Recommended Posts

Recently acquired a new chrony and decided to try a variety of powders under Bayou Bullets 147gr and Zero 147gr JHP.

147gr TC Bayou Bullet OAL: 1.150

Clay Dot: 3.0gr Avg: 920fps PF: 135
Clay Dot: 3.2gr Avg: 950fps PF: 139

Competition: 3.0gr Avg: 925fps PF: 135
Competition: 3.2gr Avg: 962fps PF: 141

147gr JHP Zero Bullet OAL 1.150

Clay Dot: 3.2gr Avg: 890fps PF: 130
Clay Dot: 3.4gr Avg: 914fps PF: 134

Competition: 3.2gr Avg: 892fps PF: 131
Competition: 3.4gr Avg: 930fps PF: 136

With the charges all being very similar, there was little to no difference in recoil that I could perceive. All samples were very soft recoiling and very similar in accuracy in my hands.

Pistol: Gans Gun 2011 w/Schumann barrel.

Accuracy was roughly 2" at 25yds rested with no clear winner among the samples.

When I ran 30 random sample rounds through my Sig MPX, they left a ragged hole about an 1"-1.5" large. I credit the red dot and stable platform for the increase in accuracy. In more capable hands, I'm sure the 2011 could produce better groupings than I could muster.

Those are good ES/SD numbers for the clay dot. Could you post the comp numbers too?

I recently tested both of these powders myself, and got really high ES/SD. Much higher than I get with N310/320 anyway.

Could you also share details on your setup. Press, powder measure, mixed brass or same head stamp, etc.

Thanks!

Thanks. Those are pretty good. Especially with the Bayou bullets.

Maybe I need to give it another shot.

I edited my previous post to also include the Comp' numbers requested.

As far as my setup I just use a Dillon 550b and mixed head stamp. I have an digital RCBS scale to check the charges.

What was your ES and SD on the Clay Dot?

I tried it with some 147gr Xtreme's and it was all over the place.

probably has more to do with your powder measure than with the boolits.

I would agree with you normally on this, but when I run a test on a "new to me" powder for chrono, I hand weigh every charge.

I think it might have been a bullet sizing issue though. Around that time I didn't realize that some of my bullets were slightly undersized.

Have you tried shooting them through a pistol-caliber-carbine??

I see what you did there.
