Training Vision

I know that to reach the next level of performance, I need to be able to continue to train my body for speed but also need to train to see faster. Does anyone have any tips or techniques for training to see more/faster? Not sure if it matters much (dot vs. irons) but I'm shooting irons in limited.

The only way to speed up your vision is to shoot beyond your vision in practice and over time your vision will naturally catch up. You have to be ok with having misses and feeling uncomfortable. Most people can get away with seeing a lot less than they think they need to see.

I’ve experienced that before but it always feels like more of a phenomenon and less like a skill I’m building because it’s does not happen consistently. I’d really like to find a drill in live or dry fire where I can train this to get quicker sight pictures, transitions, etc.

Shoot ANY drill faster than your comfortable pace repeatedly until you're confident you are hitting what you are seeing.

I practice shooting faster than I accurately can and expect some misses. It definitely helps and will get your eyes to track faster if you practice it consistently..

Mike Seeklander has a chapter on vision, including exercises to improve vision, in his Your Competition Handgun Training Program book.

It's the only one I've found. Some others talk about vision but Mike dedicates pages to it.

I didn’t even know he wrote a book. Going to have to order it. I just started re-reading BE’s book and the first chapter on awareness and focus makes more sense now than when I read it a couple of years ago

I tried this tonight with 13-02. Down the middle. After a few controlled runs I really started to push it and was able to consistently shoot it under 3 seconds with one at 2.62. Although I didn’t have a single clean run under 3.0, I realized that I started shooting more intuitively with a target focus. I think spending more time practicing just out of control is the key! Steve Anderson’s “speed mode”...I realized tonight that there’s much to be learned here.
