I've seen that one, but they don't have anything close to a nine major load. 357 gets a big jump going to a rifle because of the higher powder capacity than nine, but nine major I would think would be somewhere between 9 mm and 357 as far as the velocity jump is concerned but, that's just me speculating LOL. Maybe somebody has done it.

Corbon 125 +p in a 5" 1911 is 164 pf,, and only pics up a few fps in the longer barrel carbines.   169 in the Berreta storm

  2. I am in Marion Kansas, moved here from Virginia a couple years ago..  I have shot steel up around Topeka and ICORE east of there. bit of a hump for me.. I pretty much just shoot the Icore when I can.  Not worth the drive for Steel challenge.
There are a couple places north of you, but they dont really keep their websignts updated, so not 100% sure whats going on with me.
If you are into track meets with some shooting there is a PCSL 2 gun club that is getting started, they put out their stages on face book. They should be pretty local to you.. IIRC a bit south of Wichita.  I get home in May and am gonna look into the club in Hutchinson.. See what kinda matches they do.. I think it was USPSA

  3. with the time and money it would take you to do this project. You could load a bunch of 9mm then switch your press back to 45..
But eh if we went by logic we'd all have lots of room in our gunsafes.
I have my IDPA gamer gun.. Single stack 1911 40 I built years ago on a caspian frame gathering dust in my closet.. Should break it out. Probably been 15 years since I shot it. I built it in Hawaii 10 round land, So shot standard with the the longer extended 10 round mags... Briefly tried to get normal length 10 rund mags to work without success. FIgured  out I was better off with 9 round mags in IDPA and used those for a year or 2 after leaving HI..
Think I shot one single stack USPSA match and felt like a 1 legged man at an asskicking contest.
IIRC I used a Barsto bushing barrel..
I have an old 40 Para ramp para ordnance 40 bushing barrel laying around somewhere if you arnt in a hurry you can have. Seems like I ran across it recently looking for something else. I get home first of may can look for it.

Getting back to Joe late on this one. Hitech on Bayou bullets. IIRC, I used TG on some 45 loads with Precision Black Bullets. Those had a proprietary coating. No smoking that I noticed.

the precision moly coated smoked with tight group, they even said dont use it.. I mean t wasnt enough to really cause much issue.. I think once on a really hot humid day with no wind and sun at the right angle it was pretty noticeable .
I still have quite a bit of it, and pretty sure I am mostly using Bayou bullets these days..  I have a case of 38 short colt sitting at home and some Bayou 147's,, may load some up,.. Guess thats a side affect of chasing latest greatest,, or changing sports/ platforms.. You end up with lots of partial jugs of powder.
Ive got plenty of American Select, WST , tight group, AA2, and clean shot that all do about the same thing...

In my revolver n320 was a LOT dirtier than 231.  I could see instantly my brass was cleaner when I switched (only because I ran out of 320 and it’s currently unobtanium)

    Cheaper AND cleaner?  Win win.

man little changes and experiences give people completely different perceptions of componenets.
I started out in IDPA, and hard cast waz/ grease lube days.. I loaded tight group then WST..  everyone on here acted like 320 was the beeze knees... Never tried it, as it was double the cost..
Only people using 231 was the old timers in 45's again with these wax lubed hard cast.. they were dirty and smoked like freight trains,, probably loaded to pretty low pressure.

Just find it funny that you see 320 as dirty and 231 as clean.. guess its all in the application and 2 powders can behave differently in different uses.
Before covid I ran into some bulk deals on AA2 and probably have more than I will ever use.. I imagine if I had run into the same deals on 231 or 244 Id probably be just as happy with it.

Given 244 is more dense, I assume it will be cheaper per round?

I've got 24lbs of 231 so this is more for curiosity than anything

Powder is sold and loaded by weight not volume so its density wont make a difference in price per round.. Burn rate will determine grs per round,, so again nothing to do with density.
In general a fuller case burns more consistent.. Thats the theory anyways.. But loading with powders like tight group makes me wonder if thats true. People seem to do ok with it in 45 acp.. and that theory says it should be horrible.

    What am I missing

I'm using 244 don't compete but when I look at the numbers it has a very low standard deviation, high velicity per charge weight, very accurate metering, versitle for many calibers

    inexpensive and available

Why is it not more popular

its a reformulated 231.. basically they found a cheaper way to make it.. This powder  came out or got known about the same time Sport pistol, and Cleanshot (a reflagged Accurate #2) came about.
Its low volume to charge weight made me think it would have consistency issues. Although tightgroup is pretty low volume and works fine.
Clean shot and Sport Pistol became available... I am only just now seeing 244,,  People already decided on what they wanted to use and were happy with it.
Another crowd just stuck with VV 310 and 320... Used to be VV was expensive.. There price stayed about the same and Hodgdons jumped up in price..
Basically actual availability of 244 missed the boat.. Although Sport pistol now seems to be getting rare.
244 is also a bit slower than some of the more popular 9 minor/ 40 major loads and probably has just a bit more bark than say A2..  244 is probably a really good all around powder for people that load a little bit of every thing and arnt all that concerned with top velocity or absolute minimum recoil.

I'd assume from reading his post the shooter had the gun at 12 or 1 as is fairly typical for AIWB. If you're right handed and start facing 45* to the left, So you're looking at 10-11:00, you gun you're gun is likely pointed past the 180 the instant it pops from the holster. Some where around the 7:00.

Not sure IDPA's rules on this, but in USPSA even if the muzzle is down you can be DQ'd the instant the gun pops from the holster while the top of the holster in pointed past the 180.

seems like that would require a move like drawing cross draw,, Hard turn to right,, draw,, then shift back around to where ever the target is..  I only ever did mounted shooting with western gear so 180 wasnt an issue..

Yes he did.  His carry was about 150 deg  and the starting position was 45 deg, so he was WAY past 180.  His buddy running the stage didn't care.  Now a 45 deg start was unusual but he should have taken steps to stay safe and legal.  But he didn't.

trying to follow this,, can you describe using clock with 12 being straight down range  and belly button of body ?

Lots of the common 12ga trap and skeet powders make great pistol powders for our gamer loads.
American Select is a favorite for every thing from 38 short colt/9x19 to 45acp.  Others are red dot, promo, 700x, e3, clay dot, nobels GM3…you get the idea.

For a Plan B powder check out what your powder source has in stock.  Shotgun powder usually has good published load data for pistol loads, too.

For everyones info,, Highgun is re labeled tightgroup, for whatever reason. Hodgdon wanted a new powder .

In the past, TG was pretty commonly recommended on this forum. I haven't been able to reload for a couple of years but used a ton of it in the past with 147gr coated. Never a problem but didn't like the fact that it only filled a small volume of the case. Switched to Sport Pistol which I have quite a bit of.

    what kind of coating ?
I have a bunch of tightgroup still I quit using back in my moly coated days.. Might try it again
Yeh alot of people used it in 9 minor and 40 major as it was cheap, seemed to be always available, and it worked well.. As mentioned only issue was smoke with the pre  hitek style coatings, or wax lubed.  Jacketed and copper bullets were more common then before prices got stupid.. I was gathering all my 40 ammo and came across a couple boxes of tighgroup under 180 gr HAP's 40 major match loads..  I used to shoot HAP's at matches and Precesion Moly coated and local hard cast wax in proactice.

  12. anything but tight group,, But really Hiteck coating is alot less smokey than the old black moly coating or the uncoated lubed stuff. So really Tight group may be fine.
Usual suspects for 9mm minor, 320,  Accurate number 2, CLeanshot, American Select,   I mean really you can go to a burn rate chart and look between E3 and Unique and pick one.
Clean shot which is the old Accurate #2 seems to be a winner on price and availability.. Id probably stock up on that and call it good.

  13. dont see a quotable rule,, and SC doesnt have a catch all phase for unsafe gun handling..  While I imagine it would go over like a ton of bricks, I dont see what specific rule would apply.
WHich brings us to.... If the general philosophy we expect RO's to follow is. "DOnt be a dick"  We sorta gotta expect the shooters to "DOnt be a dumbass"

This is in the appropriate forum (General Reloading, 9mm/.38). I have a ton of HP-38 so that is what I will be using until my supply is exhausted.

I was just hoping that someone would post an approximate amount of grains to use with 147g coated round nose for Minor PF.

I appreciate the information though !

scroll down said forum,, the information is posted many times,, but as you are set on powder and bullet you just need a manual

  15. look in the reloading section.. Look at a burn rate chart, pretty much anything from E-3 to unique will make decent 9mm minor ammo. SHooters worlds powders havent taken off in price yet, I stocked up on Accurate 2 / and clean shot.. which is as good as any and better than most.

whaaaaaat, that is friggin ridiculous.  certainly some if not most, of the dq-able events in uspsa (180, handling ammo at the safe table, removing holster with gun in it not at a safe table, handling your gun outside a safe area, etc) have no bearing on actually being safe outside of a match.

on a more practical matter, are the cops really going to keep a list somewhere of all this?  public or private, where is it posted or saved, who is responsible for updating and checking accuracy?  does this list include issues outside of competitive shooting - guy puts one thru the floorboard or a wall in his house, etc?

perhaps this is just an April 1 thing a few days early...

that was my thoughts as well. COps dont even do anything about actual crimes when you call. Somehow I dont see this being recorded anywhere, past whoever answers the phone saying ,,"thanks"

  17. not watching the video,, but I agree with the politicians.. Not because its a foriegn firm,,, but because its a firm already in the business. We used to have anti monopoly laws and enforcement in this country. Too much consolidation is a bad thing for consumers.  Look at the price of powder now that Hodgdon owns almost everything.. Same with primers,, almost all under one roof

That is an old wives tale.  Any actual chamber flag will not melt.  I've been using one for years.  Even after a 64 round monster match stage where you rip rounds off like a machine gun, it doesn't melt.

"I don't want to hammer down because the firing pin may break"  Another old wives tale.  In all the years I've been ROing SCSA matches, I've never seen that happen.

I dislike string, zip ties, etc.  If drop the hammer for PCC goes away, I also object to NRA style chamber flags that fill the ejection port but do not go into the barrel.  There could still be a round in the chamber.

The reason they are called empty chamber indicators is something goes into the chamber.  Otherwise, you don't know it's empty.

you must not own rim fires..
its not the breaking of the pin, but dry firing will very much peen the side of the chamber and it doesnt take much..

I agree with the bag thing,, when carbines were allowed they shoulda just made a few edits and made trigger guard covering case, the same as a trigger guard covering holster..

  19. ah,,, yeh I started strong hand reloading,, but noticed all the cool kids did weak hand,, took me a bit to unlearn strong (right for me)  then get smoother with weak hand.. Once I got the knack for it, it does seem to have less steps and will be a bit faster.. Probably would be really good at it if I had actually practiced since oct..

  20. well back when we all shot cast bullets, folks would go with conventional rifled Glock barrels..
But in the OPs case,, DId you get a base line of how the gun shot stock ?
In a modern auto loader design consistency in the relationship between the barrel and the sights have the biggest affect... You changed the slide and the barrel,, Probably ended up with stacked tolerances.. Barrel to frame, slide to barrel,

I was thinking, while reading through this thread, 'now try it with a revolver!' I have to decide which reload to use (strong hand or weak hand) depending on the direction I am running. (much the same with an auto) to keep from breaking the 180.

I am working now on standing reloads with the revo. There is so much movement that is hard to be fast. Really fast.

I think cs's comments are spot on; break it down and do it till your hands bleed!

FWIW, with a revo, I try to dump the moon clip as soon as done firing and run like heck till about 2 steps from the next box and drop in the clip just before I stop to shoot, getting the gun up as I stop. Seems to be the fastest for me from my testing. Better that than tripping over my feet!

Of course, shooting against mostly autos it doesn't really matter, but it is nice to know...

I dunno, so then you are runnign with the cylinder flopping everywhere ? I dont see me ever doing much of a runnign reload with a revolver. Not as much movement in ICORE,

  22. check Lee's websight  they have powder scoops and bushing type powder measures that dispence in Cubic Cnetimeters. Their websight has a chart that will tell you how many grs per CC..  Will let you compare the relative size of powders per gr of weight to each other.
Lets see of the powders I hear people using for 9 major HS6 and Win auto comp and 3n 38 will tak eup less room for same weight.. Probably why they became popular when th eworld moved from 38 super to 9mm
See if this chart works.. Bigger number means less room per grain..
    https://leeprecision.com/files/instruct/VMD.pdf

  23. I would think it too fast for 9 major..  Looking around it seems like it was its own thing, I woulda guessed it was a Lovex powder that could be had under a shooters world brand now... But now that Hodgdon owns everything, you will probably see alot of consolidation and some powders get dropped, and as we are seeing prices get jacked,, Buy out the competition, shut them down, raise prices.

HS6 is a pretty fine grained powder and seems to be readily available and common for 9 major loads.
