Why is there a shortage of Barrels right now?

My gunsmith was complaining its hard to find barrels right now, and im building a rifle for a LEO friend and sure as **** I'm having trouble finding a good quality barrel. seems like everyone is out of stock.

whats the backstory? anyone in the industry know what the deal is?

Ummm, demand far outstripped supply after the Nov 2012 elections and Sandy Hook political aftermath? I'm not sure there is much more than that.

Try some Criterion or JP barrels.

Midway has jp barrel+ bolt in stockman kinda pricey though.

I've been on the fence for awhile trying to decide on a barrel. Pulled the trigger this weekend and ordered a jp 18" light-weight directly from jp. Pricey but after all the great reviews here about jp barrels I figured I couldn't go wrong.

You sure we are talking about the same website? The website I listed is an aggregate of ar parts from dealers around the Internet. The website itself sells nothing. If a dealer is overpriced, that's the fault of the dealer and not the information aggregate. Just trying to pass on helpful info. I think your post was a little misguided.

Lowers and uppers are relatively easy to make and scaling up production is not terribly difficult. Small parts are a bit harder. But barrels require unique equipment that isn't easy to just go out and buy. It's also not a good idea to do so for a temporary upswing in the market.
