Rest easy. I sent my VMT Zombie to TSP and was extremely happy with the results. I recommend their work without reservation.

It is not unsafe to fire 5.56 from a 223 chamber. There could be function issues from higher than normal pressures is the 223 chamber is on the tight side, but it would be at no time unsafe. This is a myth fueled by the internet. I would also be willing to bet his barrel is chambered in 5.56 so it really doesn't matter.

I could not vote because there is no choice that reflects my views. 3 Gun Nation is different from USPSA which is different from Outlaw matches which is different than IDPA Multigun. In my mind trying to unify all of the 3 gun choices under one set of rules would be like saying USPSA, IDPA, Bianchi and Steel Challenge should all merge into one set of rules so that the competitor has an easier time learning the rules and will always face a consistent challenge at each match.
3 gun unification is an solution searching for a problem that does not exist.

Always be suspect of the claim, 'we don't know what maintenance was done, that might be why it jams". I bought my first VersaMax in April of 2012 and shot it for the rest of 2012 with no maintenance. I shot 10 or 11 matches, including the 2012 FN 3 Gun and all I did to the gun was lube it before each match. The gun was unmodified except for a Roulette Tactical +1 end cap and a Briley bolt handle. It never malfunctioned. I sold it in December 2012 and replaced it with one of the green zombie models. This one I sent to Triangle Shooting Sports for the usual mods, welded lifter, opened load port, internal smoothing and bolt lightening. When I got it back I added the Carbon Arms full length mag tube with a +1 cap. Again, flawless functioning with no maintenance. I later added a +2 end cap but did not increase the magazine spring length so it only extended about 3". After about 4 matches I had two failures for the last round in the tube to fully release into the lifter. I replaced the short mag spring with one that extended about 8" past the tube (still short of the recommended 12") and have had no problems since. So in two years with a VMT I have had a total of two malfunctions, both attributable to a under length magazine spring.
Wile no gun is 100% reliable, a reliable gun will run when it is dirty. If it must be clean to work then it is not reliable.
My take on the best choices for a 3 Gun shotgun are as follows...
Benelli M2. Still the top of the heap, king of the mountain. I see them jam occasionally, but I think that is less the gun and more the ammo choice. Wile quick and light they do pack a kick compared to other choices. This leads shooters to choose lighter AA ammo that occasionally fails to cycle. I also see more M2 shooters have more trouble knocking plates over than any other brand of gun. Again, not the guns fault, just the choice to shoot very light loads. The most expensive gun to set up, but worth it if cost is not an issue.
Benelli Vinci, VersaMax, Beretta 1301. All closely tied for second place behind the M2. The Vinci is more expensive to set up but is getting very positive reviews. The VMT and 1301 are shootable right out of the box, both can benefit from a little work but it is not mandatory.
FN SLP. Once a great choice but FN changed the gas cylinder and the reliability seems to have suffered some. A nice gun but being in the same price range as the very reliable VMT and 1301 keeps it from being a good choice, at least until they solve the cylinder problem. My shooting partner has an SLP and since being worked over by C Rums it runs flawlessly.
Mossberg JMT/930. This should have been a top choice but reliability is spotty. Some work, some don't. I see more of these jam in matches as compared to all of the above combined. On the other hand, I have shot with a couple from Maryland who both shoot 930's and I haven't ever seen theirs jam.

I don't think I have ever heard anyone complain about the durability of a Vortex Razor. Were are you getting this info?

We sell a lot of Smiths at my shop and I find them to be very high quality rifles. We use two of the Sports, their lowest cost model, as rental guns and they have held up well. The first one started key-holing after 15,000+ rounds and Smith replaced barrel under their lifetime warrany.

Registration so easy I don't even know how I did it. Seriously, at 20 minutes after 7 I was still trying to figure out how to register when I got an e-mail saying my registration was received and I would receive an e-mail at a future date as to the status of the registration. Color me confused, but successful!

So three trips to Topton next year. Shotgun in the spring, 3 man/3 gun in the summer and the rifle match in the fall!

I didn't know they made one specifically for the Versa. I used the rear sight they sell for the Walther PPK.

Another great trip to Topton. Dean always puts on a great match, but I think even he didn't realize how good a job he (and his staff) did this year. Six fun, challenging stages and we were done by 1:30!
Now, another year till the next one...

You will be fine. Here is a picture of my rifle, NSR 13.5" and a 14.5" barrel with Surefire break pinned and welded. As you can see you will have a good half inch of clearance.

Welding the lifter is like buying insurance. You might never have needed it, but the one time you do, and you don't have it you'll be wishing you had.
It's a cheap mod, fast and easy to have done, and beats the hell out of messing up one time and leaving half your thumb nail in the gun.

Given the restrictions you imposed I would recommend the Beretta 1301. The Versa does not come in a 24" version and the 24" Benelli's are near impossible to find. You might want to consider a 26" Versamax as 10+1 is far better than 9+1.

Ha, apply to your club! Beg enough and I might bless you with my membership! This picture, from 1985, that's right, 85! Back when single stack was the only stack. The gun has a comp, because no comp was so 1984, and I don't feel like scanning my pics from 84. BYW, the match is the 1985 Oregon State Championships and I will bless 'special super secret old timer blessings' on the first person who knows who the RO in the picture is!

Here's my 3 Gun load out. Top is my cart w/ cooler and range bag. Next row is ear plugs, glasses, lens cleaning kit, minor first aid (Aleve and Advil, finger nail clippers, nail file and band-aids) and cleaning equipment. Pens, extra chamber flags (someone always shows up needing a flag) and single-point slings for rifle and shotgun. Safariland ELS rig, magazines for pistol & rifle and a Brownells 3 Gun Bag for transport.
Guns are Remington Versamax Tactical w/ Carbon Arms +2 tube and action work done by Triangle Shooting Sports, XS rear sight added by me. Chokes are Light Mod and Cylinder Bore. Rifle built by me, Noveske lower and rail, Adams Arms 16" barrel, NP3 coated Les Baer BCG, Magpul stock and Surefire muzzle break. Rifle mags are Magpul, a Nordic converted 48rd, 40rd, two 30rd and one 20rd. Scope is the Vortex Razor HD. Pistol is an SVI frame, Caspian slide, Schueman barreled 9mm, also built by me. Most stages I use the two mags below the gun, a 21rd and 19rd, giving me 40 rounds at the start.

Edge is not IDPA legal due to the dust cover length.An Edge, 5 or 6". The 6" will offer a very slight increase in shooter accuracy but that is really more theoretical than practical. A 5" Edge will be multi-sport legal. Good for 3 Gun, USPSA Limited (minor of course)and ESP Division for IDPA.

I've already done that. I shot my first VMT stock for all of 2012, with the addition of a +1 cap as the only modification. It never failed me.
