Connection, How to Run a Trace on Windows

Recommended Posts

On my home computer (Windows Vista)I cannot connect to this site. I get a messageasking me to diagnose the connection problem. Then something like Reset your connector. I click on that link and get a message that the computer pinged the site and got no response. It also says there may be other connection problems.

I can go to any other site I want and it just began doing this this weekend. It wouldn't connect this morning. I've restarted, shut down and rebooted but can't get to www.brianenos.com from home. This is from my work site.

So there you have it. Any suggestions?

I have had several instances of "timing out" when navigating around the Benos site in the last week or so. A friend has had problems not being able to connect with the site form his personal computer. Seems like the site has much slower response to requests to move around in it.

A couple things. Maybe someone on Windows (in Mac) can tell you how to run a Traceroute to the server's IP address:

74.55.30.98

Can you get to:

http://www.brianenos.com

Or:

http://www.uspsa.org/ (hosted by the same company as my server)

And last, what is your home computer's IP address:

http://www.whatismyip.com/

For Windows you can enter the following from a command prompt:

tracert brianenos.com

...or...

tracert 74.55.30.98

From my machine:

Tracing route to brianenos.com [74.55.30.98]

over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 1 ms 1 ms <1 ms 192.168.6.1

2 9 ms 7 ms 8 ms 192.168.30.1

3 1 ms 3 ms 2 ms gw1ipswitch.augusta.ipswitch.com [12.197.170.1]

I was surprised to see so many hopes once it got to "ThePlanet".

Average ping times for me are less than the 110ms shown in the tracert.

Mike,

I googled and found what's below.

But I'm not sure why there is two sections with Windows Vista in the Title? So if you have any additional info that would be cool.

Also, you are not told how to exit MS-DOS mode?

How to get to a MS-DOS prompt / Windows command line.

Windows NT, 2000, XP, Vista, and 7 users

Click Start.

Click Run.

Type cmd or command and press enter.

Windows Vista users

Click Start.

Type cmd and press enter.

Windows 95, 98, and ME users

Click Start

Click Run

Type "command" and press enter.

This will open a MS-DOS shell. However, if you are attempting to troubleshoot an issue with the computer and are using Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows 98, we suggest you restart the computer into MS-DOS. To do this follow the below steps.

Click Start

Click Shutdown

Choose the option to restart the computer into a MS-DOS prompt.

If you are unable to get into Windows 95 or Windows 98 to get into a MS-DOS prompt, follow the below instructions (Windows ME does not have this option).

Reboot the computer

As the computer is booting, press the F8 key when you hear a beep or when you see "Starting Windows 95" or "Starting Windows 98." Windows 98 users sometimes may find it easier to press and hold the left CTRL key as the computer is booting.

If done properly the user should get to a screen similar to the below screen.

Microsoft Windows 95 Startup Menu
=============================
1. Normal
2. Logged (\BOOTLOG.TXT)
3. Safe mode
4. Step-by-step confirmation
5. Command prompt only
6. Safe mode command prompt only

Enter a choice: 1

F5=Safe Mode Shift+F5=Command prompt Shift+F8= Step-by-step confirmation [N]

4. Select the option for Safe mode command prompt only.

I don't remember if NT had it, but 2000, 2003, and XP all had a "Run" menu option when you clicked "Start".

Windows 7 no longer has that but instead has an entry field just above/next to the Start button when you click it. That entry field can be used to search and/or run programs.

Many versions (including 2003, XP, and Windows 7) also give you a "Run" prompt if you hold the Windows key and hit the letter R.

To exit a cmd prompt you type exit and hit the enter key.
