chefjay
I am wondering if anyone can help me with my problem with my major 9 G17...It has a 13lb recoil spring, tungsten rod, a briley barrel with a comp that has 4 up ports and 4 side ports....The problem is that the slide will not go full back into battery...It only hangs up about 1/16th of and inch...The gun was finished by BrianH and he told me that it is just tight and needs to be broken in...I have about 300 round through it already but it is getting better...Last night I got 5 shots in a row off...The load I am using is 8.6gr HS-6, 124gr Zero FMJ, 1.135" oal, WSP primers...If anyone has any suggestions that would be great.....Thanks
chp5
Sounds like the recoil spring isn't getting the slide back into battery.
vincent
Check your ammo in your barrel to make sure that every round seats fully in the chamber. If the cases are not sized properly or they are too long they won't always go all the way in and can keep the slide from closing fully. Try the gun with good factory ammo. Check to see if it happens when the gun is empty (no round or magazine), when a (known good) round is chambered (but no magazine), or when both a round is chambered and a magazine is inserted (mag totally full and then again with only a couple rounds). This will help determine if it could be too light a recoil spring, too much resistance from the magazine (strong springs, top of mag dragging on bottom of slide due to feed lips or follower out of spec, or even the magazine catch being worn and allowing the magazine to get a little too high and then holding it there), or extractor fit and tension. I have personally seen all of these things cause the problem you have described in pretty stock Glocks so you will need to do some experimentation or send the gun and magazines to a good Glock smith for a more in depth inspection. cpty1
Do the Glock recoil spring test, to ensure you've got the proper poundage spring, or to ensure it isn't worn out.
B.J. Norris
Chris, I can't believe you would say something like that. My gun has failed that test with a brand new recoil spring, and the only jams I had were mag related. Is it possible that the slide is hitting the back of the comp? Just a thought. cpty1
What you lubing that gun of yours with? Valve grinding compound? I've never had a problem with that test....though admittedly my Glocks are shall we say....well broken in..?
Custom Glock Racing
I suspect its a chamber/ load OAL or ogive kinda problem.
George
I don't think it's the spring either. I am running a 13lb spring in my open 17L with pretty much the same load and it's fine. It is more likely an ammo size, or chamber fit thing. Check ammo in a drop gauge and the bbl, check headspace with your empty sized cases. Fire some factory 9mm ball and even if cycling is odd with lower PF, it should always return to battery or you have a gun fit problem. 13lbs is plenty of spring to go into battery reliably if the ammo is good, the mags aren't dragging and the chamber is reamed properly. If it's really a "wear in fit" thing, then IMHO, things are too tight to start with and the barrel/slide fit should be checked by a Glock specialist. -- Regards,
