Eager
I'd like to install an EGW oversized firing pin stop on my new STI Trojan, along with an Aftec extractor. The Trojan has STI (Bomar like) rear sights that require the top of the firing pin stop to be cut off as shown in the photo below. Can I (with my moderate hand tool skills) reasonably expect to remove the correct amount of metal from the top of the FP stop with a hand file, all the while maintining acceptable tolerances? Does it matter if it's uneven or ugly? The EGW oversized FP stop does not come pre-shaved like the STI model does. Who has done this, and how? Here's a pic of the EGW oversized FP stop: Edited May 28, 2007 by Eager
Matt Cheely
I go at it with a bench mounted belt sander to get it most of the way down. You can't really muck it up.
HSMITH
Same as Matt when I am too lazy to put it in the mill and cut it, which is 9 out of 10 times.......
hitman
+3 bench mounted belt sander here. You could use the dreaded Dremel and a cut off wheel but watch your fingers, toes and everything in between.
Flexmoney
I think I hogged on one with a coarse file to get it most of the way there once. You'd have to be extra special to screw it up.
Matt Cheely
By the way, Most of the dimensions are going to have to be tweaked to get that FP stop to fit in the slide. It's not a simple grind down the top, and drop it in installation.
Joe4d
Not to be devil's advocate but why ? What's wrong with your current STI one ? The Aetec needs part of the stop rounded. Plus one on the file. Havent done a 1911 but a Hipower, I left it installed when cutting the flat on the rear of the slide for a Novak.

The STI has a large bevel.
HSMITH
I have seen some pretty darn bad extractor clocking with stock stops in STI slides too, enough clocking to keep the gun from running well. Much more critical in an Open gun but still an issue in EVERY gun.
safarihunter
I have done a few with a file and if you take your time it's not a problem. Check fit frequently and you'll get it right.
