Looking for new powder

So I have 8 pounds of WST and WSF I bought for reloading a couple years ago before I decided to get into reloading for major. From what I have seen neither of those powders are suggested. I have found a local store with Autocomp that I am picking up tomorrow. Any other powders I should look for? Will be reloading for a czechmate and a 2011. Will probably be buying some MG 124's or 115's as right now I have bayou bullets which apparently aren't good for open guns either. So basically I am rebuying all of my reloading supplies.

HS-6 is popular. I load 9 major and have loaded with Autocomp from the start. I like it and feel no need to look elsewhere currently. I have 8lbs of HS6 I picked up here and there when powder was scarce but I’ve never loaded it. Lots of people do like it judging from posts.

Why do you say that Bayou are not 'good for open' guns?  I don't believe the  hi-tek coating strips off under high velocity like plated bullets do...

@shooterdrew that thing smokes like a choo-choo.  What bullet/coating was that?

That's when I bought the powder I have. I had to have some reloading supplies for school and of course it was during the big shortage and sky high prices so I bought what I could find to get by.

I read somewhere that lead fouled up comps as mentioned and that some lead bullets came apart under major loads.

Man shooterdrew. That was some smoke! At least you can tell that there’s a lot of gas going through the top of the comp and not out the front end.

For the OP, I’m really liking ramshot silhouette and Aa7. There’s a lot of people who like autocomp but It felt a bit snappy. Hs6 felt good in my pistol but i couldn’t get the groups I liked. I’m running a Shorty with no popples. Good luck to you and happy loading!

What is your TrueBlue load for 9 major?

I started with TB in 9Major almost a decade ago, but looked elsewhere after 2 slides cracked using it. Pressures get crazy real fast with it at shorter OAL's too.

I do still really like it as a 9 minor PCC load though.

Also, AA#7 under 115's is my current load. Very happy with it.

Not as dirty as I thought at first and it performs the best of all that I have tried.

Being the slowest burn rate of the powders I've tested, chamber pressures should be the lowest as well (assuming same gun, bullet, PF & OAL).

Hopefully this translates into reduced stress on gun.

I [emoji173]️ Silhouette. I run major in my modified G17 Open Gun. I ran HS-6 for awhile, but just found Silhouette to be a much more “even and balanced” powder.

An SD of less than 10 over 24 shots is about as good as I’ve ever gotten in a pistol. Makes me confident that the pistol is producing the power factor that I assume it is.

I also find Silhouette to be a good all all around powder, and it’s economical as are most of the Western Powders.

Running HS-6 out of my SV open gun now. Switched over from 3n38 because it's much cleaner reloading HS-6 on the press. 115 grain PD around 175 pf. Feels very nice. Predictable dot movement.

Not totally on topic but I will say I’ve shot a lot of 125s and some 115 JHPs. The 115 gr JHPs were my favorite. Doubtful there’s a meaningful difference on a timer but I perceived them to be a better load.

Do you mean that 3N38 fills the case to the brim and you get spills? That is pretty much what many are saying - and then they go looking for ways to make the machine smoother.

yup exactly what I meant. I load  on a 550 currently so spillage isn't terrible but after just a 100 or 200 the press needs cleaning. using HS-6, even around 9 grains still isn't nearly as full as the 3n38 load and  never spills. and due to the full case, I was forced to use 124/5's with 3n38. not enough powder for 115s (with two big barrel ports and  a slower barrel). I plan to  upgrade to a 650 soon and it will be nice to not have to worry about spilled powder as much.

I really liked the 3n38 124/5 grain load but now since ive switched, I like the dot tracking and feel of the 115's and HS-6. its been working well. AA7 was comparable but liked HS-6 more.
