The Next Step?

I am still real new to this, however I'm hooked pretty hard. I bought a glock 35 and love it, I'm very happy with that choice thus far. However I have a habbit of wanting new toys. What is next in terms of a gun. I'm thinking top end limited gun and or a gun that could convert to open at some point.

I hear a lot about STI, SVI, Para, etc....

This isn't going to hapen soon, maybe next season, but I like to research. Any thoughts, guideance and or resources would be appreciated.

If you decide to go with something like an SVI/STI Limited gun, it's not really going to be something you can convert to Open and be cost effective. It would take a new slide, barrel, extractor, ejector, firing pin, pin stop, scope, scope mount, compensator etc. If you went with a slide mounted optic you could have a gun built with two top ends, but it's not really a great solution. The other thing is you'd need two sets of mags (one in 40 and the other in 9 or 38S/SC) and that's going to get expensive quickly. Just the parts to put together a decent mag are $100 or more and you're going to need four or five for each setup....$1K isn't unreasonable to cover that.

If you like Limited and want something really nice, the "cool" trend now is a 6" S_I that's been lightened so that it's as light or lighter than a 5" gun. Guys like Dan Bedell, Benny Hill and Howard Smith are turning out some really neat guns along these lines. If you later decide you want to go Open, you can sell a gun like that and get a large percentage of your money back and dump that cash into a good Open gun, whether it's an S_I or something like an EAA Gold Team Match (great value choice and great guns). You could turn that Glock 35 into a great Limited gun and a great Open gun. If I were to do it, (and I've spent a lot of time thinking about it) I'd do this:

Limited:

Sights you like

TruGrip

Vanek trigger

Dawson Ice magwell

Basepads you like (usually either Arredondo or Dawson)

Tungsten guide rod

Open:

SJC Convertible Comp w/ red dot

Use the same magwell, guide rod, and basepads installed on 9mm mags

Shooting Major 9mm in open, I'd be more comfortable with an aftermarket gunsmith fit barrel, though it may not actually be necessary.

Of course, I know how fun it is to have a bunch o' guns, so you may well end up getting a widebody 1911 anyway. If you keep your eyes peeled, you can often find good deals on used Para open guns, just make sure they actually run. I've seen damn nice examples here and on GB for as little as $800, including several mags and an installed dot sight. The club I originally started at has a member who is a Para specialist, so I've seen firsthand that with a little massaging they can be made to run just as reliably as ones built on the S_I platform.

As soon as I logged off last night it dawned on me that I was asking the question wrong as I know that a limited gun and an open gun are two diffirent things and it would be unreasonable to try to make one be the other...Duhhhhh.

I actually think I could really fancy up my glock to make it a good solid limited gun. I have put new sights on it and grip tape, thats about it. Soon to add the tungston guide rod and I am looking at sending it to Vannek for his fitted trigger job....

So I guess my question is do I want a top end limited gun or an open gun..... ???? I'm not sure I want to shoot open, at least not soon....I guess I just like guns and want another one :)

Do these guys have web sites? Do you buy the guns from them or buy else where and send them to them for tuning????

Thanks guys this is what I am looking for for info!

With most gunsmiths, you send them a frame, you get back a gun.

Benny Hill is a member of this forum. You can get Dan Bedell's gun's through Shooters Connection. Other good choices are Evolution Gun Works or Brazos Custom. Or, you can go the factory route, and buy a "factory custom" gun from Strayer-Voigt, STI, or Para Ordnance - these are already built guns that are, for the most part, ready to go.

I like the looks of the Brazo's guns, better start saving my nickels and dimes ;) My wife is going to leave me :):)

A smart guy might get the wife involved as well so that she would agree with the expenditures in the sport. But, understand up front how much more reloading you will have to do to support ammo for two shooters, and then there are match fees, holster rigs, another gun, etc. etc. etc.

Oh, and more ammo!

:D

Good luck!

No Doubt.... I've tried... she is not biteing, yet, but I have not given up! I'm just trying to get her to come watch a match, then I could have a fighting chance!
