Big Stick Question

Does anyone know if a mag manufacturer has attempted to design a big stick that widens at the bottom like the Surefire 60-rd AR mags? Granted, there isn't a lot of room below the magwell, but if such a mag could be designed to work, there might be room for a little more capacity.

I've considered doing this. As far as I can tell; however, it's prohibited for open handguns in IPSC. I figured if I make one, it will become prohibited in USPSA too.

So exactly how many extra rounds do you think you could get and feed properly in the 50mm below the mag well? Have you looked at all the internals Surefire added and how many complaints are still showing up on forums?

Not a clue how many rounds might be added, but with people pushing their mags for every last round, I just figured it wouldn't hurt to ask. I'm actually in the minority and only load 18-19 in my limited mags and 26-27 in my open mags. I also haven't seen a Surefire firsthand and didn't know they were having so many problems. No intent to rile anyone up :)

My idea would actually add a very substantial amount of rounds and be more reliable than Surefire's setup. Their design mechanism has some obvious inherant flaws. Magpul's newer design should relieve some of them as well I believe. There are some additional perks I'm planning as well that aren't related to a quad . . . or more . . . stacked magazine which would be nice I believe. It's hard to bring an idea to fruition however without skilled specialists at one's side.

If you're going to the trouble of redesigning magazines, get rid of the stacked coil spring and use a constant force ribbon spring like the old Ramline .22lr magazines. I think someone (maybe Bolen) was working on this about the time the Federal Assault Weapon ban/10 round limit took effect and it was never finished. The Ramline magazines worked very well, but the plastic feed lips were very susceptible to damage.

Sorry I was having a bad day of cabin fever with warm weather and gale force winds keeping me off the range. After I posted this I looked at all the time and work Gentleman Jim (Firebird) put into his comp design that I guess there is still room for new ideas. :eatdrink:

I've got the engineering part covered. I make prototypes of new inventions and my GF does the CAD drawings. She has a Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering and does that full time, I've been a Tool & Die maker for almost 35 years and have a complete machine shop at home with 2 full sized CNC mills among other tools. If you want, call and come over sometime and I'll tell you if I can do your project.

Awesome, I'll appreciatively take you up on that offer as soon as I get myself organized. Where abouts do you shoot around here?
