ErikW
I don't recall ever gauging factory ammo. At the first Vegas 3GN, I couldn't unload the Q3131 (not A) from the chamber until I did the butt-smack trick. The round wasn't straight. The Q3131A was doing 3120 fps from my stainless 20". Kinda surprising considering the non-A did almost that from my chrome lined 14.5". I was shooting moly rounds so there might have been a moly build-up that slowed it down. Maybe you got a "hot" batch of ammo, or maybe your barrel was just unusual. Most 14.45 inchers will yield under 3000 fps with either Q3131 or Q3131A. ErikW
I'll check my notes, but it's lot PF10 and it made 3300 out of a Colt 20". Giddyup! It wasn't even a hot day. I'm saving it for the black helicopters and JBTs.
rhino
Sounds like a hot batch! Rainy day ammo for sure, especially if it groups halfway well.

rhino
It's supposed to be essentially the same recipe as the Federal XM193 ... but you never know until you chrono it yourself! Thanks for the info!
lmccrock
Sounds like a hot batch! Q3131 got that reputation a few years ago. See Ammunition FAQ for some experience (scroll about halfway down). I shot some Q3131 during that period (1999/2000) and had so many problems, that I will never buy Q3131, just to be sure I never get a bad lot. After firing, the brass stuck to the bolt, would not feed, all kinds of things. So, Erik, your problems with Q3131 are not surprising. Q3131A is ok; Win white box with box codes like USA223R1 is ok. No more Q3131 for me. Lee

xsrdx
Just got 3200 out of some Federal AE. I didn't realize it was that hot. I shoot the red box AE223 all the time, 55gr FMJ. No problems with flashers inside 350yd (even 16" - 1x9) although I'd probably use something heavier if wind was a serious consideration. For the most part though I prefer the 55gr trajectory, and it hits plenty hard. Q3131 has a checkered past, as noted. I've downselected to Federal and Black Hills for 5.56. ErikW
Lee, did you notice Q boxes are labeled "5.56 mm" and the R boxes are ".223 Rem?" Height of bullet trajectory above or below line of sight if zeroed at yards.Sights 1.5" above bore line Now that I would like to see. (Iron sights on a bolt gun maybe?) Ain't gonna happen on an AR-15.Ed, what did you use for the B.C.? The wind drift looks a little pessimistic.

Run n Gun
"Q. What sort of velocity and ballistics should I expect from military ammo? M193 should give you around 3200-3250 fps from the muzzle of a 20" weapon and around 3150 from a 16" weapon. M855 should give you around 3050-3100 from a 20" weapon and around 2950-3000 from a 16" weapon. lmccrock
Erik, Q boxes are labeled "5.56 mm" and the R boxes are ".223 Rem?" Yes. That particular rifle's barrel is marked "5.56". That reminds me ... I need to check with the builder of my 3-gun upper about its chamber. xsrdx, No problems with flashers inside 350yd How big are those flashers? Thanks. I really need to pick one brand and stick to it. Of course, going to the range and testing a new lot is its own kind of fun. Lee
