  1. I have 17lb mainsprings in my other (2) pistols but they are both .40's. What is the lightest spring you can use in a .45 and still have 100% reliabilty? I just bought a new SA TRP and the trigger is nice, but comes in at 5.5lbs. I would like to get it down to ~3-lbs. I know that I can monkey with the sear spring, but the Main-spring has to be part as well. I am hoping a drop to 17-18lbs will allow reliabilty and a slightly decreased weight as well. What about a titanium cap, and strut? Will that help with weight, or just lock time and "cool-factor"?

A lot depends on the load you use. A friend shoots steel challenge using a Colt NM in 45ACP loaded with 3.5 gr. YTrail Boss and a 230 gr. lead bullet - you can almost see the bullet bgoing downrange. He uses a 10 lb. recoil spring for reliable function.

  2. I have not used Clays in my revolver loads bjut I can attest that Titegroup does get the bafrrel and cylinder really hot. I have disconstined use of Titegroup and opted for Trail Boss with lead or plated bullets in the revolver calibers and either WST or American Select in the pistol calibers.

  3. Simple enough question, not wanting to start a caliber war. I recently picked up a 442 and love how light and easy it is to carry. When I look at the caliber on paper, I wonder if it is something for everyday carry. Any opinions would be appreciated. I did a few searches on BE and couldn't really come up with anything. Thanks in advance as always.

    Lee

I carry a S&W642 wth the short barrel Gold Dot load.

  4. bmiller,

Get rid of the Lee factory crimp die and insure that when using the normal crimp die you only remove the bell formed during expansion. Most plated bullets have a very soft lead core and can easilly be damaged by sizing them down or cutting through the plating.

  5. Got my new Dillon press up and running. Great machine. Even the kids say it looks like a little factory.

Loaded 124gr bullets with 4.0 grains of Bullseye. XDM 4.5 ran great with this load and the felt recoil was lighter than factory 124gr ammo.

My question, Do I need to chrono this?

How important is the chrono measurement?

I am shooting USPSA as production, minor and yet to be classified.

I chronograph every load. I used Bullseye with the old 124 gr. Star FMJ. my data shows a bit less than 1100 fps for 4.0 gr. Bullseye and cq 1170 for 4.5 gr. Bullseye.

  6. The EGW-U die is actually a Lee Undersize sizing die. Lee also offers Overize sizing dies. I tried the Lee U die in 9mm but fouind that my normal Dillon die does as well. I scrap brass from the high pressure 9mm and 40 S&W cartridges after 4 reloads.

  7. PROBLEM SOLVED

I wish to thank everyone for their valued suggestions. The EGW extra high mag catch did not solve the problem but I experimented with different mag catches and magazines and learned a lot. What worked for me was the suggestion from Roy Hess - I loaded the rouinds to an OAL = 1.18" and then used Metalform 10mm magazines - now it runs like a champ.

  8. I'm fairly new to shooting and looking for some advice. I would like to buy a 9mm pistol to be used in a combat league and I'm having some trouble deciding what to buy. I have been looking into a few first is the Springfield XDM 5.25 I'm told it can't be purchased in NY as of yet. Then there is the CZ75 SP-01 not sure if available in NY as of yet. Maybe an M&P pro9 There are so many options but I want to find a good reliable accurate gun that I don't have to break the bank to buy. Any input greatly appreciated.

I shoot a number of 9mm's. My favorite 1911 is a Dan Wesson PM-9 in 9mm - super reliabilioty and accuracy.

I also shoot a S&W M&P9Pro, S&W 99, CZ-75 and Glock17. I prefer the ergonomics of either the S&W's or CZ to the Glock. I also prefer the trigger of either the CZ or the S&W's to the Glock.

  9. I'm loading 45acp with a Dillon 550B. I'm using mixed head, range found brass, and loading FMJ. I've noticed that about a third of my rounds will not case gauge. Some drop to the rim, but sort of hang there because the rim has been somehow deformed. Some don't make it to the rim because of bulging towards the rim. However, I've loaded about 900 rounds and all, but about 4, will freely chamber into my pistol's barrel. My present protocol has been to mark the ones that won't gauge, but will chamber; shoot them at the range, but don't reload them. So what's the deal? Is my experience typical? Is the Dillon gauge too tight? Is a Wilson gauge better? Should I be reloading the bulged cases that chamber but don't gauge?

When I encounter 45 ACP brass which has a deformed rim I corect it with a file. I use the rounds and then save the cases for reloading.

  10. Personally I would not rechamvber the cylidner for 9mm. I would opt for the 627 in 38 Super.

I tried using 9mm 124 gr. Montana Gold JHP and some older 147 gr. Star FMJ's in my 627. The problem was obtaining sufficent bullet tension to hold the bullet. I found that the miliotary 38 Special cases did the job. Both bullets provded ca 2 inch groups at 50 ft.

  11. I know you are suppose to wear eye protection and some say ear protection when you reload, but has anyone every personally had an incident that warranted such measures? Has anyone set off a primer while priming a case, loading the fill tube, picking them up from the tray? What happened? Any reloading explosions? Just how danger is this reloading activity?

I have never had a primer discharge in my reloading presses. I always wear safety glasses since I kmnow of two fellow shooters who have had expereinces with primer detonation.

  12. Hey all,

I'm getting started into loading, and I'm overwhelmed by choices. I heard you could save money per round loading, but some of the FMJ and stuff I see is like 20c/round, which after primer/brass/poweder puts me right up to almost factory prices.

The only real cheap stuff I see is lead, but I hear they are harder to load, foul the barrel, and you have to keep them slow.

I'm wondering if there's any reason to not shoot lead SWC out of a 5" 1911 in minor loads for steel shoots and practice. I would do major stuff with FMJ or swagged (is that right) since it will be going faster.

    thanks for the noob help!

I shot a lot of 185 gr. LSWC at bulseye pistol matches out of my SA Trophy Match and S&W 945PC. I loaded using 3.8 gr. HS-700X for ca 720 fps (very accurate and mild load out to 25 yards) and 3.8 gr. VV N-310 for ca 790 fps which was accurate at 50 yards.

  13. My SA Trrophy Match has been super reliable with 185 gr. LSWC , 185 & 230 gr plated, 185 & 230 gr. JHP and 230 gr. FMJ bullets. A very accurate gun which required changing the innards since the factory trigger was a mushy 5+ lbs.

which part of the action did you change, like sears and hammer, hammer spring and what else, would you mind to specify every detail of it please.

I replaced the hammer, sear, disconnector and hammer spring with a set from Frerking Gun Works. I have also used the Cylinder & Slide 3 1/2 lb. kits in other 1911's. A fellow shooter chose to have a trigger job done on the factory components. I opted to have the factory components available if I ever sell the gun.

  14. PAra's quality control has really gone downhill over the past few years. I have an P14-45 Signature, PO16-40 Limited and PO18-9LDA Limited and they have functioned reliably to date- knock wood!
