When I shot 147 gr. lead bullets in my 9mm I used 3.4 gr. W-231. With plated and jacketed bulets I use 3.4 gr. Bullseye or 4.0 gr. WSF.

Forgot to mention I shoot 38 Super in revolvers. How tight is the Starline 38 Super brass in Ranch Products moonclips?
their waist measurement looks pretty standard. see table 1 at the link below.
superdude,
Manythanks for that reference. I'll use my Starline gift certificate to purchase teir 38Super +P brass.

I use RemOil on the internals.

Just wondering what you're using to straighten out bent moonclips since it seems the Moonclip Saver is no longer available. Moonclips to me are fairly expensive, so they're worth trying to fix.
I use the Ranch Products moonclips whch are inexpensive and discard them when they are bent.

Anyone have recommendations on a .38 Special load for plinking with a SW 642 Snubnose. All I want to do is punch holes in paper comfortably.
Two choices for light loads.
The 147 gr. LSWC with 2.7 gr Bullseye at ca 780 fps or a my personnal preference for a 158 grr. cast lead bullet with 2.8 gr. Trail Boss at ca 650 fps. Trail Boss produces some very mild loads with lead bullets and the Hodgdon website has lots of load data.

In my experience, about the same as the S&W factory clips if that is any help. I keep both types on the same dowell.
Do you mean that the Starline brass is just as tight as the W-W or R-P brasss in the factory and Ranch moonclips? I received a gift certificate for Starline brass abd 38 Super is the only clabiber for which I need brass. I do know that the Starline 38 Special cases are much too loose in the Ranch Products moonclips.

How tight is Starline 38 Super brass in the Ranch Products moonclips? I have used R-P and W-W but never had any Starline.

I opted out of the case feeder option. I inspect each case before sizing and each powder drop. That allows me to average 300+ completed rounds per hour.

I have always used either R-P or W-W brass in 38 Super. How does Starline brass compare? Is it as durable?
-
In my limited experience single stack 1911's in 40 S&W are more fincky feeders than the tried and true 45 models.
-
In 40 S&W I shoot both an STI Trojan and a Dan Wesson Pointman. The Dan Wesson would be my first choice.

I have used Winchester, Remington, Federal and Magtech primers. I tend to use Winchester in my semi auto pistol loads and Federal in my revolver loads. The Federal, Magtech and CCI primers are nickel plated and the last batch of Remingtopn I used were also nickel plated.

Clays is not a suitable powder for 9mm. There are a number of fast powders which perform well in 9mm - Bullseye, VV N-320, Titegroup.

Ranch Products moonclips ($75/100) provide a nice tight fir with Winchester brass ans nickeled cases but cannot be used with Starline cases )much too wobbly), Rem and Fed are in between in fit.

You can purchase a mount which will fit teh dovetail for Docter, JPoint, C-More STSand other red dots from BME (Black Mountain Engineering). They have made me custom mounts for a very reasonable price.

Hi I went to my first Tuesday night steel match this week and had a tun of fun. Now i am trying to decide which gun i should use with the plans that if i was going to modify or make improvements to which would be the best to start with. So i have a Kimber Pro Raptor II and the Sti Spartan both in 45acp. I reload all my own ammo as well so is it better to shoot minor loads for Tuesday night steel ? Thanks
Are you shooting Tuesday steel at Rio Salado? A friend of mine uses an old Colt Gold Cup with 230 gr. LRN and 3.5 gr. Trail Boss - you can almost see the bullet going downrange. I believe he uses a 10 lnb. recoil spring. The steel goes down without any problems.
-
I use the Ranch Products moonclips - at $75 per 100 they are great value and work well with all brass except Starline (too loose in the moonclip).

I have used my 617 as it came from the factory - almost 10,000 runds fired. The trigger has smoothed out quite a bit since it was originally purchased. I would not advise replacing the standard FP with the extra length FP it will cause some damage to the cylinder face. I have not experienced any relability issues with the standard FP.
-
My S&W 617 functions reliably with a wide variety of ammo. IOt even digests Remington Golden with only the rare ignition failure (ca. 1 every 300 to 500 rounds).

Lot's of marketing but good old Bullseye is as versatile as powder as one can purchse for pistol reloads. Lot's of good pressure tested data in everything from 25 ACP to 45 Colt. I shoot a lot of mild reloads and Bullseye is still a favorite powder.

I cannot understand why Lee does not do a redesign of their press to accomodate all brands of primers.

My Marvel unit 1 has performed flawlessly for am,ost a decade using SV ammo. I use Wolf Match Target or Aquilla SE but CCI SV also works well

I have used 3.8 gr. of VV N-310 with the 185 gr. Star LSWCHP for ca 790 fps. it's a very accurate bullseye psitol load.
Tried this load today using Zero's 185 LSWC-HP and 3.8 VV N310, 2.15 COL. Tried 10 rounds with almost no crimp, 10 with .03 and 10 with .06 using a Redding taper crimp die. Amazing how tight the group got with the tight crimp. I won't quote the size since I was shooting off a manual rest. I'm going to repeat this with a machine rest. Oh, this is a super soft load too.
Ben,
If you want a super soft accurate load good out to 25 yards try the following:
3.8 gr. HS-700X, Rem 2.5, 185 gr, Star LSWCHP at ca 715 fps.
