My shoulder is killing me

I have a pretty bad shoulder that has started to drive me crazy again. I tore my rotator cuff, labrum, bicep and a good chunk of the connecting tissue (for you medical folks - I had a Bankart lesion, Hill Sach lesion, SLAP tear and damage to my bicep) and a good amount of arthritis thrown in for good measure.

After seeing several doctors I finally found a wonderful shoulder specialist at the University of VA who performs 200+ shoulder surgeries annually and is the head orthopedist for the ACC etc....

I had the first surgery in Sept. 2005 and had another in May 2007 to clean up fraying tissue in front of where the anchors were installed and some scar tissue. By July I was feeling pretty good, although I will probably never be able to shoot again, I was able to return to road bicycle riding and had been enjoying the first somewhat pain free time in the past several years. If I got sore, it was gone the next day. 2 weeks ago, I jammed my arm into the ground to brace against a fall in the ice, and have been sore since. I never had any swelling or bruising, still have a full range of motion, but have a constant dull pain that will not go away. I've been in contact with the Dr. who says to try Ibuprofen etc.. for a few more weeks to see if it will settle down before coming in for an appointment and exam. It is driving me crazy wondering if I am truly hurt or just sore. I thought about it possibly separating, but I am not a Dr. and it seems like all you do is rest if it isn't severe.

My other problem is that the Dr.'s office is 2 hours away. If the pain continues, I will have to go once for an exam, once for a MRI, again for results and will have to miss time away from my office, make several full day round trips and still be sore. It seems that with the shoulder, the options are surgery or rest...nothing else. This isn;t terrible, but damn i hate to waste time.

Sorry to whine - just felt like venting....I am ready to rip my arm out, it is driving me crazy.......

I feel your pain..... in exactly the same place. About 20 years back, I was riding my motrocycle when a car swerved into my lane and I had to lay it down. I got launched over the bike and landed mostly on my right shoulder. For a while, I could not raise my right arm at all... after a while it sort of "healed" , but over time is totally messed up. Constant pain, makes grinding noises like there is a bag of gravel in there.

The bummer is I can only sleep on my left side, and after laying on that shoulder it hurts too. Sometimes it is hard to even remember what getting a whole night's sleep was actually like.

Yep. Once you get to a certain age, you start to develop arthritis or bursitis in all the joints that were beat up at some point in your life. Sounds like you have it.

ummm the blades on a hacksaw are too fine

think treesaw...

on a more useful note...

I have found that asperin and a serving of jello

seem to make my joint pains calm down.

usually takes about a week of that once a day.

and it is better if I do it a few hours away from a meal.

I have to say I have not got all the damage you have sustained.

I can imagine it hurts....

In 1997 had a bad fall at area 4 & blew out my entire rotator cuff & bicept muscle tore lose. After complete rotator cuff surgury, 6" scar & steel anchors to hook my bicept mussel to, it took 2 years to heal & then went to the gym & still work it out today at thr gym. It's about 85% of my right but I make do.

Ice every day!

I had knee surgery last summer and my recovery went fantastic. One of the things I learned (or knew but didnt realize the extent of) is how important minor general daily care can be. Ice your shoulder every day, whether you need it or not. Ice it every time it gets sore, every time you get out of the shower, everytime you possible can. This is irritating and annoying, but I am now well convinced of both the short and long term effects of something I once thought too trivial to bother with.

Sorry to hear bout your spot though. Wishing you as great a recovery as possible.
