3djedi
Has anybody else experienced little particles of debris after shooting with CFE? They are little granules about the size of cfe but they are kind of tan/brown in color. I see them in and around the barrel. Inside the gun and on my shooting bench. At first I thought it might be corncob cleaning material that maybe got left in the case but I don't think that's it....... I'm shooting a glock 35 using 5.6g of cfe with 180g MG JHP'S loaded at 1.145" OAL. any ideas?
CB45
My guess, partially burnt powder.
3djedi
How does that happen?
njl
I've seen it happen with Universal Clays and WST if burned at too low a pressure. i.e. too light a load.
3djedi
Hmmm.....data calls for 5.4-6.0g at 1.125" in a 4" barrel. I'm loading a little longer at 1.145" but it's a 5" barrel.......I guess this calls for some experimentation!
3djedi
Here is what it looks like. This is after firing around 35 rounds. The barrel was cleaned prior to this....
CB45
Chrono the load, I bet it's on the slow side. CFE looks to be a slow/lower pressure powder. It loaded some for 9major and didn't notice any unburnt powder. You'll probably need to bump up the powder charge.
Slotbike
Agreed....heat up the load a bit. CFE Pistol is not as fast as titegroup, bullseye etc. unburnt powder is usually a sign that you are not getting a complete ignition. More powder = better burn. SilverBolt
I did. Was test CFE for the first time this weekend. Had 3.7gr behind 147gr MG CMJ's. After shooting two 10 round strings I had that brown residue on the bench.
Breacher217
Chrono it and report back. I'm curios as I have just scored a keg if CFE pistol.
danman00
I've seen this with Alliant Blue Dot as well. I was a little light on the charge by about 3-4 tenths.
Rckymtnshooter
I picked up some cfe pistol to try. Loaded 5.6 grains with a Montana Gold 180 jhp loaded to 1.185. The accuracy was actually really good. I shot about 200 rounds and started having failure to extract issues. Extractor was in good order. I was surprised how dirty the gun was though. Cleaned the gun up and shot some more the gun ran good for a while and then wen. Back to the extraction issues. The gun was once again very dirty. I went back to wst and have not had an extraction issue since. In my gun at least it appears that the particles and grime were causing this problem. 3djedi
I bumped my MG JHP'S to 5.8 @ 1.135 and it ran much cleaner. Still no chrono though....
pointblanktx
Anyone else run into this lately? Is it just because you are a little low on the powder charge?
PKT1106
I had some tan particles left over testing below minimum charge. I think that it's the copper cleaner not being burnt all the way. Still ran my Edge fine. Check the 10/40 reloading area, numbers are in there.
ruleyoutoo1911
I noticed the same thing when I used CFE Pistol to load some light .38 Special loads. I usually use a faster powder but CFE was all I had at the time.
Bkreutz
I load mid minor to major in 9mm, never seen anything like that.
ruleyoutoo1911
I didn't notice any unburned powder at all in 9mm with 125 gr. bullets, CFE Pistol seems to do pretty well in 9mm.
Hi-Power Jack
I bumped to 5.8 and it ran much cleaner. Still no chrono though.... I hope those are MINOR loads. I wouldn't shoot .40 Major without a chrono ....
