  1. What sucks? Having to wait another year to get to do this again! Great match Dean, thanks to you and your crew for all the hard work that went into this and we can't wait to shoot it again next year.

And for those who weren't there... stage 6, three shooters on the line, all with shotguns, and 64 spinning, rotating, falling and flying targets downrange. Easily the best stage of the match!

  2. I've run two Versamax shotguns in the last two seasons. The first was stock except for a +1 tube extension. I shot ten matches with it in 2012 plus a bunch of test firing and a little practice. I didn't clean it for all of 2012, just lubricated it before each match. The gun never failed. I sold it to another shooter at the end of 2012 and so far as I know he has never had a failure with it either. My current Versamax has also never failed. It is not stock, I had Triangle Shooting Sports weld the lifter, open the load port and do a little other work on it. I also added the Carbon Arms one piece tube. One of the part time salesmen at the range I manage also competes with a Versamax, he has never had a failure with his either.

  3. So I said all that to ask this:

    • should I just chalk it up to the ammo?
    • should I try to modify/replace the shell stop so it is not denting the Remington brass?
    • am I asking too much that the gun handles all brands well?
    • am I asking too much from the ammo?
    • Should I get another spring and cut it to be longer than the 25" I'm currently using? I believe I saw either Lazy Eyed Sniper or M24shooter say the ideal length was 25-28" (and that was for the +3 930 SPX) Mine is cycling 100% by hand now, including the last round which comes out with decent enough force it's just I'm kind of kicking myself for cutting it when the spring wasn't the problem.

    Appreciate any input.

I read and re-read your post and I don't seem to see were you describe how the gun functions when shooting it. Have you shot it?

  4. I just bought a Versa Max Tactical yesterday. It is being shipped to Benny Hill and he has assured me when he finishes it will run like a scaled Abe with diarrhea. TMI yes I know. But I think we all have faith in Benny. FWIW

Benny did my VMT. You will not be disappointed.

  5. My shooting buddy runs an SLP. He added a Briley bolt handle, sent the gun to Jeff at C-Rums to have the load port opened up and the lifter welded. It also has a Nordic +2 tube added.

To the OP, in my opinion a +1 is not the way to go if you're doing the load two method. +2 allows you to add two more shells immediately after the start signal should a stage design require it. I find myself adding 2 more at the start far more often than needing to completely refill the gun after shooting it dry.

  6. I move my gun more than most, but I prefer to shoot the plates as stationary as possible. I start with the top plate, then move to the lower of the next two upper plates, hit it then move over to the other upper plate and take it. The bottom plates are now stuck in the bottom position as there is no more weight on the top to spin the rack. Seems complicated but is very simple in practice and I've never had a problem clearing a star this way.

  7. I'm starting to suspect that for some reason there is bad blood between Mossberg and some "3-gun" manufacturers and/or smiths that is at the root of all this bad mouthing with no specific defails. If that's it, give us details. If a company has been behaving badly, they deserve to be punished for it. I steered newbies away from Ruger and S&W for more than a decade based on politics alone.

To ask if brand loyalty or market dislike for a particular brand has anything to do with a shotguns use in 3 gun is off the mark, I think. It has been my experience over the years ( and I've been doing this nearly 30 years) that competition shooters are by far the least affected by brand loyalty, ready to jump ship in a minute if something truly better comes along.

If you want to discount anecdotal evidence that is fine. I have no idea what the specific problems with the 930 might be, nor do I care. When I'm at a match and someone has a problem during a stage I usually look to see what gun their using. Of the 'big four' Benelli, Versamax, SLP and 930, I see far more problems occurring with the 930's than with any of the others. What the problem might be is of no concern to me, it's either working or it's not, and right now it seems like a great deal of the time, if it's a 930, it's not.

  8. Some of you may recognize the name Jerry Barnhart. Jerry was USPSA National Champion ten times and brought the first red dot optic to an open gun.

    BC

That is not correct. Jerry was the first to win the US Nationals with a red dot in 1989, but I remember seeing people experimenting with them in early 1988.

    Tim

BTW, Jerry was, and I'm sure still is, one hell of a shooter.

  9. The way you load shouldn't matter in tube length unless you always plan on emptying the tube. The stage layout plays more of a role in that

I think he is referring to loading after the start. having a 10rd or 12 round extension allows your loads to match the way the shells are staged on your body. A +1 or +3 (added to an 8 round tube) does not match a twins load.
