Genghis
I've been looking for.38 Super factory loads for my new blaster, to get me by until I get set up to reload. I went to the manufacturer's website and tried to find bullet weight and velocity, to calculate USPSA Power Factors. I found only two Corbon loads and one Georgia Ammunition load that make Major. Any additional information would be appreciated. Info is listed as follows: Manufacturer Designation and/or description Website Bullet weight and velocity USPSA Power Factor Aguila http://www.aguilaammo.com/centerfire.pdf 130 grains at 1220 fps 158.60 PF American Ammunition A38SUP111 http://www.a-merc.com/cgi-local/webcat/pro...m=12&reset=1359 115 grains at 1185 fps 136.28 PF Armscor Sells 38 Super but no ballistics info at http://www.armscor.net/Ammunition.htm CCI/Speer no 38 Super ammo listed on website http://www.cci-ammunition.com/default.asp?menu=1&s1=4&s2=9 Corbon SD38X115/20-38SUPER +P, JHP (Self Defense) http://www.corbon.com/users/corbon/catalog...29db&Vl=39&Tp=2 115 grains at 1450 fps 166.75 PF Corbon PM38X140PM-38 Super Performance Match FMJ http://www.corbon.com/users/corbon/catalog...f9f09&Vl=5&Tp=2 140 grains at 950 fps 133.00 PF Corbon SD38X125/20-38SUPER +P JHP (Self Defense) http://www.corbon.com/users/corbon/catalog...29db&Vl=39&Tp=2 125 grains at 1350 fps 168.75 PF Federal American Eagle Handgun, AE38S1 http://www.federalcartridge.com/ammo40/bal...0&bulletwgt=130 130 grains at 1200 fps 156.00 PF Georgia Arms 38 Super Gold Dot, G38SA Hollow Point http://www.georgia-arms.com/shear.htm 147 grains at 1200 fps 176.40 PF Glaser Blue Safety Slug http://www.corbon.com/users/corbon/catalog...59c91&Vl=7&Tp=2 80 grains at 1700 fps 136.00 PF Glaser Blue Safety Slug not listed on mfgr website, but found on Cheaperthandirt.com 80 grains at 1600 fps 128.00 PF Hornady no 38 Super ammo listed on website http://www.hornady.com/shop/?page=shop/bro...6d61cf49e3223a4 Magsafe no 38 Super ammo listed on website http://yp.bellsouth.com/sites/magsafeammo/page3.html Magtech FMJ no 38 Super ammo listed on website but Sportsman's Guide has it http://www.magtechammunition.com/html/pistalbal.html http://www.sportsmansguide.com/cb/cb.asp?a=148168 130 grains at 1215 fps 157.95 PF Master Cartridge no 38 Super ammo listed on website http://ableammo.com/catalog/default.php?manufacturers_id=96 Norma no 38 Super ammo listed on website http://www.norma.cc/sida/eng/index.html PMC 38SA, +P FMJ http://www.pmcammo.com/ballistics/handgun_...superauto+p.php 130 grains at 1090 fps 141.70 PF PMC 38SB, JHP 115 grains at 1120 fps 128.80 PF Remington no 38 Super ammo listed on website http://www.remington.com/products/ammuniti...n/remington.asp Remington UMC +P http://www.remington.com/products/ammuniti...umc_handgun.asp Velocity from http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/...leitemid=619038 130 grains at 1215 fps 157.95 PF Sellier & Bellot no 38 Super ammo listed on website http://www.sellier-bellot.cz/pistol-and-re...on.php?view=all Winchester X38ASHP; +P; Silvertip® Hollow Point http://www.winchester.com/products/catalog...XV0b21hdGljICst 125 grains at 1240 fps 155.00 PF Winchester Q4205;+P Full Metal Jacket http://www.winchester.com/products/catalog...XV0b21hdGljICst 130 grains at 1215 fps 157.95 PF Wolf no 38 Super ammo listed on website http://www.wolfammo.com/1_pistol.htm
ktyler
This may come as a surprise, but open shooters rarely, if ever meet SAAMI spec with there ammo. Most of us are way above "max load". When I read your post I was surprised anyone besides Corbon made major. You migh try finding a local commercial reloader to load some ammo to your spec. Just make sure they follow you receipt. If you have a local shooter with the reloading gear you need, ask a shooting buddy to lend you a hand and get you started. There is a guy in Oregon that will load super to major and sell the ammo, I just can't remember his name....maybe one of your local shooters will remember and post the info for you. Shoot well, Ktyler
Genghis
I knew most reloaders were loading a lot hotter than SAAMI. I found out how much hotter when I found a box of factory stuff, I think PMC, and calculated the power factor at around 130. I know virtually all Open shooters make Major, so that means they have to be loading about 25% hotter than this load. Looking at the barrel made me feel a lot better about this. The outer diameter is similar to a .45 barrel, and with a smaller inner diameter, the barrel looks like it can handle a lot of pressure.
dfwmiket
Get in touch with Max G, Harmon, or Harold......they'll load ya up some to get you thru till you can get your own station up and running. They prob won't charge you too much, either. Mike
George
I too am surprised that anything but the Corbon +P+ round actually made major. My experiences with factory .38 stupor fodder way back when I first got into a sooper were that it was 150ish pf stuff at the hottest and that was that. IIRC the original factory loading for the .38 Super when it was introduced back in the 1930's was a 130 FMJ at around 1300fps for a 169 PF. What happened here? When did the Stupor replace the Super? rubberneck
Atlanta Arms and ammo makes a 38 Super round that makes major. I was told that they make Max's ammo for him.
shred
Atlanta Arms and ammo makes a 38 Super round that makes major. I was told that they make Max's ammo for him. They custom-load Max and Travis' ammo to the Army's specs. It's not an off-the-shelf retail item, though it is possible get in on that production run if you talk to them at the right time and order enough. The only difference between what Max shoots an what you can buy dircetly from AAA is the actual bullet (IIRC the off the shelf is round nosed and Max's is flat nosed) and that came straight from Danny Weisner's mouth. The difference for the reason is that your average shooter doesn't want to pay that extra couple of dollars for the difference in the bullet for very little return on the end result. Having said all that it still doesn't change the fact that AAA sells a 38Super round that makes major.
TMC
I shot some Armscor 38 Super IPSC 130's and they made a 163pf out of my gun with a schueman 4 port hybrid with 2 addtional holes in the sides of the barrel. I'm sure they would make major out of an unported 5" gun.
standles
Atlanta Arms and ammo makes a 38 Super round that makes major. I was told that they make Max's ammo for him. I just got 4K rounds of AAA 38 super comp. It shotos great and I like it. However, in my Bedell hybrid comp it DOES NOT MAKE MAJOR. Three popple holes and a Bedel comp. It was close at a PF of 162 but not enough for major. I am going to use it for practice and either get him to load my next ones hotter or just load my own. iainmcphersn
Anyone have a new URL for Atlanta Arms and Ammo? The one linked from Dave's sight www.matchgrade.net appears to be down... Thanks, John
Harmon
contact ivan at armscor, tell them that kenneth hicks sent ya. as far as pressure and making major, you can make major with some powders within SAAMI spec with the super. accurate arms number seven is probably one of them VV N105 and 3n38 will also do it. http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/...leitemid=614778 this made major easy 10 shots avged 1464 fps for 181 power factor..but this is 50Kpsi ammo. It works in my super...despite the different case dimensions. but in your quest to find major factory ammo, you would be better served by buying a set of dies and some brass and start loading your own. if your worried about pressure, Accurate arms number seven is a nice safe powder(though not the cleanest) 10.5 grains and a 124grain Montana Gold JHP at 1.250" OAL, federal primer and remington 38 super brass makes a nice load.. If you would like more 38 super loads that make major with easy to get(non VihtaVhouri) powders, send me an Email.
Genghis
My dies should get here today or tomorrow. BTW, the cheapest load I've found online is here: http://www.sportsmansguide.com/cb/cb.asp?a=148322 $7.47/50! Only 136 PF, but good for practice til I'm operational. Harmon
amerc ammo SUCKS! for cheap factory ammo, aguilla is much better(and hotter 130 @1260fps) http://www.coledistributing.com/ 6.96 a box or 139 a thousand. last i checked, the armscor ammo ivan was selling was about the same price, but it makes major. harmon
