  1. "Rules for all 3GN Series are currently being updated, and prize programs for next season’s races are being developed. Additional announcements pertaining to rules, prizes and qualification to Shoot-Offs and the 2014 Pro Series Qualifier will be coming soon."

Don't jump the gun (stupid pun intended) too early. If it is true and once its published and its official, then let the hate rant begin... I know it would hurt me as I was planning on shooting HM/O or TI/Limited as I just got those setups going. And the same kind of rants were going on at the end of the last season when they implemented the different series. But I do have to say they need to get things straight and soon, three years and three different sets of rules. Still I do kind of view it as "open beta", but when spending almost 1k+ per match (fees, gas, lodging, ammo), not to include equipment, its kind of hurting a bit (speaking from a non-sponsored shooter view). TV and sponsors aside, will this effect prize tables?... idk, we'll see but if... "IF" it makes the other divisions smaller at matches, you can see the shifting of where the prizes go to accommodate, which might irk a few people.

The good part is that they learn and adapt, rather than sticking to something that doesnt seem to work out of principle. Communication of those changes could definitely improve though, as could the web site.

  2. One of the new rule changes for 2013:

"in 2013 3GN Semi-Pro competitors must shoot Tactical Optics in order to earn 3GN Semi-Pro points"

EPIC Fail. I guess I will just sign up for divisional. I hope this doesn't goat screw the other divisions though. Hate to think that nobody will be shooting Open or Heavy because 3GN wants everyone to shoot TO. Sucks too, because you can't sign up for divisional and amateur, just divisional and semi-pro.. how f*#king stupid is that.

I doubt it will affect Open much, but Heavy and TI might get hit a little since that was a fairly small jump from TO if you wanted easier points. Also, if you were good enough to aim to make it into Pro, you'd probably want to be shooting something closer to TO, since that's what youd be shooting next season ;)

  3. Just an FYI - coupon code "BF15" will get you 15% off at Copquest through Saturday 11/24

The ELS is a good rig. Took about an hour or two of messing around with the positioning of the various clips to get it set up, but once set up it is rock solid.

User error maybe, but I think that the only holster (with gun in it) Ive ever seen come off a rig during a stage was mounted with ELS.

  4. firebird fully race tuned Akdal with $140 ea firebird mags,

Factory Akdal 10 round mags are now available everywhere for ~$75 each. Hopefully Jim's 5 round extension will be available in time for next season, giving us 15 rounds :)

And I agree with Alaskapopo, not being able to single load rounds is not really a big issue. Game it and stack your rounds, or add a few extra burn rounds for margin, or simply switch mags...

  5. i was looking into an xrail down the road if i go with the tube gun. I do like the idea of the akdal but i am alittle worried about the reliability.

X rail guns can be finicky too. No matter what open gun you get it will take more TLC to get to know what it needs to be reliable. My R&R Saiga runs like a champ now that I have figured out the ammo it likes and the maintance schedule it needs. I have seen plenty of tube guns have issues as well in Open.

    Pat

Currently, the Akdal isnt any less reliable than a Saiga or XRail. They are all somewhat finicky and need some TLC to run well.

  6. "Find another plater that has an FFL & specializes in gun coatings." Thanks, though I'm looking to have TiCN coating applied by a company that has experience with firearms and there don't seem to be a lot of them. Coating Services Group seems to have experience, examples of pistols are given with almost every coating flavor, and are reasonable in terms of both price and turn-around. I am, however, open to suggestions.

...seems like I need to give them another call, perhaps they have an FFL and I misunderstood. CA law, as it pertains to anything to do with firearms is confusing at best and I'm told the CADOJ is not entirely clear about was is and isn't required. Thanks for the input so far...

At least as of June 2012 they had an FFL, if these are the guys:

COATING SERVICES GROUP LLC 11649 RIVERSIDE DRIVE SUITE 139 LAKESIDE CA 92040

So, it would be perfectly legal for you to ship the frame directly to them. However, not all FFLs choose to accept guns from non-FFLs, so if thats the issue you do have to find an FFL that can ship for you. The CFLC process that FFL would have to go through can be completed in minutes, its no big deal.

  7. I hope that 3GN asks or strong Arms the matches that want to participate in 3GN to use similar rule sets for division requirements. If a match doesn't offer a division it should t be a part of the division series. It would be really nice to be able to use the same guns in the heavy divisions at all the matches too!

Or they could just drop the smallest divisions from the division series, since that would affect fewer shooters than dropping whole matches from the series :P

On a more serious note, I think that 3GN trying to strong arm matches is likely to just turn off MDs and shooters. There are already quite a few shooters that arent too happy about 3GN and I think a move like this is likely to annoy more shooters than it would please...

  8. You don't have to be an FFL to be a gunsmith. If they are pushing this, I would find someone else in a free state to do the work.

Sure, you can call yourself a gunsmith without having an FFL.

If you run a business doing gunsmithing without an FFL, youre likely to get a visit by some not very amused ATF agents.

    ATF definition:

    (d) Gunsmith. A person who devotes time, attention, and labor to engaging in such activity as a regular course of trade or business with the principal objective of livelihood and profit, but such a term shall not include a person who makes occasional repairs of firearms or who occasionally fits special barrels, stocks, or trigger mechanisms to firearms;

Also, it would be against federal law to ship a handgun to a non-ffl, other than to the legal owner.

  9. Hmmmmm.... this is a plater, not a FFL holder in CA. They were clear in stating that I, as an out of CA/state resident, non-FFL holder, would have to have the frame sent to them by an FFL-holder in my state, in addition I would need to file a DOJ application to ship into CA and that form would need to be included with the shipment. I asked if the DOJ document was state or federal and was told it was a federal form... perhaps that was incorrect and it's a CA application with the CADOJ? The plater, Coating Services Group, seemed very familiar with the process but was not specific about the process for obtaining the DOJ form.

If they dont have an FFL, how are they going to be able to do work on your guns?

Also, an out-of-state FFL cant ship a gun to a non-FFL, unless its the legal owner.

I'd stay away from these guys....

  10. cool thanks for all the help and I have a copy of the atf letter from Saiga-12 that states there are 14 parts.

Well, as always with ATF letters, theyre really only good if theyre in your name. Unfortunately, if they suddenly decide that the Akdal has 15 parts, that letter isnt going to offer any protection.

but you probably already knew that, so back on topic :)

  11. I emailed Pete a few questions the other day regarding some Semi Pro rules. He told me that we would be looking at the 2013 Semi Pro rules within the next 7 days. That was 2 days ago. He didn't say if that would include the schedule also. I feel pretty certain that if it doesn't, then the schedule will not be far behind. I have a feeling that they will not wait very long. They know we need the schedule since the matches are opening up for registration.

I wonder if theyre going go change it to Tac Optics only, since I dont think any of the top finishers this year actually competed in TO?

  12. The trigger is the trigger and disconnector which is two parts and the hammer would be the 3rd with the gas pistion and the trigger kit i would be down to 10 parts. That is with using factory mags.

Under the assumption that the Akdal only has 14 parts? Personally, Id consider it to have 15 parts, unless you have a letter from ATF in your name saying 14, just to be safe.

I switched to Open this season when the Akdal came out, since I had no interest in a Saiga or tube gun and so far I love it. You cant go wrong with an Akdal :)

There are still some rough edges here and there, but hopefully all that will be resolved in time for next season.

  13. Looking at doing it myself will be 25 for the trigger 25 for the hammer and 35 for the pistion. That plus 650 for the gun so I am at 735 for a converted gun versus 1199 from centerfire.

Cool, I thought the parts were more expensive. However, replacing only three would still get you 11 or 12 parts (the only ATF letter Ive seen says 14 parts, but doesnt seem to be accurate since it doesnt count stock/grip, which would get you to 15) if youre using factory mags, right?

  14. My buddy's Czech mate ran minor handloads and factory ammo just fine OOB.

After replacing the recoil spring and a worn extractor, my Open Tanfoglio now has over 1k minor handloads and factory (115gr Am Eagle) rounds through is without any issues.
