Steve J
We were shooting the weekly Thursday night Steel Challenge match. The match director was shooting a major manufacturer's LR through a Buckmark when a kaboom tore the gun up. The top strap was visibly bent to the left and springs were sticking out where the extractor and/or firing pin had been. The case head was cleanly separated leaving a brass tube. Hard to believe and not good. I only saw the aftermath. Maybe he'll chime in with some details.
Fullauto_Shooter
That really sucks! Never heard of a .22 doing that before. I would have never guessed that a .22 could generate that kind of pressure. Wonder if the wrong type of powder got loaded? Hate to hear about a good gun getting ruined - wonder if the ammo manufacturer will make it right or issue a recall? Do you know what brand & type the ammo was?
Zebp45
I heard it as I was walking past and turned to see smoke coming from both ends of the gun. Not Good.
Zebp45
I plan to find out because we shop at the same places.

Steve J
Turns out it wasn't the ammo after all. A screw came loose in the gun that allowed it to fire without being fully in battery which resulted in the case separation and the kaboom. After replacing a couple of parts the gun was fine. Not a real whoopie design IMHO.

SLM
If the top strap is bent, I'm not so sure it lived.

jONESIE
A S&W M&P15-22 fired out of battery at a local match. It blasted the RO a little, but no injuries. There are too many rimfire guns that are capable of firing out of battery. A trigger that only operates with the bolt or slide fully forward is a true safety device that would prevent malfunctions from becoming dangerous. Patrick Sweeney
I suspected an out-of-battery slamfire. The .22LR is a lot more prone to that than most would think. And the "lowly" .22LR runs at the same pressure as a .38 Special+P. Not something to screw around with.
Outbreak
I kaboomed a p22 at the local steel match. Mine really did blow the top strap off. Its visiting S&W right now.
