Looking for Everglades 124gr FMJ to 1150fps loads

My goal is to create a 124gr load that will closely replicate federal 124gr HST +p POI out to about 40yrds.  Based on a calculator I found a 124gr projectile at 1150fps will get me there.  My question is: using Everglades 124gr FMJ round nose what powders should I be looking at to reach that velocity without being into +p pressures.

So far vihtavuori powders are out as I can't get them locally.  I was looking at WSF, winchester autocomp, ramshot silhouette, and CFE pistol.

6.0 of Silhouette nets me 1230 from a 4.5 bbl and that’s what they consider a +p load. I can get better accuracy and as good as vel with AA#5. Haven’t tested CFE in the 9 yet. WSF works good with lead bullets.

I worked up a +P load using WSF for 124gr Speer gold dots with good results. Velocity average was 1175 FPS using a full size CZ. Accuracy was excellent. I chose WSF because I was under the impression this load was close to 100% burn rate and would have less muzzle flash.

I'm sorry I don't have the powder weight charge I used but I would work up with a chrono in your case. Check out Gordon's free reloading tool if you haven't before. It's pretty great at projecting potential loadings, including projected velocities, pressure and burn rates. Here's a quick video about it.

Farmer, at 6.0grs of silhouette your just breaking into +p pressures if your using a 124gr projectile based on book.  But man you've got 100fps more than book velocity!  Is this normal with silhouette or do you think it's just your barrel?

Haywizzle, how was the WSF for muzzle flash?  Also thanks for the link to that tool, I'll be be trying that out!

I did some more reading last night and stumbled across winchester 572 which looks promising as well.  Folks on here either loved it or hated.  But the data shows that even at max book load pressures are nicely below the 35k psi mark.

I have noticed that about the loads in my manual too. Most show a lower velocity than what I’m getting even from different guns but I’m not getting psi signs. I also noticed that one jug of #5 I have is .2 grains faster than the others and it weighs different. In other words the new jug needs .2 grains more to equal the same velocity as the old one. So depending on which lot a person gets could make the difference. I haven’t pushed 572 yet in the 9, just tried a few in the 327FM and it was pretty accurate and clean in it. Just a little above starting load so far, that round peak’s pretty quick so haven’t pushed it yet.

I actually just did something very similar, but not too +p, And I didn’t check poi shifts.

anyways, I used HS-6 powder which I had on hand from loading 9 major. Another popular powder that should work for this accurate AA#7 but I decided on HS-6 because I think it is cleaner.

i used some 124 gold dots, and some RMR 124 Jhp (these were their original design, And not the current “nuke” design).

6.3gr HS-6 got me 1147fps average out of a Glock 45.  However, I had to seat these very deep. I think I was at 1.050” to plunk in my gun.

6.5gr got me to 1170fps average. Here I was starting to see some flattened primers so I did not go any higher since I was only aiming for 1150fps anyways.

if you can load them a little longer for your gun hs-6 could get you to where you need to be. I have gotten over 1400fps in my 9major loads with PD 124s with 8.2gr but obviously not shot out of a Glock!

below is a screenshot of my data including the gold dot loads as well. I can double check my oal in my log when I get home from work if you would like.

data below is in the following format:

gun, bullet weight, bullet manufacturer, powder type, powder charge, blank (oal), 10 shot velocities, then finally avg velocity in red

I use Accurate #5 or True Blue to make a +P 124gr load to match my Gold Dots. Both burn clean but I like the True Blue a little better. Both meter really well through my Dillon.

Thank you to everyone for the help and the results of your data!  I've decided I'm gonna try silhouette, true blue and win 572.  I got lucky on the win 572.  It was on sale at cabelas so I cleaned them out.  If it doesn't work for me I can always trade it off.  The other two I'll snag next week when I visit my LGS up north.

Now I'm just down to which projectiles to run.  The cheapest option I've found in 124gr is the everglades plated RN at $0.085 per projectile.  The RMR FMJ RN is $0.089 per.  I know the rmr's are accurate but if I'm not pushing the everglades past 1250fps I'm not seeing an advantage to the FMJ.  In fact I kinda like the idea that the plated bullet doesn't have any exposed lead at the base.  So has anyone had problems with the plated everglades projectiles?

No worries mate, happy to help. Those plated bullets should be fine. Just be sure not to shave them with poor case expansion or over crimp them. Work up the charge as they move more like lead then FMJs. Try them out before buying a ton and see how they group. Good luck on the load development!
