  2. RiggerJJ,

    Thanks for the feedback,

I assume you are talking about the new FP custom aluminum ramp installed? Last week, Jim said they are cutting new ramps right now. Availability is probably 4 weeks out yet from being completed. Sounds like maybe you got in on the early testing or prototype run? I've already told Jim I wanted him to do my ramp as soon as the new parts are ready. Sounds like they just grind out the old, fit the new, add a couple pins and screw to hold it in place.

If this is what they did for you, how long did it take them to turn it around and get it back to you?

    All,

This gun is very new to me still. The above two vids from last weekend are the only rounds I have through it and I just took possession of it last week! I have a few other questions too for you guys that have the FP Fully Custom Akdal and are running it successfully in competition... I'm also new to 3-gun, so sorry if any of these questions are too newbish or just plain dumb... I'm still learning here:

    1. How often (round count) are you guys breaking down to clean bolt, carrier and barrel?

    2. Are you installing any additional 3rd party products to the gun beyond what FP has done for open division? Like a poly choke, larger than 10-rnd mag, factory bolt handle, addition to FP non-recipricating charging handle... bipod... etc?

    3. What kind of anti-carb / cleaning products are you using on the bolt and carrier. I've been having very good success with FireClean as it seems to just eliminate carbon build up.

    4. I have a 45 round capacity with my mag setup. That is two FP 10-rnd mags, 1 FP coupled set of 10-rnd mags, and 1 5-rnd factory mag. What kind of mag pouches / rig system are you guys using for this thing?

    5. Did anyone have to loctite the saftey selector screw... or any other screws? I noticed my safety selector started getting loose due to the screw on the left side starting to back out. Just screwed it back in, however, the factory 5mm hex head screw holding on the adapter under the buttstock also was loose after 250 rounds so broke it down and secured that as well. Both could just be attributed to new build and first rounds breaking the gun in, but curious if I needed to be aware of any extra care...

    6. Are there any common buffing, tuning, sanding or other tweaks being done to ensure these things are running the best they can in competition?

    7. When you zero the dot for a shotgun, are you zero'ing based on the birdshot, the buckshot or what I assume is... the slug.

    8. What is a good range to zero for the slug?

Very happy to find others shooting this thing in Open, I love the gun and the work Jim over at Firebird Precision has done for me!

    Thanks all,

    1. 300-500 rounds. Ill add a little oil in between though.

    2. Nope

    3. CLP

    4. M1A belt pouches for 5 rounders, 3gungear .308 t-rig for gen 1 mags, unknown molle radio pouch for gen 2 mags.

    5. I think I put loctite on every single screw on mine.. they'll all come loose with time if you dont ;)

    6. I polished some rough edges on my bolt, but that was all I did after I got it from Jim

7/8 I like a 75y slug zero. That will get you a couple inches high at 50 and 5-10" low at 100, depending on ammo

  3. so it would seem, Aimpoint Micro plus DAA is a way to go that no one has had issues with in a major open gun. is there a sideways mount for the Aimpoint that either brings the dot closer to the slide or moves the buttons out of the way ? what about the fact that the dot is 2 MOA smaller than traditional Cmore one ? or are you guys shooting 2 MOA...

I just ran BRM3G with my Tanfoglio Gold Team with an Aimpoint H1 in a DAA mount (this: DAA Mount )on top and I loved it. I turned on the dot before the first stage and turned it off when I packed up my guns after the third day :)

I had no issues with the dot being 4 MOA either, as a matter of fact, it might even have been a benefit since we shot at pistol targets out to 115 yards. :D

The dot is so crisp and bright that it doesnt bother me at all that its "only" 4 MOA.

  4. Does Henning do work on pistols as well, or is there someone else I should be sending my gun to? Now with my first season in Open in the books I've decided to stay there, so I need to get my guns spiffed up for next season. Nothing fancy, mainly just a trigger job.

I use the new Safariland 014 for my Gold Team. Love it. I also shoot 3-gun, and have day dreamed about going open there so I can use the Gold Team.

However, I've only used it in a couple of USPSA matches. It's been great so far, but I haven't had to run, crawl, jump, etc with it, so I can't say how it would do in a more 'physical' match like 3-Gun.

I'll let you know how a Gold team in a CR Speed will fare at a physical 3-gun match in about a week or so...

Taking mine to the Blue Ridge 3-gun match this week and that match usually involves crawling, climbing and other physical activities.

Ran, crawled through tunnels, climbed walls and the gun stayed in the holster just fine :)

  6. BRM3G is probably my favorite 3-gun match to shoot, especially now when the weather finally played along so we could finish all days. :)

The stages were very well-thought through with plenty of opportunities to crash and burn if you werent on top of your game and gear.

Thanks to Andy, the ROs, the sponsors, the guys in squad 1 and everyone else that helped make it the awesome match it was! See you all again next year!

  7. This may have been asked before…

Are all the stage starting points accessible by car/truck?

Any need to bring my jogging stroller gun cart - or a golf cart?

I'm not shooting the match this year, in the past all the stages were driven to, a cart took up space in the vehicle, and wasn't ever needed. Depending on the weather, a 4WD is good to bring!

Depending on weather, a 4WD might be the only thing that will get you back from some stages ;)

  9. When comparing the cost of variuous open shotguns, you need to consider the cost of mags and upgrades. For the AKDAL, you only have 5 and 10 rounders available. The FB 10 rounders are a work of art but $140 ea and very tough to get. There are some other 10 rounders on the verge of coming to market that should be less $, but I'm not sure how much.

    <snip>

It shoots slugs just ok, would be nice to improve that.

Factory 10 rounders should be on the market within weeks, rumored MSRP is < $80.

Not sure what you consider good, but I went to the range to zero my Akdal today and my 75y 5-shot groups were around 4-5". Thats good enough for me...

  10. Just to amplify about the "sides" -- when arms hanging naturally at sides, they are not usually completely straight and are not right next to the legs. Thus, I use the "gray area" language in my previous posting. Again, the photos/videos in this thread are not anywhere close to being naturally at sides.

What also cracks me up is people who bend the fingers on the right hand to prepare for the draw... :)

  11. Since this was kinda hidden in another thread, I'll start a new one :)

The Molots have been used in IPSC over in Europe for quite a while now with great success, but up until lately they werent being imported into the US. However, it looks like that is going to change now, since both Centerfire and Mississippi auto arms are taking pre-orders with estimated delivery end of Oct/early Nov.

At $999 it comes with a pistol grip, picatinny rail and mag well, so you should be able to get a competitive Open gun for much less than the current $3000 Saiga conversions, slap on a comp, a sight, maybe a new stock and trigger and you're pretty much good to go.

  12. Also, it looks like Molot VEPRs are about to hit the country and since these will come from the factory with a pistol grip and mag well, they should be way cheaper to convert to a race gun than the current Saiga imports.

So, if you prefer AK style over an Akdal, buying an R&R Saiga now might be a bad move, probably better to wait a little. The Molot VEPRs have been used in competition for years in Europe, so there should be plenty of after market parts already, including magazines...

  13. One thing that was brought up by a previous poster and myself is that yes your going to see open guns malfunction they need to be maintained. Every AKDAL I have seen in person has malfunctioned and in your video yours did as well. However if you do that maintance and I am speaking for the R&R it will run. Open guns in general need more TLC than Tac Optics guns, just the way it is. I bet many of the R&R's you see with issues were operator error on maintance. Is it a gun you can just shoot forever without cleaning like a Benelli no. Neither is the AKDAL. Glad to see some people have gotten it running better. I have also seen mys hare of tube fed open shotguns choke. The longer I have had my Saiga the better its gotten. I am not sure why Firebird has not put a bigger comp like the one on the R&R Saiga on their shotgun. Also bigger mags need to be made. I am happy to see another mag fed shotgun competing with the Saiga with more competition comes better products. I would love it for a mainstream company to produce a mag fed shotgun, say Benelli or Remington. As for your buddy with his 20 round mag have him send it back to Rob he will take care of it. My first 20 round mag did not work the replacement I got works great.

Absolutely, Open guns need a lot more TLC than most other guns, no disagreement there. I also quite sure that there arent any open shotguns that never malfunctioned :sight:

There are definitely aspects of the Saiga that will make it a more attractive to some buyers than the Akdal, especially if money isnt an issue. My objection was basically against the statement that the R&R Saiga is more reliable than a Firebird Akdal, since thats not necessarily true in my experience. I also assumed we're talking Firebird Akdals vs R&R Saigas here? Are both your buddies non-working Akdals Firebird built guns with Gen 2 mags and the new springs?
