  1. I agree with Doug, good call. I can probably make January, cannot make December!
  2. Great match, challenging stages, and still through in time for a decent ETA to la casa 2.5 hours away. Good idea to shorten stages a little and lower par times to speed up match and create more stages. U da man Fred Q!
  3. See you Sunday Fred. May have my 13 year old grandson along to see what the gun thing is really about.
  4. Will see you Sunday Fred, bringing a bud. Alan
  5. I got my 15" 2 weeks ago. Love the light weight and it stays cool no matter what. It will move slightly but not enough to matter-Im guessing all 15" have some leverage working. I dont know how durable but its supposed to be incredibly strong AND AP is a good dude and am sure he will make good if any reasonable problem encountered.
  6. Great match again Fred. It's always worth that long drive. I really appreciate your hard work.
  7. Got your back. Will loan u my 3 gun cart, no chg for a bud. Met u at college station. Just give it back in condition I give it.
  8. Jesse Hotels: Have stayed nearer the water in past and was very disappointed with the mold from hurricane floods years ago. Started staying at courtyard and Hilton and while more expensive, was worth it to get decent rest and not be sick at match. Doesn't sound like much til you done it...
  9. Another fun match on a unique range. Like Ken mentioned, no bays per se, rolling countryside, SHADE, and yesterday at least-no wind and great temps. The match director asks for critique every month and makes this match better each trip with competitors input. Great job Fred! See you next month, Alan C
  10. I shot the match yesterday 8/27. New MGM spinner is indeed a hoot to shoot-get your timing right and away she goes...or not. The new Riflemans Ridge stage was a really fun combination of near and far targets engaged from 4 different positions and was the only real physical running portion of the match. All stages except 1 have shade, a blessing in these temps. I really like this range for its rolling natural terrain and shooting positions. Fred has worked super hard to fine tune the stages, build berms and alleys, and his stage design pretty much challenges the shooter and eliminates gaming. The scoring system has no peer-up to date match results on the fly in seconds. All the stages have movement but you are shooting and/or loading while moving vs a dead run to a different postion. The moderation of the hard running brings welcomed emphasis to good shooting technique, manipulation skills, ammo management vs just physically surviving the stage. No match setup or tear down is definite benefit. Its a 130+ miles from my digs to aggieland but its worth it-fun factor = high. See you guys next month, keep up the great work. Alan
  11. just returned from registration. Seamless flow in stats shack. Shooters packet and match brochure are very professional. Setup also looks spot on. Great job Sheldon and staff! Alan C.
  12. I love my 1-4 Razor as well. Their customer service is as great as the optic itself. I had a problem, received the UPS call tag on Monday, shipped my scope back on Tuesday, had a new scope back on my rifle the following Monday. Its a fair piece from Texas to up north when they got that white stuff everywhere and they still provided a one day turnaround. Wont be my last Vortex. Now if Jamie can just get me hooked up with a cap....!
  13. I really like my z6i. The BRT reticle acts like a large chevron for short range blasting. The super good glass has superb clarity so you see long range stuff @ 6X that would take 10X with other scopes to see. The magnification is low enough that long range has minimum mirage even at 100+ temps over road base deck. Lightweight, short length, at least I dont regret (too much) spending the money for it.
  14. Ive had a POF 308 for almost 3 years w/3k+ rds thru it. The ftf is probably slightly hi primer on ammo or NATO ammo w/super hard primer. I get one now/again too, I really dont think its a gun problem. Mine shoots great. I use a suppressor now/again-still great results. I did find the right brake will make it fly for 3 gun matches.
  15. I too seem to get a change in POI w/monopod off mag. After some experimentation, it was discovered that for one to be monopoding off the mag in the first place, the shooter is typically prone. Apparently shape and age become a factor when an egg trys to hold a stick w/another stick in its middle steady. I regrettably and apparently suffer from both of these conditions. Shane and Jim M do not (Jim may be getting a bit fluffy since he retired ) so dont know what their excuse may be. The position induces recoil in more directions causing rapid followup shots to require more concentration for proper placement.
  16. I shoot a 16" POF 308 quite a bit. I also have a 16" POF 223. I had reliability and accuracy problems at first w/the 308 but POF made it right and I am very happy w/it now. In search of maximum recoil reduction for the 308 as I shoot some 3 gun with it, I tried several muzzle brakes. The SJC on it now is clearly the choice based on what I have tried so far and its black color matches my rifle. In fairness and not to mislead, I didnt get around to trying any brakes that were stainless, not black so dont have a clue how they might work. I have a vid of me from a recent match shooting the rifle at a port and the muzzle doesnt move and Im not being shoved around. A bud brought his new hi end DI 308 w/big name brake to my range to zero his new optic. We shot side by side, my rifle had noticeably less recoil. Finding the right brake for my app made the difference, not DI vs Piston. As owner of 2 AR platform piston guns that I really like, I can only say they seem to fix a problem I didnt know I was supposed to have. My experience is if you maintain your equipment DI vs Piston is moot point and even if you dont, the piston still needs TLC now and again or it dies too. The recoil from the 223 piston rifle feels different but is not more or less (just...different)w/same brake on equal DI gun. The piston guns do stay cooler on long hoser stages but the hot barrel is more the problem than the op system. Other op rod rifles like FAL and M1A do have noticeable differences in recoil I dont think you can fix with a brake due to their design. Thats a guess given I have not spent a great deal of time trying since the large caliber ARs have become more prolific.
  17. my 9mm Eagle w/bushing barrel is the one I would keep if I could only own 1 pistol. Mine has more than 50k rds downrange. I own several other top end 1911s, this is "old faithful". I use only STI factory 38 super mags from Brownells because they always work all the time. No other followers, floorplates, etc to clutter the works. Replace the mag springs, now/again, youre good to go. Im tickled at all the tuning on factory new gear, gimme a break...they dont make or sell crap so why fix it before you try it? No shok buffs, no snazzy BS other than DP fiber optics. And mine has the formerly banned (who thought that sh** up) factory recoilmaster. No problems. Lots of fun, what else is there? A VIP for a carry gun...Papa Bear and Mama Bear!
  18. I have been carrying a VIP in CompTac holsters for a several years. I have a belt holster marked sti vip and am using a ctac w/no marking. I dont remember if I modified a commander ctac model to fit or if it came that way. I recently bought a Raven brand holster for a commander and tweaked it to work for the vip. It takes a heat gun, empty pistol, and patience. Dont heat but a small area at a time then cool it before moving on. If you dont, you will have a kydex pocket that wont fit anything. The slide and dust cover are slightly wider than a 1911 so the holster requires TLC there and I have tightly molded the kydex around the thumb safety so it cant disengage with the pistol in the holster. The VIP is my "plastic" carry pistol and serves the dual purpose of backup to a same caliber 2011 for match use since the mags interchange. A "party stick" (170mm mag)in your murse completes the ensemble.
  19. Ive hunted in the Rocky Mountains and South Texas for many years. They are bigger in the mountains and probably harder to kill in S. TX. given the environment they exist in, one of those "will to live" things. Ive shot many calibers and let the air out of many head of game. Consistantly the 300 win mag does a dandy job from prairie dogs to elk (no you dont eat the pds, especially after the big boy pops em) and from zero to as many yards as you can probably shoot responsibly. The recoil is moderate and doesnt crucify the shooter. The ammo is easy to find in a pinch. The round is inherently accurate, and rifles chambered for it abundant. Left to only one caliber for hunting, this scores very high. My current rifle (THE ONE-emphasis intended)is a Kimber 8400 Montana with a Leupold VariX III 3.5X10-40 in handlapped Leupold mounts. We verifed bedding, the action true, etc. Was prepared for expert TLC but none required on this mid priced production rifle. I shopped hard with no particular budget for rifle or scope so a custom whizbang ninja brand was within the realm and many were considered. This combination gives me a 26" tube to burn the magnum charge, very lightweight for humping that bugger through the aforementioned mountains, and enough scope for any practical/legal situation I have experienced thru the years. I have had numerous other rifles in this caliber and others. This one does 3/4 moa for 3 shots with several premium ammo types and a little better w/handloads. It does this at 105 degrees in central TX, and at 9 degrees at 9000 feet in Colorado. Im not sure what you need but this combo is working well for its specified use with enough dough left over for a good hunt to use it on. I have killed big game with it past 500 yds (and have missed 1 or 2 easy ones up close, see hunters excuse list for more info). One should consider the package required for the task. Accuracy aint everything, but it does help and provide confidence when the that one shot presents itself. On the other hand, life is short, buy one of each you want! My 2 cents worth
  20. you had the second fastest run and were the only shooter that got all his 250 yd flashers with 1 shot each. As your RO on that run, you did an outstanding job on our stage. It was our error so Im very sorry the OBR wasnt loaded for you the way I briefed the stage costing you at least a second or 2 but, you executed a malf/failure drill seamlessly. I sincerely hope the oversight didnt cost you the status of the fastest run for the stage. We (the ROs) tried to make the stages absolutely consistant for all shooters. Perhaps not consolation but, you made it look like it was supposed to happen the way you ran it. Considering an event this size, we are proud everyone got thru with only minor aggravation, a few bo-bos, and nobody left with more holes than he/she started with. Everybody's a$$ was draggin but all ate well, took him great goodies. Reckin what the po folks was doin? Alan Colley
  21. I found a pair of black Peltors, I think tac 7s. They were left at my stage 4. I turned them into Linda at the stat shack. I didnt notice your name on them but I was pretty fried by then so could have missed it. Perhaps Fred Q might bring them to a cove 3gun assuming they were still at Cawthon. Alan C.
  22. Fred & Bob: great job, great range, great targets. All: Fred is not just another "pretty face", his target designs and gun racks show true inspired thought, not just blowin smoke and yes, that observation will deserve some decent Irish as kudos. The stages were great fun and gave plenty of challenge. Almost all the shooters had the "wheels turnin" when they came to the line, some of us should have... I have shot those ranges and beyond, the wind was a consequence but not like last years 1st day Larue. It (Larue) will be a kick in the pants. A few shooters got to find out how their kit works (good/bad) and some of us got to realize we should eat less, exercise more, and find better pain meds-both parties will get over it. Its about 120 miles from this casa but I will be there when you have something working. Alan C
  23. Bob, Thanks for the early call, much appreciated. Saves a lot of prep for naught. Alan
