Nats / Vegas Qs

How far out of town is the match? Will there be a shuttle from the match hotel, or will we need a rental car?

Are most shooters staying at the match hotel, or will people be scattered throughout Las Vegas?

Is being on the strip worth an extra couple of hundred $$? My wife is flying in Friday, and she'll be MUCH more interested in seeing Vegas than hanging out with a bunch of sweaty gun guys.

How late in the day should we plan to be shooting? I'd like to buy a few tickets or make a few afternoon/evening plans.

The range is 10 miles from the match hotel (New Orleans), and 11 miles from the south end of the strip. Remember, a mile in traffic is a long way. I do not know if there is a shuttle between the hotel and shooting range. I plan to have a rental car, since I like to come a go as I please. I'll probably be willing to give rides to people, but ad-hoc, not pre-arranged.

I'm staying at the match hotel. I've stayed on the strip many times; Bellagio, Harrahs, Treasure Island, Mirage, and Imperial Palace (yuck), so I don't feel an urge to stay there this time. Plus the table limits are likely better at the New Orleans, and they have a theatre and bowling alley (fun!). If my wife was going, she would definately want us to stay on the strip, so she could sightsee. Don't assume that the strip will be a lot more expensive than the New Orleans. My wife has seen some killer deals at many of the major hotels. Get online and start searching! If you don't already have your airline tickets, try Southwest Vacations for a combo package. Just stay away from Imperial Palace and Circus Circus.

The strip is not far from The New Orleans (1 mile from Tropicana Hotel, south end of the strip), but too far to walk. The New Orleans has a shuttle to take people to and from the strip.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong about the schedule. However, I think in the past you shot for 1/2 day, alternating beteween the days. You might shoot Morning-Afternoon-Morning, or Afternoon-Morning-Afternoon. I'm not sure you can be sure of your ending time, but you'll have a good idea if you look at the Squad Matrix. Example of the 2008 matrix is here: http://www.uspsa-nationals.org/08LimitedNa...sSquadSched.pdf

Just a little rental car info. I called Avis the other day to see if their cars were equipped with GPS since it's been a while since I've rented a car. They replied no but for 13.99 a day they could add one. :surprise:

I prompted got mine and input the pertinent addresses for the Nationals. It'll be going with me.

Why wouldn't you want a rental car? What's the fun in being in Vegas if you are trapped in your hotel room? For those who have been in the Nationals, I'm curious too on how long the shooting lasts.

I'm sure that not everyone will be at the Orleans, last time when I was in Vegas I was never in my hotel room anyways, it was just used for sleeping. Circus Circus wasn't too bad, but I was never in there so I probably don't have a full account of what the service is like. I'm going to be staying at the Riviera this time around since it's cheap.

Anywho, my brother and I will be playing in as many low buy-in Poker tournaments as we can, I can't wait! Kind of wish it was scheduled during the same time as the WSOP main event final table...that would have been awesome to watch live!

Anybody have any more info on Vegas hotels? I made a reservation at the match hotel when the announcement came out, but I have yet to get my plane tix. I would like to finalize everything in the next day or 2.

What kinda info are you looking for?

I spend a lot of time in Vegas each month for work. Stayed at many strip hotels. for the last 2 years I only stay at Ballys. They really do know how to treat you. The rate is $6 per night more than the match hotel.

Anything .... just wondering what everybody's choice of hotel is. There's about a hundred to choose from, as opposed to a typical Nationals where there's only 10 or 15 hotels to choose from. :)

We're staying at Circus-Circus cause it's cheap. As long as it has a decent bed and damn good AC, it'll do just fine.

Chris, it depends what you're looking for, and if you're bringing the wife. Circuis Circus is by far the cheapest. I'd check out the Sahara for a similar price, which I think is nicer. If your bring someone with you, it is nice to say on the strip, so they can walk between hotels and spend time sightseeing. If you're coming along and will be at the match all day, hotel location doesn't matter as much.

I like the middle/south end of the strip for strolling between hotels to sightsee. The north end of the strip (the Winn not withstanding) has older, more historic hotels.

At this point, I'm booked at the Orleans, mainly out of convenience. But....

My wife, whose bargain hunting WebFu is truly awesome, managed to find a better deal at the Orleans through Yahoo Travel than the group rate USPSA is being offered - bit more than $150 saved for the week we'll be staying (both matches). She also picked up some info by surfing BB comments by folks who recently stayed there, such as what seems to be a nonoptional $5/day facilities charge (use of the gym, etc.) which isn't included in the offered rate, and is present in the final bill whether or not you actually use them, and pretty pricey internet access ($12.99/day).

Even Jim Cramer says Vegas is hurting ("Sell them stocks, baby, Booyah!").

Hunt around - seems like a lot of good deals are still available, both at the Orleans and probably at other places. Watch for those sneaky charges, though.

I must be one of the ones who are not staying on the strip. I dont care for the casino resorts as they tend to nickel and dime you to death if you are not gambling. (too smokey as well..) After doing some research, I will be staying at the Staybridge suites (off the strip). great room for less than $100 a night.
