Hi i was wondering when building an open gun, and wanting to shoot 9minor or major can you use the same gun and will the barrel be fine or is the barrel specific to minor or major. i hear you have to pay money to play open. montana gold bullets. im a cheap guy, hahaha.. can i shoot standard 9mm ammo from the store or do i need to reload or buy major loads only. Maybe to practice just shoot target white winchester boxes or whatever i can get my hands on.

Also can you shoot other type of bullets in an open with a comp like bbi, bear creek, xtreme bullets.

1. is the barrel specific to minor or major.

2. can i shoot standard 9mm ammo from the store

3. can you shoot other type of bullets with a comp like xtreme bullets.

1. the barrel/chamber is all set to shoot 9mm (minor or major)

9mm Major is just 9mm minor with more velocity (different powder,

more of it)

2. you can shoot minor in a major gun (My TruBor shoots both

just fine if the gun is clean and lubricated well). It's better

to change the springs (lighter springs for minor and heavier

springs for major). I use 10 lb spring for 9mm major.

3. Many people use the other bullets with a comp - if bullets

are fully plated and intended for 1400 fps, they're fine. Some

even shoot lead bullets - just lube the comp well, and clean

it religiously to get the lead buildup out of the comp. But,

that's too much work for me - so I stick with MG JHP's.

BTW, I reload 9mm major (124 gr MG JHP and 7 grains of

Winchester Auto Comp powder) for LESS than you can buy

a box of factory 9mm minor ammo.

thank you sir, great info. and i know reloading is the key to getting into open but its just the initial start for a press is expensive especially with my taste. i want a the blue press.. hahaha..and then powder is hard to come by.

When I first got my TruBor 9mm Major, open gun,

I didn't want to reload either, especially 9mm major.

And, I had all the equipment....

Just felt very concerned re: reloading 9mm to 1400 fps.

With the help of other shooters and a Lot of BE, I

slowly worked my way up to reloading 9mm major

with my trusty Chrony.

Once you buy the equipment ($300 for used SDB,

and $150 more for calipers, scale & chrono) and

you're all set to go.

As I mentioned before, it's cheaper to reload 9mm major

than to buy the cheapest 9mm at Walmart.

What are you shooting now? Sounds like a 9mm?

My CZ Czechmate goes Open Major to Minor w/o any hiccups, same springs in fact. If I'm low on 9 Major loaded ammo, I'll shoot my production 9mm (Minor) load for practice. Not enough gas to work the comp, but my production load is soft (BBI 147, VV N320 3.3gr, 132 PF) and with the weight of the compensator up front, the gun still shoots flat. But I do need to stay above 130pf for the springs to work, otherwise I do need a lighter recoil spring.

regarding other bullets, there are those here doing both xtreme plated and BBI coated major PF, but don't do a lead bullet it will be a mess. (learned the hard way running lead 9mm ammo in a Glock 17c, what a lead mess pouring out the ports into the slide :-)
