Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

 

After a long hiatus I'm gonna try to shoot USPSA again.  I used to shoot with the SCAPSA club near St. Cloud, Mn. (circa 80's and early 90's)  I had sold off most of my Action shooting gear

and now trying to get new gear.  I used to shoot a compensated .45 made by Jim Stroh of Alpha Precision.  I did manage to scare up a comped 1911 made by Dwight

Behn of SCAPSA. Dwight also developed the VMax 152 bullet for the .45. (If any of these names ring a bell feel free to chime in)  I will probably post a couple of pix of 

the 1911 as I am drawing a blank on the type of comp and recoil spring assembly.  I will probably start a STI 9mm major build real soon.

Not sure if you might be shooting in OPEN with the comp.

 

Okay to get started that way, but you'll want to lose the comp

eventually so you can compete in SS.

Cool gun for sure.  You may want to read the latest rule book.  As there have been a books worth of changes since you last competed.  Having fun is still the overall key though.

I shot my first 2 IPSC matches with a Comp'd 45 vs the Hi-Cap mag way back when.

 

You will be reloading 3 times on a Stage compared to them NOT Reloading.

I will shoot open with it.  I bought a Safariland rig (014) for it.......First night a guy with his Atlas Gunworks limited threw in his 27 rounder......I did have to reload three times and I ran the stage quicker.....Good Gawd ya'll I'm 59 hehe.  I will be building an STI open gun this summer but because of the nostalgia I need to keep the 'ol blunder buss intact.  I have other guns to run Production and Limited.  I'm really interested in who's comp this is and the recoil system.....If any old timers might know....    ;-)

I remember how tight those actions were when Dwight finished a new one. Is Dwight still working up in Alexandria? He sold his bullet casting machine to Rick Kaeter when he moved up there and I bought a bunch of those bullets from Rick way back then. I lost track of Rick. I havent seen either one of those guys for maybe 25 years.

A friend is just getting going with a new Dillon and I thought I would jump online and see where I can direct him to find some of those VMAX bullets that I used to shoot non-competitively in my old govt. model.

It is very curious that I found your recent post the first time I searched for some of Dwight's bullets. At a hundred yards it was great fun to plink with those because I wouldn't have to aim six feet low to hit anything!

I think had to change the recoil spring, but I can't remember. Maybe someone can refresh my memory. I didnt have a chronograph, but i loaded them kind of hot and it cycled differently, of course.

I have probably 300 of Dwight's 152's left.....they're a work of art.  Dwight took a H&G 200 grain and put it on a lathe and shaped the nose and cut of the beveled base and sent it off to a mould maker.  I bought  500 of Missouri Bullets coated 155's......we shall see.  Penn bullets also has a cast version that I will try.  I love this bullet.  I can remember when he first made them they were the only bullet I've ever heard that would hissssssss down range.  Velocity and conical shape of the nose.  I remember when we were trying to work up loads with it and several guys got over 1500 fps over the chronograph!  Wow!  My Dillon was still set up for 7.9 grains of WW231 for these.....zooooooom!  I think I will try to get a hold of Dwight in a month or so just to say Hi!  This particular gun he built for himself and sold to another guy has zero wiggle in the slide to frame fit and zero downward movement of the barrel.  He was insatiable in his work like a mad scientist.  And a humble and helpful man.  I got the gun back from a friend who thought I would enjoy having it from those days.  There are very few rounds on it and still seems like I'm breaking it in.  He set up a trigger on my original comp. gun with  13oz trigger with no hammer follow and crisp as hell!  It's too bad the .45 is not as competitive as it was but I'm gonna have some fun.  Who are you and where are you from maybe I've hung out with you or shot with you?

 I am a nobody in the competitive shooting sports world. I think I met Dwight at Del Tone and ended up buying five hundred bullets from him when he still lived in st cloud before he sold his machine to Rick. I tagged along to a couple matches, but only watched admiringly from the sidelines.

I lived in Phoenix years ago and had Nelson Ford do some awesome triggers on some of my revolvers. It was much easier in the late eighties to find places to shoot targets and plink. From where i lived in North Phoenix I could drive out to a good shooting spot in fifteen minutes! I used to work at a machine shop that did parts for Dillon so I was able to get set up for dirt cheap, though I dont have any of it anymore.

 Thirteen ounces, wow! I think Nelson did my .44 magnums at 2 3/4 lbs and I thought that was good.

I live in Champlin, mn now and will message you my info in case you are in this area. Maybe I could go watch you break in that gun at your range.

I used to have a book by Laslo Antal precision pistol target shooting. Slow one handed shooting is more my style unless i had a lot of .223 or .308 ammo to shoot. A friend is getting into reloading big time so I will be practicing with him occasionally.

Yep had some of those 152's for a 45 comp, that was mid 80's!!!

Nice old school state of the art competition gun, just dated after 1990.
