I have a Dan Wesson Pointman which is fitted with both 9mm and 40 S&W uppers. I had one upper made in stainless and the other in blue so I could readilly distinguish between them.

I have shot the STI Trojan, Dan Wesson PM-9 and SA 9mm Target. The SA Target was reliable but would not group better than ca 5" at 50 ft. The Dan Wesson is equally relaible provides ca 1 in. grups at 50 ft and has a tight chamber - no issue with factory loads but after ca the 3rd reload you have to use the barrel as a case gauge (probably the best case gauge for any match use). The STI trojan functions reliably but the finish on the slide wears very rapidly - it's not quite as accurate as the DW PM-9 but more than accepatble.

I have never bothered to roll size brass. i use once fired 40 S&W brass which has been previously fired from Glokc's with a set of lee dies in my Dillon 550. The end result works well in four different semi autos. I only reload 9mm and 40 S&W brass 4 times before consigning it to the scrap pile. The 38 Special and 45 ACP brass is reloaded until it starts fraying at the mouth.

I do not know the dimensions of the dies on the SDB. I use once fired 40 S&W brass fired from Glock's and a Lee dies on my Dillon 550 - they work well in all four of my pistols. I find it difficult to pass up free brass from police who shoot at matches in which i participate.

I use the 8 round Metalform magazines. They have been reliable in my 1911's including a Dan Wesson Pointman, SA Trophy Match and several US1911 converions.
-
I do use Trail Boss with the 158 gr. Berry's plated RN bullet. In my limited tesing the plated bullets provide ca 10% lower velocity than a comparable lead bullet at the lower end of the recommended range and appear to provide velocity similar to lead bullets near the top end of the recommended loads.
-
I use Trail Boss powder and have experienced fairly tight velocity spreads.
-
In 9mm and 40 S&W the ramped barrel will provide greater feeding realibility especially with HP bullets. In 45 ACP all of my non ramped 1911's will feed HP and SWC bullets with total reliability.

The Trojan is a great gun. I like the undercut frame and the scalloped front grip but their finsih literally sucks - I have never seen a Trojan that does not show excessive finish wear after a very short period of use. I wish they made the gun in stainless.

A while back I purchased 5000 of the 125 gr. IMI frangible bullets from Widener's. 4.8 gr. PB or 4.1 gr. Promo provide slightly over 0
-
I use a 158 gr, LRN or a 125 gr. Pointed lead bullet with Trail Boss powder. Virtually impossible to double charge a case with Trail Boss and one can easilly see the powder drop in the long 38 Special 0r 357 magnum cases.

At Rio Slada Sportman's in Mesa. AZ a dealer sells the Frontier bullest at the Tuesday evening steel shoots.

I get ca. 1040 fps with 4.3 gr. Bullseye, WSP and 124 gr. Montana Gold JHP.

Hey guys, I shot an ICORE match yesterday with a borrowed 625 and was hooked, now I know why they call us auto shooters in USPSA bottom feeders I went to the LGS today and they happened to have a new 627 in 38 super behind the glass, it promptly made its way to my truck.
I have heard that I need to use HearthCo moon clips, where is the cheapest place to purchase these? Also what brass should do you recommend that I use with the moonclips? I plan on getting a speed-e-rack holder. Lastly, what loader/unloader do you guys recommend for the clips?
thanks!
I use the inexpensive($75 per 100) Ranch Products moonclips and have not had any problems. I also do not cringe when someone steps on them.
When it come to the spediest relaods you cannot beat the S&W625 and 45ACP loads.

I purchased three 627PC's, two in 357 and one in 38 Super and a 625PC. All four have had excellent action right out of the box. I have seen some issues with recent production particularly the crummy slab sided grips (a cost savings measure).

Lots of good lubes on the market. In very hot climates a very light teflon or petroleum based grease will work well. I prefer to run my guns wet with a heavy oil.

Tony, thanks for the tips. How many people use 38spl. brass in their guns? Is it worth going to 38sc? I haven't had a chance to locate any of the sc brass and wondered how much shorter it is. Thanks for all the help,Dave.
twiter,
i have a 627 and an early 586-0 both cut for moonclkips and use the Ranch Products mooclips in both (be careful since the later serial numbers of 586-0 cannot use Ranch products moonclips since S&W changed the cylinder reaming which resulted in ca .007" in difference). I also use the Ranch products moonclips in both a 686 and 627 factory chambered for 38 Super. Personally the fastest reloads are with the big fat 45ACP's in a S&W625 - big holes in the cylinder and gravity working for you. I think your technique has to be at the top of the heap before you can see the impact of reload speeds on your ascores. I sue the plentiful and inexpensive 38 Special brass for most of my shooting.

My Tactical Solutions unit works well with the relatively inexpensive Kimber plastic and steel Metalform magzines.
-
My Dan Wesson PM-9 uses either the 9mm or 38 Super Metalform magazines with compelte reliability - great mags for ca $10 to $13 each.
-
I have noticed bullets pulling out of the cases when adjacent rounds have been fired using plated bullets with a taper crimp. I have not epereinced the same issue with either lead or jacketed bullets.
-
I have more than 10,000 rounds through two S&W 627's with the loack and have not expereinced a single problem. The revolvers function as intended.
-
I use the inexpensive Ranch Products moonclips which are quite tight with W-W nickel and brass cases and fairly tight with R-P and Federal cases but much too loose for use with Starline brass. At $75 per 100 the Ranch product moonclips are hard to beat.

I have an opportunity to buy a like new 625 with 5 1/4" Barrel (contoured like the newer 627 .357's), but can't
seem to find any info about this particular model ... The owner claims it came from the Performance Center
but I can't find info to verify it ... It must have been tuned by a great revolver tech, because the action is very
slick ... The guy wants $800.00 Firm which doesn't sound out of line since the new ones (4") cost that much.
Any info on this Model is appreciated.
I had one which now resides with my son. It is a PC version with a shortened cylinder thus the slightly longer barrel. Mine came with a PC aluminum case and gray-green grips. For $800 I would not hesitate a minute before purchasing it.

I used to shoot IDPA with a 5 inch S&W625 and would do so again. I gave up when they changed the rule to 4 inch guns since I did not want to chop an inch off the barrel.
(9mm 1911) Metalform/Dawson 10rd or "Springfield" 9rd Mags..?

When I owned a SA Target in 9mm it preferred the Metalfor mags with the Springfield cut. My current Dan Wesosn PM-9 functions flawlessly with either 9mm or 38 Super Metalform magazines.
