  1. Ahhh, secret site, secret handshake.
  2. The PRS people don't make it any easier to inform yourself from their web site. As of right now. http://www.precisionrifleseries.com/ The front page proclaims Precision Rifle Series 2013. The items on the left, run from newest to oldest. The About button, tells of important changes coming for 2013. The Rules button, warns that the following is for 2012 Only. The Events button, lists the events for 2013. I don't care about Profiles. The Series Finale, refers to 2012. Well, I think you get the point. I would want far more current information before I signed up for anything, but maybe that is the point. Secret handshake.
  3. From what i got at the SO training in MI the rule is as he described it to me to wrap my head around. " You cannot reload except at a point of cover, and A point of cover is a point from which you can engage targets." A reload is started when you push the mag release or grab a magazine. So the instance he had was you engage five targets from one side of a wall and ran your gun empty but all targets have been engaged and you are still behind cover. You turn to run down the 10 ft long wall (gun empty) before you break cover on the opposing side to engage the last 3 targets you must reload. so as you get near the end of the wall you step and plant one foot.( forward most foot ) then step with your other foot while dropping the magazine ( keeping your original foot still planted and initiating the reload ) when that foot hits the ground and you are almost done with the reload you lift your planted foot but when it hits the ground you must be able to engage targets with no more foot movement. So this makes you think about if your going around the right side or left side of the wall which foot your going to plant so when you reset it after your reload you are right in position to engage the next set of targets. if you leave a point of cover to engage targets on the move and you have no more cover to move to you cannot reload and when you run out of bullets you are finished. Also once you take a area of cover you do not need to retreat back to reload. So you're going around a wall to engage 3 targets if you shoot 2 you do not need to go back to full cover of the first target to reload I.E once you take a space you don't give it up to the bad guy. some of the rules i like because it makes you think. not sure this helps clear anything or creates more questions. A new tribe of SOs is formed. There is a new SOI in my state that has never run a legal IDPA match. Never.
  4. If you can't get Duane Thomas to shoot it, what chance do you have getting a big name to travel?
  5. 3gn is a strange mash up of everything that has come before. There is some IMGA, IDPA, PPC, USPSA and two anywhere. You take the simplicity of two anywhere and add a laundry list of penalties that can not be consistently applied topped off by the always popular, FTE. Add to that, the Heavy exception. My main problem with 3gn is with the scoring. The notion of firing a gun at a target that counts two anywhere is a waste of ammo and puts speed ahead of marksmanship. Shooting 31 cent bullets is bad enough, but having to replace them with 41 cent bullets is painful. The notion that a target beyond 40 yards is somehow "long range" and deserves a higher penalty is laughable. I would wager that you could take all of the 3gn ROs, give them a rules test, and a sizeable number couldn't get 80% right. That is just too complicated. If you have to have special ROs for the big money matches, the general membership is being short changed. Don't get me started on mandatory reloads. Being charged more money for a classifier stage that is a waste by itself adds insult to injury. How about making classifiers optional? Prize tables are good for the 20% and not so good for the 80%. Match fees for all sorts of matches seem to be getting out of hand and the justification is the prize table. Stop the insanity. I saw competitors claim handguns off of a big match prize table and then put them back when they found out how much the shipping FFL was going to charge them. We have some local guys running a rifle match that actually said they raised the price of the match so that some series would consider them for inclusion. They took a $25 match to $35, added cold food and a T shirt and got to $100 in three years, with no prize table. Everyone got a bottle of sight paint from one of the 27 sponsors listed on the shirt. I have no idea where the rest of the sponsor merchandise ended up. This is nothing new, just taken to a new level. The skill set and follow through of the people running these matches, in my experience, does not justify the price charged. If you try to talk to them about how to improve what they are doing, they become defensive. If you won't listen, you can't learn. Rather than getting big headed about how many shooters you have, think about the shooters who started with you and aren't there any more. There are probably several reasons why and you should always want to know what they are if you want to be successful in the long term. IDPA could be a lesson on how not to treat customers.
  6. But USPSA, IDPA, SASS, ICORE, don't have a TV show and they still exist. None are based on a TV show. As an "IDPA" shooter, former member and SO. don't take your customers for granted. And Miculek is going to kick your ass. You can't take the pressure. Did I miss something? 3 Gun Nation Club Series, Regional Series, Semi Pro Series, Amateur Series aren't based on any TV shows either. It seems you forgot what you wrote on November 29 - "3GN had three people on a full time payroll in 2013. They now have something like 4-6 full time employees and 2-3 of them do nothing but make the magazine and TV show which pays for it all." Doodie Project
  7. I have worked Nationals and Indoor Nationals, as well as more local and sanctioned matches than I care to recall. I have never given a cover warning and don't want a cover warning. We all know what cover is supposed to be and while the shooter is on the clock it is their responsibility to use it. Over the years I have seen proactive SOs issue cover warnings when there was no warning called for. The shooter, in their attempt to find that magic place, wastes about 1 1/2 seconds resetting, and firing a bad shot. SOs should be seen and not heard. We can talk about it after unload and show clear. The worst was a guy who gave me the warning, I moved and I got the procedural any way. Just shut up and give it to me if you think I'm wrong. I have given my share of cover procedurals and been yelled at by "one of the best," (**) for doing it. He was still wrong and everyone there knew it. That was when I decided I wasn't being paid enough. I haven't worked another sanctioned match since and will not ever again. Thanks Dave.
  8. I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you. You are going to have to do a little work here.
  9. But USPSA, IDPA, SASS, ICORE, don't have a TV show and they still exist. None are based on a TV show. As an "IDPA" shooter, former member and SO. don't take your customers for granted. And Miculek is going to kick your ass. You can't take the pressure.
  10. 3 gun didn't need 3gn to grow and become popular. 3gn needed 3 gun as a reason to exist. It is not a symbiotic relationship. As a gate keeper, 3gn requires competitors to buy into the whole deal. Drink the kool aid, have seconds. Pay dues. In the end, 3gn is about prize tables and owning 3 gun. Neither of those things matter to 80% of the people who shoot 3 gun. 3gn is all about controlling the sponsors for 3 gun matches and driving the outlaw matches out of existence. That would be a very bad thing. The outlaw organizers have recognized it from the outset. When the TV shows dies, as they all do, the reason for 3gn dies with it. Whatever sponsorship damage 3gn will have done in the meanwhile will hurt outlaw matches for a long time. Well, maybe then we can get back to just having fun.
  11. It's pretty easy to dial bacy USPSA Production Gear for SSP/ESP. Just lose the off-set holsters and swith to basic mag pouches. Jeff Pretty easy how? None of my kydex gear is legal for IDPA. I'd rather spend that money on primers. It's really this easy. A open top STI rig is not patrol gear.Boom, problem solved . A 2 min phone call isnt "going digging". When the guy shows up on match day, who is responsible for making the call? The first time anyone sees gear is on the stage. Really now, IDPA is a concealed carry sport. Check "The Founder's Intent." Encouraging MIL/LEO to get involved is one thing. Drop leg holsters, no retention and no concealment was never the intent for the duty gear exemption. The outrage is a bit over the top. Example 2 - High level LEO shooter shows up with a Glock in a kydex holster, no retention on either the gun or the magazines. If the guy says it is duty gear, it is a little late for a note from the chief.
  12. Why does this rule exist? I would really like to do some bigger races with my duty gear. Because many of us have seen competitors show up to a sanctioned match without retention holsters and mag pouches, running STIs and saying "WTF?" If you have "duty level" retention on your gear, concealment is not an issue. Those who chose to take advantage spoiled the intent of the previous rule set. This was one change IDPA got right. Maybe the only one.
  13. One size does not fit all. In anything. Everyone who takes the time and trouble to put on an outlaw match gets feedback every time someone chooses to shoot or not to shoot their match. People vote with their money and their feet. They also tell their buddies what is good and bad in their experience. Anyone remember the CTI? I don't belong to any shooting association and don't plan on joining any. As for two anywhere, I can form my own bad habits without be encouraged by a match format. I enjoy simple straight up rules that emphasize marksmanship. I am not a fan of a track meet with guns. If foot speed means more than loading a shotgun, someone has really missed the mark on skills. If firing off a couple rounds in the general direction of a target you are not capable of hitting checks the box, the rules are wrong. Any paper target that doesn't have a head is a joke. I shoot matches to shoot with my friends. Hand out the prizes, if any, in any order you choose. I can buy anything I want for less than the total cost of most 3 gun matches and then I don't have to try to sell my prize for half price.
  14. Get the Rock River 2-stage and don't look back. They get better everytime you shoot them. I have a 20" Performance Center AR and I am certain it came with that trigger. It is better than my son's Geissele SSA that has a lot of rounds on it. I even put a Rock River in my M&P 15-22. It is the least expensive quality AR trigger available.
  15. I can't imagine a situation where a tac/rwr would be advantagous since you may not advance while reloading. Slide lock is always going to be faster.
  16. Interesting to note that Tar Heel 3 Gun ran an online registration that seems to have gone without a hitch. I guess doing that at least once every month helps. Hmmmm.
  17. I know this-The IDPA web site was basic, but functional. You could do anything you really wanted to and locate information in a logical manner. After RangeDog, NO! A complete disaster. Now it seems RangeDog is the programming juggernaut for 3GN match registration. Well, RangeDog crapped on the living room floor again. That is exactly what went wrong. Now, trying all this out live, for four matches, at the same time, on Thanksgiving; that not just naïve, that is stupid. The skill set of the individuals involved fails to support the requirements of the task.
  18. Any match that is going to use LaRue sniper targets and don't plan on keeping them level.
  19. My son and I started shooting IDPA in 2002. Over the years I shot as many as five sanctioned matches a year. I was asked to become an SO, took the course, gained experience and ended up working the Nationals and Indoor Nationals several times. I was concerned about the direction the Tiger Teams might be taking based on the rumor mill. The rumor mill was pretty accurate. My membership expired two years ago and I have not renewed. I will not renew. Needless to say, I did not recertify as an SO. The two years of no new SOs and a large number of previous SOs not recertifying is going to be a big problem for IDPA. Prior to 2005, a stage designer could mandate a Tac Load/RWR. After the rules were changed in 2005, you could not require one, except as part of the classifier. Now, with the flat footed reload rule, a Tac Load/RWR is obsolete outside of the classifier. The classifier previously had little to do with a scenario stage. Now, it is a different sport. IDPA was my first competition with firearms. I have moved on to 3-gun and tactical rifle. The new rules have dumbed IDPA down to where a Sharpshooter is a hero. There is very little left for Experts and Masters. At least the brain trust behind the new rules can feel better about their performance and not worry about the skills they do not possess or, God forbid, a 35 yard shot with a potential for a Failure to Neutralize.
  20. I put a CDI Precision bottom metal on mine and use AI mags. I understand Alpha mags are reliable for less. http://www.snipercentral.com/cdidbm.phtml
  21. Everything about the IDPA web site used to be easier, more efficient and useful. Of course, we never got updates from the air race before.
  22. The real reason there are no overlays is because IDPA would either have to make their own or use one from another sport and that ain't gonna happen.
  23. My membership expired late last year. I have been waiting for the new rulebook to decide if I would renew. I used to shoot five or six sanctioned matches a year including Nationals, the Carolina Cup and S&W. That number has decreased to zero this year. I started shooting IDPA in 2002 and became an SO in 2008. I will not recertify as an SO. They have a chance at my money, but they will not waste my time. IDPA doesn't care to hear from anyone who doesn't agree with Berryville on everything. There are a couple improvements in the rules and quite a few problems. You can be penalized for pointing near a muzzle safe point. Not past it. Near it. SOs will physically stop a shooter by grabbing them. Not me. Duty Gear is clarified. I am tired of seeing LEOs shooting IDPA without concealment while using competition gear. Low Cover is the same as vertical cover. No more shooting over the top of "cover." Cover now depends on how tall you are. Flat footed reloads. Tac loads are now officially dead. No shots over 25 yards. Why? A series 80 lever can not be removed to improve trigger performance, but a magazine safety can. Oh, unless you buy a series 70 frame or slide for your series 80. No knee pads. My left knee is about done. Flashlight rules. Really? Flashlight rules. Because there are innovative and effective designs for flashlights, those designs are banned. Artificial stiffeners in concealment is banned. Must be effective or someone invested in laundry starch. The only time I have ever seen someone drop a gun was a bad draw with the concealment wrapped around the gun. Appeals process. This is one part of USPSA that IDPA certainly doesn't need. Oh, and all those matches outside the US will require US currency to appeal. Get out of Arkansas much? English is the official language for IDPA and air traffic control. Mandated equipment checks and chrono. Some matches don't have the staff to do it in terms of numbers or knowledge. Mandatory stage previews. This will never work at S&W. Finally, for now. Match Directors may not speak ill of IDPA under threat of banishment. Second Amendment good. First Amendment not good. I can't wait to read the final version. I'll bet it looks pretty close to the draft. From the poll, it looks like only six people own XDs.
