I have been wondering about the fastfire 4s. There doesn't seem to be a tremendous amount of information out there about them. I know you said that you wish the window was taller, but I would love to see a side by side picture with that and your vortex venom if you still have it. Since I have a venom I would be able to get a really good idea about the window size. All the Burris optics I've had in the past have worked well whether they were red dots or scopes. So I'm pretty interested in that fastfire four for the future.

No problem,, heading to the shop to dig for a Carver mount , I just mounted the Burris IV on the 617,, will mike all three and see if I can get a decent pic

  2. capacity arms race pretty much stabalized in open and limited as folks figured out it didnt matter a whole lot. Back then I think you had more steel frame guns,, and 15 probably was fairly standard.. But today is to0day.. You probably find 17 pretty common.. I imagine a 126 or box rule would stabilize things fairly soon. Might have guns with a 1 round advantage..and yeh would kill any 40 production guns.

One of the reasons I still use some sort of vortex a lot is the warranty, while their sight is not as good as my sro, i ain't a pro shooter and if my dot goes down in the middle of a match it is a much smaller loss than than cost of more expensive optics with shorter warranties. As for future dot purchases it will probably be vortex or Burris for me, solely because of warranty. Another SRO probably won't happen because of cost so hopefully the one I have last a long time

While I have never had a vortex or Burris die on me yet, I do leave the back up irons on my gun for a reason LOL

I am fine with 3-5 years, I figure something better will be out by then anyways..
I had 2 vipers die,, 1 sorta my fault/design issue.. open bottom made getting new battery in hard and I bent the nub.. Replaced.. That guy has been going strong for some time including a season on a 200 plus pf slide ride. so maybe 4 years ? Had it on my steel .22 in a frame mount.
just this week though I couldnt get it to zero.. would be slightly off make a small adjustment and it would jump 4 inches. I could probably send it back, but never liked the open bottom design and haveing to remove it to change battery..
I had a Venom that was on my 617, and put that on the 22/45.
New in box Burris IV went on the 617 for ICORE. I liked it bettter than the III, I could actually get the battery in.... The dust cover though resulted in much cussing, as it uses the 2 tinniest screws known to man... It will have to come off to change battery and I dont see it going back on...  I wish it had a taller window though dont recall if it has a shake to wake function or not.
I prefer the FTP sight the most.. due to its taller window.. Not sure how much that will help on the clock. I have it on my 627.

I voted in favor for three reasons:

    - Normalization w/IPSC Rules

    - The 10 round limit was a genuflection to the (BS) '94 federal ban

    - The (BS) '94 ban EXPIRED 20 years ago

The fewer reloads thing was a by-product and a gift.

    YMMV

pretty much only positive I saw, other than was a half measure. Shoulda just gone with a box or length rule.

  5. I have a railed single stack 1911, granted its a Rock island, but carver makes a couple different models.. I had to drill and tap an extra set screw,, probably due to the out of spec Rock island POS,
saw this mone, looks like an STI 2011 in the pic the black part on top comes in different setups for different optics,, IIRC mine would be for a viper/venom/burris... You can buy just that piece..
If I can find it I will let you know this afternoon, I have ZERO use for it..  found I shot pins better with irons.

We fixed the definitions of creeping and false start in the SCSA rules to mirror the definitions used in USPSA.  Basically any movement before the beep is a false start and it's a stop and restart.  Creeping is when the competitor moves at the same time as the beep, which hardly happens.  99% of the time it's a false start.  The RO should not start the timer if the competitor is moving, but very occasionally the competitor starts moving right as the RO presses the button.  That would be creeping.  Before the button press, then it's a false start.

sorry but thats just dumb, There is no requirement to wait until the beep is over.. Moving DURING the beep is called starting.  Just made something very simple that every other sport that starts with a beep, bang or light has figured out complicated.

I was going through a mixed bag, using a 9mm shell holder to sort. My theory was that Super (semi-rimmed) would not enter the shell holder. As I progressed, however, I was 38 Super headstamp cases entering the shell holder.

I did not note if all were from the same manufacturer, but it showed there is a wide latitude in the rims.

Manufacturers do not always abide by SAAMI. SAAMI still specifies the 38 Sper headspaces on the semi-rim, and most have, to my understanding, changed to headspace on the case mouth as standard. How many ammunition boxes do you see marked "45 Long Colt" when the official SAAMI name is "45 Colt"?

I believe it would, overall, be best if the 38 Super dropped the semi-rim to be a true rimless case.

probably correct.. the only guns that need the rim probably shouldnt be shooting 38 super level loads anyways. and stick with 38 Auto...
According to chart I looked at it seems Everyone but Remington has done just that and all 38 super ammo is now near rimless.

Perhaps newer brass is more consistent, but in examining brass a while back to sort between Super and SuperComp cases, I found that there are 38 Super marked casers that matched SuperComp rim sizes.

well considering super comp is rimless, or even with web like a 9mm,  and super has a rim somebody isnt making Sammi brass if its marked super. Super comp should be .386   while super is .406..
Back in the 38 auto and maybe supers headspaced on the rim,, but switched to case mouth head space long ago making the rim irrelevant.

Found an interesting chart,, looking like Lapua and Armscor are making 38 super ammo, but basically using 38 super comp specs..  What brand did you have ?

That concern is among the multitude of things I never understood. If I have to do a standing reload because of the course design then everyone else in my division does as well and I always found it fun when you could hit a slick reload as well as a reward for that practice time at home.

yeh at least a standing reload is a skill other than run fast

He also shortened the OAL which was probably more of the solution. Main Reason why you test One Thing At A Time!

no my question was why go to a Barsto ported barrel to begin with  if he is wanting to shoot minor PF tightgroup loads. He spent a bunch of money to accomplish nothing.. Factory barrels are plenty accurate.

  11. For a single stack ? and for carry ? I would probably go with 38 super as you can get factory loads if you go that route.. and its possible you wont be able to go back and forth with the same extractor.. Maybe an Aftec.
The advantage of Super comp was a smaller rim even with the web, that hair made a difference in higher capacity mags , usually adding up to an additional round and better reliability. In regular double stack  mags, and single stacks I never had an issue getting 38 super to feed.

  12. Alot to do with why ? just caught the ported part,, again WHY ?  Ported to reduce recoil but its so tight you gotta up powder charge to get it to run ?  Then you are running one of the fastest powders available guaranteeing the ports do even less ?  What exactly were you trying to accomplish ?

IMO "Challenge" is good.  I had a great time shooting Single Stack 5-6 years ago.  but all 32-round stages "because then the Open guys have to reload" and "who cares about 8 rounds per position anymore?"  quickly turn "challenge" into "not much fun" and it's no wonder people don't stick with them.

yeh couple times I shot single stack I felt like a 1 legged man at an ass kicking contest.
At one time IDPA kinda defaulted to lots of 12 round stages... Everyone reloaded once and only once.  6 , 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11 round guys .

Great responses. Sounds like I'm over worried about failures in battery. I can spot cracks easy. Its the signs of overpressure and buldge that i was worried about, but maybe i gotta let go.

    dont over pressure your loads

  15. Looking at that pic though,, is that as far as you are getting ? Was thinking OAL in a tight chamber at first.. But you are getting failure to feed not failure to chamber..
Shorter OAL may help.. I mean its not a 1911 made for 1.2 ammo.. 1.150 is getting a bit long..  you are also sitting at 120 PF.. pretty light for that gun if you are running stock springs. and XDM's dont take kindly to super light recoil springs.
Is there a reason you are loading that long ? Like you also use it in a 1911 that likes longer ammo ?
If not personally Id clean snot out of exctractor, and drop OAL to 1.130 and up the powder to hit about 130 pf.
I mean you have gone to a tight accuracy driven barrel. Your ammo is going to have to be ideal to get back to the level of reliability you had..  Pick up a box of Blazer 124's if your gun runs fine, problem is you ammo

    When I was a kid, I swear factory .357 was a 125gr bullet going 1425fps.

    Has that changed?

I was thinking 158 1200 was the standard... Hey what manual is that a paste from ? looks kinda like a Lymans layout.. I have #47  and a 50 something which isnt worth a flip BTW.. but 47 has nowhere neear that charge weight... Is that for a carbine or TC only ?

    Very true!

Being a department firearms instructor for 14 years and a USPSA shooter for 27 years, it's been my experience that attitudes like this is why we don't have more LEOs involved in this sport!

you mean the attitude of jerk off cops that think rules dont apply to them ? Yep I totally agree
