JFlowers
The open gun I bought and am enjoying has a 5 1/2" guide rod which extends slightly from the front of the slide underneath the comp. Does that extra 1/2" of guide rod gain anything? I was thinking about replacing the solid rod with a 5" Sprinco, but was wondering if the missing 1/2" would cause a problem. Thanks for your thoughts on this! James
ErikW
My gunsmith said it made the gun cycle smoother, IIRC. I used a 5" tungsten rod with no ill effects.
BEDELLCUSTOM
the extra length of guide rod sticking out past the reverse plug isn't doing anything. you should be able to replace it with another 5" guide rod of a different type, sprinco or recoil master. Nate
Do you like the tungsten rod in an open gun? I am just getting started with an open gun and was wondering what people liked. Nate
ErikW
I liked it in that gun, the Supertanker. Cut flip a little bit. I am determined not to dick around with my new gun and stick with the 5" steel rod that's in it. At least until Athena whoops my ass again and I blame it on the gun... .40AET
I am determined not to dick around with my new gun Damn good words to live by. My plan as well. I don't even have the gun yet and I feel the plan falling apart.
tightloop
Get it set up so it runs 100% of the time and then leave it alone...
TeamGE
JFlowers, Does the comp rest on the guide rod when the slide is fully pulled back? If so, the gunsmith could want it that way to support the comp and barrel during cycling of the gun, to make it run better. Very common practice in the days of cone bushing comps. If the comp doesn't touch, then you should be able to shorten the guide rod with no ill effects.
