  1. Favorite poems? Check this one out. http://www.s2company.com/files/readings/dinasvawr.htm
  2. I've seen Bringing up Baby twice, and while it has its moments, His Girl Friday is much better. Plus, Katherine Hepburn never did much for me. Audrey Hepburn... now there was a knockout. I'll put in a plug for one of my favorite classic westerns. "High Noon" with Gary Cooper and Grace Kelley. I love the theme song and the multiple cuts back to the clock as noon approaches. The two characters I groove on that others might not notice too much are the kid who is willing to take on the Millers, and the older guy who works for the Hispanic Saloon owner. Both of these characters are clearly ready to lend a hand, and manage to retain their honor when the rest of the town turns yellow.
  3. I love "His Girl Friday" with Cary Grant. The sheer pace of the dialogue is awesome and every time I watch it I pick up another detail that cracks me up. It's the quintessential screwball romantic comedy and is definitely a classic.
  4. I think this is a great thread as for some time now I've had post-envy or dot-envy. It's nice to see others notice this stuff, too. I've contemplated padding my post count with fluff posts, but this is the first time I've done it. Congratulations Flexmoney! Keep up the good work!
  5. Ron, I guess I will send the gun over to Dave Lauck to have the thing tweaked. I have one of his single stack 1911's, and it's a great piece. It has a light rail on it and doesn't fit my 1911 holsters, otherwise I'd use it instead of my Kimber in L10. I just know Dave is more into carry guns than limited blasters and I'm not sure I could talk him into a sub 3 lb trigger. BTW Dave's son Chris (age 16) and his partner came close to eliminating Cooley and Voight at this year's match in the shootoff. I guess shooting apples don't fall far from the tree. Gave us mere mortals hope to see the big dogs working hard to beat a kid in his first match. Any thing else I should ask him to do while he has it? Fit a spare extractor, long firing pin (or are those just drop-in?),etc.
  6. Ron: What's the best way to deactivate the slide lock, and do you have someone here in the state who does this sort of work. Thanks again for all the help.
  7. I don't think the follwer could be hitting the slide stop because the round is still in the mag depressing the follower. I've had pretty much every jam in the book before, but this one was new to me. I know that shooting to slide lock in limited is rarely the right thing to do, but I'm concerned that if I deactivate the slide lock, at some point I'll lose count of rounds fired and get a click instead of a bang. What's the concensus out there? Do I detent as per BrianH or do away with the slide lock entirely per the wise Ron Ankeny. I'm also very curious as to the cause of this malfunction and if there is a another less radical fix.
  8. Breaking in a new STI today I had three identical malfunctions where the slide locked back with one round left in the mag. The last round was partially forward, about .25 inch. I couldn't tell for sure, but I don't think the round was hitting the slide stop and forcing it up. This happened with two different mags. Has anyone run across this before? Is there a fix? Do I just chalk it up to a weird break-in voodoo curse and hope it goes away? The load was factory UMC 180gr. FMJ. Thanks for the help!

    Joke

A man walks into a junkyard and tells the manager, "I need a rearview mirror for my Yugo." The manager thoughtfully strokes his chin, considers the man's statement and replies, "It's a deal."
  10. Thanks for the info about the crimped primer with S&B. I guess I'll go to Wal-Mart and get a couple boxes of everything and let the gun decide what it likes. Thanks.
  11. If anyone hasn't seen "A Simple Plan" I can highly recommend it. The cascade of bad decisions by seemingly decent characters leads to a truly "downer" ending. Normally I'm, "tough enough to eat the boogers out of a dead man's nose" (Full Metal Jacket), but this one got to me. Anyone else see this?
  12. Ron, Thanks for the offer to break in the new blaster! BTW I wanted to shoot your qualifier in the worst way, but I'm on call this week (with all partners out of town, and nobody to switch with). I felt like the classic Eastern Dude shooting in Casper and Dubois (the brand new gear, high ignorance factor, etc.). My plan is to wear most of the bluing off the STI this winter with dry fire, wrap some athletic tape around the grip, and start clawing my way up the classes in the spring. As it was explained to me the rules of shooting are: 1. Look good 2. Shoot good 3. If you can't shoot good, see #1

    Fast Draws

Unless this guy is Bob Munden, I'd have to see it to believe it. Personal best: 5 yards, hands at side, any hit on a regulation IPSC target counts, thoroughly warmed up, was .73. My practice buddy turned in a .71 on the next draw, and this "record" for the two of us has remained for quite some time now. Cold shot and caring about hitting more than just anywhere on the target and my times are around 1.4. Just call me pokey.
  14. I ordered an STI Lexor from Chuck at Shooter's Connection and was astonished at the delivery time. It was less than a week from order to pick-up, and most of that time was snail mail for the FFL from my local dealer to get there. Great service! I ordered a holster and mag pouches at the same time from a different vendor, but I'm not expecting these to get here any time soon. I feel like a kid who got a bike for Christmas and has to wait for spring to ride it.
  15. Ron, I have to agree that Wyoming is great. I got stuck in a "traffic jam" here the other day (had to sit through two light changes), and had to laugh at myself for getting impatient when I thought back to Kansas City and some of the snarls there.
  16. Hate to show my ignorance, but why a long firing pin?
  17. Jon: I plan on doing the reloading once I stockpile enough .45 ammo so that I don't have to play switcheroo with the Dillon too often. I've considered getting a second 550B just so I don't have to mess around with the press so much. I am unfortunately lazy and have very limited time to reload. The problem is the bright and shiny new pistol will be here begging to be shot long before I can get a new load squared away. I figured a case or two of factory ammo would give me the cases for load development and still let me wring out the new gun. Maybe the question should be: who makes the best brass? Or what factory load would you shoot in a match if forced to do so? I get to matches so seldom that finding a local reloader for hire is going to be hard. I currently live in a state (WY) that has a smaller population than my previous city (Kansas City).
  18. I'm going to make the switch from a SS .45 to a double stack .40 STI. What is the best factory ammo with regards to low recoil, makes major, brass life, low cost, etc. I see ads for Sellier and Bellot ammo in SGN at attractive prices, but I have no experience with this brand. I realize this is pre-reloading question, but it seemed to fit best here. Thanks for the help.
  19. Ron: Thanks for the encouragement. I did find an "action shooting" club here in Gillette, but there is no IPSC or IDPA affiliation. I hear there are a fair amount of bowling pin executions. I haven't had the chance to shoot with these guys yet, but I think any sort of shooting in front of an audience is good for me, as the jitters are always out there lurking. I picture all you regular posters (3+ dots) as M-GM class because you guys seem to know an awful lot about this IPSC business, that's why I put that "no great feat" line in the original post.
  20. I just checked the USPSA website and learned that I made it into Limited 10 B class by the skin of my teeth, 60.617%. I'm sure that for most of the folks on this forum this is no great feat, but for me, this rocks! I took a shooting class in April and got bit by the blasting bug, and since have struggled with stance, positions, grip, holsters, jamomatic pistol, inability to shoot tiny groups, and continuing inability to call shots on a consistent basis. Given the level of frustration with the above (I realize frustration is not a major tenet of zen) it was somewhat gratifying to learn I wasn't in the lower regions of D. Thanks to all the forum members and to BE, I can't imagine trying to improve without a place like this to learn from.
  21. The Outlaw Josey Wales- "It ain't for eatin', it's just for looking through."
  22. What is "KBing" and "lol", is there a post somewhere that lists the common abbreviations used by the more experienced forum dwellers? Thanks.
