam" charging handles or filled the charging handle with epoxy to make one? I ask because I've seen these types of issues before. Mick That is very nice to hear. When it runs I like the upper a lot. I took the bolt back out and took a couple of shots of where I see it rubbing. All are around the back of the bolt where the recoil spring is. Just to make sure before I take out the dremel, that is the area you are suggesting that I polish?
  7. Anyone try the Loki free float handguards? They come in 9", 12" and 14.5" lengths and are pretty well priced. http://www.lokiweaponsystems.com/products/m4-handguards/ Mick
  8. Yes. It's the carrier that is reduced mass. A JP low mass rifle buffer is basically the same weight as a standard carbine buffer. Mick
  9. My Tac Sol upper runs fine on a JP trigger/hammer. Also runs fine on another lower with bobbed DPMS hammer and JP yellow springs. You might have a little drag on the bolt, not allowing it to come fully into battery. Look at the assembly immediately in front of the recoil spring. Any marks there? if so, you have some dragging going on. Take a dremel felt wheel and polish up the sides to a nice mirror finish. problem should go away. Mick
  10. All of my JP triggers are paired with JP speed hammers. If I take a GI rounded hammer and cut the tail off, would trigger pull quality be the same as if I used the JP hammer? Mick
  11. There are two Young light carriers; Young Light Carrier http://www.youngmanufacturing.net/product-info.php?pid102.html Young Super Light; http://www.youngmanufacturing.net/product-info.php?pid135.html I believe the Super Light is about 0.5 oz heavier than the JP LMOS carrier. When my Super Light carriers arrive I'll weigh them. I'll also be making comparisons against rifles with Colt M-16 carriers and the Super Lights. Mick
  12. Try a standard weight buffer with standard recoil spring. Ejection should be in the 2-3 o'clock area. What ammo are you using? It could be underpowered? Mick
  13. There's a special buy on Young carriers going on till the end of May. I just picked up a carrier and a complete bolt/carrier assembly at a pretty good discount. http://calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?p=6459800 You'll have to call and speak to Dave about the Super Light carriers Mick
  14. When running the low mass carriers, is it adviseable to change to a different recoil spring or is the standard CAR buffer spring perfectly fine? Mick
  15. Never thought of Young's and didn't know they were in Phoenix! I'll be picking up one of their Super light carriers tomorrow. Thanks for the tip. Mick
  16. With a good muzzle brake already in place and a standard CAR buffer, is there any extra benefit to using a JP Low Mass bolt carrier without the adjustable gas block? Mick
  17. Charlie Drissel makes one... Mick
  18. Kelly, how about a different color for the BDC points with the ability to dial in separate elevation? Would give the ability to tune each rifle with your load of choice. Mick
  19. yes. No problems whatsoever. I'm running a carbine adjustable stock on both an 18" and a 20" build that I just completed. Lots of other guys at Rio Salado running 18"-20" barrels with adjustable stocks. Mick
  20. Buy the JP traditional trigger kit and be done with it.... Mick
  21. If you want something a little different, Sun Devil is now making a flat top upper with shell deflector but no forward assist. Also has no M4 feed ramp cuts, so they can be used with either rifle or m4 barrel extensions... Most forged upper and lowers come from a handful of forging houses. They are then machined to final dimensions. Some do the machining in house, others contract out the machining and final anodizing. I always like to make sure that the end of the receiver (where the barrel nut threads begin) is exactly perpendicular to the rail (stand it up on a flat surface and see if it leans). Mick
  22. Any problems with P-mags dropping free? Mick
  23. Does your POF lower have the tensioning screw like the Mega and Sun Devil lowers? Mick
  24. I have a chance to pick up a new POF gen III lower for under $150.... Mick
  25. Anyone using a POF Gen III lower? Billet lower, integral trigger guard, beveled mag well with ambidextrous bolt and mag releases. Mick
