wblacksh
I am in the process of learning what I need and how to get into reloading. I have a question that may be obvious to some, but I do t know the answer to. Why do online retailers have hazmat fees on powder and primers, but a box, even cases at a time of rounds don't have a hazmat fee? Thanks.
Hi-Power Jack
The retailers don't make the rules - they follow them. I guess the Feds feel there is more hazard (more likelihood that) primers and powder will "explode" than will loaded ammo. (Makes sense, to me, anyway.). Not real easy to make loaded ammo explode. (Not as hazardous). The way to lessen the impact of hazmat fees are to buy LARGE quantities at a time (alone or with other people).
RDA
Loaded rounds are pretty harmless and not easily ignited (unless shot from a barrel). 1,000s of primers and/or pounds of powder are pretty explosive and easily ignited.
Brassaholic13
Whats goofy though, is that primed brass requires Hazmat...

glenr
The dealer may not understand the rules dealing with hazmat fees any more than the customers. Years ago when I was doing FX's for clowns and magicians and shows. A lot of people didn't get the reasoning behind them. I lost some customers because I wouldn't just throw it in a box and ship it. If the seller sticks the hazmat paperwork work to the box they will be charged for the fees by the shipping company. Since they don't know what is in the box! I'll have to inform the local UPS distribution center who wouldn't let me ship some primed brass due to hazmat.
