leadhammer
Hey guys, I had purchased a guide rod for my stock Shadow, tried it and it works fine. I put the plastic one back in though. If I remember correctly some people used a buffer or something in them. Is that needed? I know some CZ's (like the post below) come with them, but so many types of CZ's it's hard to cipher. What factory or custom guns have the s.s. guide rod with no buffer vs buffer. Thanks
JGus
My Accu Shadows did NOT have a buffer on the stainless steel guide rods. And I've never added one. Haven't had any issues. The stainless steel guide rod does get beaten up a little bit, but as I've said, no issues so far.
BeerBaron
The only shadows that I know of that come with SS rod AND the buffer are the special models made by CZ UB like the orange, canada shadow mate, australia shadow mate etc. I use the buffer that came with my shadow mate in practice but I take it out for matches as they can cause problems either by short stroking or if they tear up and jam up the gun. plenty of people run the SS rods without a buffer and you definitely don't need one for the stock plastic guide. The stainless steel guide rod does get beaten up a little bit, but as I've said, no issues so far. Same with my Accushadow. Running an 11# recoil spring the rod does get beat up a little. From my understanding, this is due to the guide rod unseating for a split second when the slide goes into battery because of the light spring. The guide rod must be softer than the frame to be able to take the abuse, otherwise the frame would be battered.
sclagg
Yep... I've had 3 shadows and all came with ss rod and all of them get nicked up. No issues though... Never had a chance to try a buffer. Edited February 13, 2015 by sclagg
JGus
There is a base model Shadow that comes with plastic guide rod, no ext firing pin, the stock hammer, rubber grips. Priced around $900. http://czcustom.com/CZ-75-SP01-SHADOW-PolyCoat-9mm.aspx While most Shadow users are using the stainless guide rod, many are also using the plastic guide rod. Here is a link to an older thread where CZ USA rep and GM Production shooter Matt Hopkins says he moved to the plastic guide rod in his Shadow because the stainless rod gets beaten up. leadhammer
So the guide rod gets beat up when the slide goes back? How about when running a stock heavy recoil spring and full power loads. I guess if the spring matches the ammo it should be the same. How many rounds do you guys have on those s.s. guide rods with no buffer?
accu9
No, the stainless guide rod gets beat up when the slide returns to battery with a lighter recoil spring.
accu9
"Beat up" probably isn't the right phrase. 'Shows slight wear consisting of small nicks that in no way adversely affects performance'- more aptly describes what is taking place.
