125gr JHP w/ Solo 1000 Kosher?

Quick question for you folks. I have a bunch of Solo 1000. Can I make a decent minor load with Solo and 125gr Zero JHP?

How much Solo would get me around 130PF?

Any recipes?

Thanks!

I shot a bunch of .38super Zeros behind 4.2 grs or my old batch of solo loaded to 1.130. 130PF. When I switched to 124gr MG bullets and the old batch of solo I kept it at 4.2 grs for the same PF. My new batch of Solo needs 4.5 grs to get the same PF. New lot is #1930 on the white sticker. Old was 1420 or some such number. All of my loads were with RN so OAL will need to change a little perhaps. YMMV. CHRONO IT.

9mm I should have specified. Not sure if that makes a difference. I just wanted to make sure that Solo 1000 could push a jacketed 125gr to 130PF without any pressure issues.

Yes. Somewhere in the low 4.? range as mentioned. Also as mentioned, solo has a rep for lots of fluxuation between jugs/lots so this makes chrono a necessity. But yes solo 1000 works for 9mm 124 bullets.

That was in a 9mm. My G34. So between the .38super and later some 9mm MG's they were pratically the same.

As someone said above, you need a chrono if you want to run Solo 1000. I started at 3.8gr based on posts in this forum and found very low velocities. My S1000 lot number is 1877 (5/14/09) and it appears to be one of the slow ones. After initial tests, I switched to PD 124FMJs because they are reported to be faster than MG 124CMJ. My tests with same loads of N320 and TG confirm that and show that the PDs are 12 - 16 fps faster than MGs. Recent results using either MG 124CMJ or PD 124FMJ 9mm bullets (WIN brass, CCI SPP, 1.150").

MG

3.8 S1000 = 947 (PF 117)

4.0 S1000 = 974 (PF 121)

4.2 S1000 = 1003 (PF 124)

PD

4.4 S1000 = 1048 (PF 130)

4.6 S1000 = 1069 (PF 132)

4.8 S1000 = 1083 (PF 134)

As you can see, I did not test the same loads with S1000 using both bullet types, but my analysis of the results indicate that PD 124FMJ is ~15fps faster than MG 124CMJ with S1000 (consistent with N320 and TG).

as always, YMMV

Great post.

I have never used solo but had been wanting to try it based on all the Solo love on this board.

I get 130 PF with 124 CMJ MGs @ 1.135 OAL with

3.7 of Clays or

4.0 of N320

The N320 recoils more than the clays to the extent I have to click my rear sight down 1 click when using it.

The Solo would be even more recoil.

PD

4.4 S1000 = 1048 (PF 130)

  • 2 weeks later...

Took 4.6 with new batch using 124gn frontier plated bullet 1.135OAL to make 130pf in my Trojan.

Suggest you start a little under as Solo seems to vary quite a bit from lot to lot.

I am pleased with Solo.

I'm testing a new load this weekend for MG 124 CMJ based on a new lot of Solo. Unfortunately, the 8# keg I got from powder valley did not have a lot number sticker on it.

I really wish the lot consistency didn't vary as much as it does with Solo 1000. Based on some initial testing it looks like I may need to go from 4.2g to 4.6 or 4.7 to make 125pf.

I will probably order several jugs next time and see if I can get the same lot numbers. The powder is great but lack of consistency isn't very fun.
