  1. I had a 550b for several years, and recently upgraded to a new XL650. I load 9mm only (about 400 so far).

Having issues with brass cases not seating in the Station One Locator track all the way. If I go slow, the cases seem to feed fine through the track and into station 1.

If I start to speed up, some cases will get stuck halfway down the track, jam the slide cam and never make it to station 1. Some will tip over at the shell-plate, or come flying out the left side of the press.

My bench is pretty stable, as I have it bolted to the wall and I'm also using the strong mount for stability.

I checked the troubleshooting section of the manual. Here is what I have checked:

    • Verified Station 1 Locator is #5 for 9mm
    • Checked shellplate bolt - very snug but shellplate moves freely
    • No debris in shellplate pockets
    • Re-adjusted camming pin. With a primed case in Station 2, and handle at full aft stop, case gets fully into Station 1 with a little play. Camming pin still in slight contact with the slide cam.
    • Re-adjusted case insert slide cam "wedge". Long slide faces shellplate. Tried adjusting position so back is flush with cam slide, also tried slightly forward.
    • Try to be smooth on up and down strokes
    • Checked Station 1 Locator for debris, cleaned and lightly re-greased bottom

What can cause cases not to seat in the track properly?

    Thanks!

  2. I wanted to have a simple list of changed rules that I can give to your average shooter at a match.

Here is what I have so far:

    1. Scoring is changed to 1 second per point down
    2. Fault Lines must be used to delineate “cover”
    3. Shooters can step on Fault Lines, but not touch anything on the non-cover side
    4. SOs do not give “cover” warnings anymore
    5. New IDPA Target with 4” circle in head (-0) rest of head (-1)
    6. Can reload anywhere, anytime as long as not exposed to un-engaged targets
    7. Shooters can re-engage a target from other shooting positions
    8. No more Tactical Sequence, only Tactical Priority
    9. No more Failure to Neutralize (FTN) penalty
    10. New Flagrant Penalty (FP) 10 seconds, requires MD approval
    11. If you run dry in the open, can reload and continue engaging

I miss when IDPA had a postal match. I think the last one was my first year of shooting and I always thought it was super cool that we were all shooting the same stages across the US.

    Agreed. That was really cool.

Why ask for advice on how to improve if you're not going evaluate it and try it?

if you want to "lock your tendons" and use your muscle to control recoil, then strengthen your muscles and grip the gun harder.

I never said I wasn't going to. I was just clarifying what Seeklander said, and that there is more than one way.

Here are 3 videos from Max Michel, Jerry Miculek, & Travis Tomasie talking about the benefits of locking your weak hand wrist.

As Seeklander said in his video, its more about locking the wrist tendons - not necessarily about having your wrist angled all the way forward.

Ben seems to do well with his support hand at this angle:

Don't wait on the sights to be back where it belongs, put them back.  On 15 plus yard targets (especially partials) I would not shoot while the sights are in motion, not an acceptable sight picture.  I would say these shooters are better at getting the gun ready to fire again.

Thanks for that video. I will have to experiment with that.

Here is another good I found. Mike talks about not needing the support hand wrist cocked forward/down:

Get a picture of the other side of your gun so we can see what your weak hand is doing, but the strong hand looks like its high in the grip like it should be.

This pic is from a match, so it's my actual grip being used:

As most have asked...what are your current 15yd splits and what are you hoping for?  Also, your grip picture is only showing part of the equation...  Right hand looks like a nice high purchase, but is the left wrist rolled forward and locked?  Are your elbows locked or slightly bent?

I'd have to look at some video of my matches with Shot Coach to verify, but I think on 15 yard targets when I'm lining up the A / Zero and shooting the second shot fast enough to have an acceptable sight picture - my splits are about .30 seconds.  When I'm trying to guarantee the 1st and 2nd A / Zero, they are more like .60 seconds.

I just shot 2 IDPA major matches, so I was really concentrating on getting 2 Zeros on every shot. When I watch my video, it looks and sounds a lot slower than I normally go for USPSA. In fact, even if I dropped a few -1s but shot faster I might have scored better.

What I eventually want to get to is how fast Seeklander is shooting in the video above (I shot the same match).

My left wrist is rolled forward (thumbs forward grip) but not overextended like Vogel has his left hand. I guess mine is more like Stoeger's where its neutral.  I will see if I can find a good pic.

I have always extended my elbows so they are locked. I have never tried to train them to be slightly bent. I understand that can act as a shock absorber, but I shoot a 147gr 9mm - there isn't much recoil, just a little muzzle flip that I need to settle down quicker.

I'm assuming that I understand your question correctly because I could also rip off .11 splits, but my splits on shots that required any real modicum of sight picture were much slower (well they are still slower than .11 obviously).  One thing that has really helped me is getting the right recoil spring in my gun.  Slow motion video helped.  When I watched how much my sights were dipping when the slide came slamming home I knew it was time to get a lower power spring in and it helped a lot.  I don't grip like a mad man and maybe that would help too, but just having the right springs is pretty big.

Yeah, on 15 yard targets - I'm definitely not getting 2 Alpha when ripping .11 splits. That's for close, open targets only. I have tried using slow motion video and different recoil spring combinations.  I have been using a 11# in my Shadow for a long time. Slow motion video showed me that 10# was too light, and was returning the POA a little high. 11# returned the front sight less high.  12# looked about right and put the front sight back where it was.  This was with shooting slow shots at a 15 yard target.

I tried the 12# recoil spring at my next match, and my accuracy was off.  Maybe I was just used to the 11# spring.

The other part of it is getting your eyes to really do the work that they don't naturally want to do.  Focusing on that sight picture as fast as possible and knowing the moment you can break the next shot is critical.

I've heard top shooters say get an acceptable sight picture, not a perfect one.  Acceptable being an A or close C.  I'm wondering if they are able to track the front sight so well, that they are able to take that second shot while the front sight is still in motion - just when it is on target.  Maybe I'm waiting too long for the sight to settle and I should try shooting while it's still in motion.

  10. I'm looking to improve the speed of my second shot returning to Point of Aim. One that's 80% or higher likely to get an A / Zero.

I'm trying to call my second shot quicker, but it's taking longer than I want for the sights to settle.

I know the simple answer to this is "grip harder" - but what else can be done to train and improve 2nd shot accuracy at speed?

Anything I need to improve with my grip technique?

  11. Event: 2016 West Coast IDPA Championship

    Date: 9/29/16-10/2/16

    Location: Sacramento, CA

    Conditions: 85* and sunny

Duration:  14 stages over 3 days, Chief Safety Officer for 2 days

Objective:  1st place SSP Expert and match bump to Master

What I did today and what I learned:  Broken down by stage:

    1. Get out of my way. I was 2nd of 13 SSP/EX on this stage. Shot around non-threats well and hit all steel 1-for-1. Need to improve transition speed and shot calling speed.
    2. Taken.  I was 3rd of 13 SSP/EX on this stage.  3 shots required on each target, I took 4 on each swinger and was Down 8. Need to practice on swingers.
    3. The Office. I was 1st of 13 SSP/EX on this stage. Several ways to shoot this stage and I had a good plan. Need to move more aggressively between positions.
    4. The Watch Company. I was 6th of 13 SSP/EX on this stage. Shot the pick-up revolver OK, but had a down 3. Hit a non-threat on the outer edge. Need to ensure calling shots near NTs.
    5. Camping at Folsom Lake.  I was 7th of 13 SSP/EX on this stage. Fast Swinger with NT attached. Dumped 3 fast rounds to be able to engage swinger at the end, and was down zero on it, but down 6 for the stage. Was in IDPA "bullseye" mode on this stage - need to call shots faster.
    6. Picnic in the Park.  I was 8th of 13 SSP/EX on this stage. Was down 1 on the disappearing target. Need to speed up shot calling. Hit the 2 poppers 1-for1 but should have shot the other steel first tot save a transition at the end.
    7. Walking the Dogs. I was 3rd of 13 SSP/EX on this stage. Had good cadence on the SHO targets. Shot fast on the dogs, but was not calling good shots and was down 8.
    8. Shoot & Scoot Standards. I was 7th of 13 SSP/EX on this stage.  Had good hits on the first two targets, but 2 mikes on the last. Need to practice more at 25 yards with speed.
    9. Short Order Cook.  I was 2nd of 13 SSP/EX on this stage.  Took 3 head-shots on the first target with NT, had 3 zeros. Can improve shot calling speed and speed on open targets.
    10. Drive-thru Holdup.  I was 12th of 13 SSP/EX on this stage. Tried to go as little faster than I should have SHO and was not using the reset on the trigger. Had 2 mikes.
    11. Dirty Laundry.  I was 3rd of 13 SSP/EX on this stage. Had to shoot a swinger with NT attached in tactical sequence while retreating. Need to shoot the opposite target first in this situation in the future so you can track the swinger only once.
    12. Break-in.  I was 4th of 13 SSP/EX on this stage.  Thought I shot this stage well until I received a PE for cover. Only down 2.
    13. Taking Care of Business.  I was 12th of 13 SSP/EX on this stage.  Was in IDPA "bullseye" mode on this stage.  Need to remember to watch swinger and find the fastest sequence to shoot it.
    14. Facebooked. I was 2nd of 13 SSP/EX on this stage. Had to reshoot this stage due to discrepancy over CoF description dispute. Did not do as well on the re-shoot and didn't have time to get shots on the disappearing target.

I am looking for a solution to:  Getting better on swingers - need to find a way to get practice on them. Need to improve shooting from retention - this shows up at Sanctioned matches. Need to continue to improve on SHO & WHO shooting and shot calling. Remembering not to get into IDPA "bullseye" mode and find the quickest way to shoot the stage.

What I did well today: Hit all steel 1-for-1. Had good stage plans except for one stage. Took 2nd place SSP Expert at a Tier-4 match.

Like where?  We have behind cover, in the open with no cover "available", in a hallway or in a room once threats therein have been engaged.

I wasn't told specifics, but I was told by someone important in IDPA. It was said right in front of Joyce and Robert, so I have no reason to believe it's not true.

Just last February we couldn't reload without having a foot planted on the ground. Things can change ?.

What's not to like?  Skirts the intent of SSP.  One DA round, then the rest are SA.

Don't see how that is "skirting" the intent of SSP, when the Rule Book specifically allows it.

For SA/DA guns, ESP has the advantage here - being able to use SA for the first shot. This comes into play heavily during Standards stages where each string SSP has to start hammer down, especially on SHO or WHO strings.  Also on difficult first targets, like small poppers or a clay target like we had on one stage at Nationals.

....this is why we can't have nice things, it amazes me that people have this type of attitude towards supporting the organization that bring so much to so many (maybe start you own sanctioning body, for people that only shoot two matches a year and are cheap @sses).

I guess when you grow up downloading music for free..... you struggle with any cost being associated with anything, what a shame.

    Bravo!

I heard it was kind of hot and humid..

People posted pics and videos of huge puddles and downpour a couple of days before. By Friday and Saturday it was dry and no rain, thankfully.

It was very hot and muggy. No breeze and you just continued to sweat, even in the shade.  I drank a ton of water as well.

  16. Joyce said the 1 point per second down is still going to happen in 2017, but the new Rule Book will probably not go into effect on 1/1/17.

Last 2 rule books took effect on 3/1/15 and 10/1/13.

There are other rumors floating around like more places to do reloads.

  17. Event:  2016 IDPA National Championship

    Date:  9/16 & 9/17

    Location:  Cresson, TX

    Conditions:  90* and very humid

    Duration:  11 Stages day 1, 6 Stages day 2

Objective:  Have a good performance on all Stages

What I did today and what I learned:  Broken down by Stage:

    1. Limited 7-yard Bill Drill with 1 shot to the head. Shot it in 2.62 seconds but was down 2. Fastest overall time was 2.27 so my time was decent.
    2. Collapsed Mine.  I placed 2nd of 31 SSP/EX on this stage. Used my flashlight and executed my plan correctly.
    3. Stagecoach.  I placed 2nd of 31 SSP/EX on this stage. 3 shots required on each target. I called all my shots and took extras on the partials.
    4. Kneeling Standards.  Shot WHO string well. Did not rush the shots. Need to improve on remembering SHO.
    5. In the saddle.  I placed 7th of 31 SSP/EX on this stage. Executed my plan correctly. 1-for-1 on the steel targets. Need to improve on tracking swingers.
    6. Poker table & pick-up gun.  I placed 4th overall and 1st of 31 SSP/EX on this stage.  Shot the pick-up gun quickly and without issues. Was down zero on all targets shot with my gun.
    7. Gold rush.  I placed 13th of 31 SSP/EX on this stage. Stand & draw, shots on the move and speed was good. Need to wear darker glasses when facing the sun as it effected accuracy.
    8. Outhouse.  Speed was good.  Need to ensure calling last shot before movement. Other wise accuracy was good on this stage.
    9. Limited Stripes. I placed 8th of 31 SSP/EX on this stage.  WHO shots were all down 0 except for shot #2 which hit hard-cover. SHO shots were all down 0 exept for a down 1. 25-yard FS shots were all down 0 except for one that hit hard-cover.  Can probably increase speed on less than 10-yard shots.
    10. Udder Chaos.  Hit a NT on the previous stage, so tried for better accuracy on this one. Threw extra shots on farther targets. Hit the clay targets 1-for-1 and the first on the double-action pull. Last target was 25-yard head-shot and partial -3/-1 only. Threw 4 shots at it and got 3 in the down 0 and 1 in the down 1.  The SO said Only 6 people zero'd that target.
    11. Big Rocks.  Shot the first 6 targets with good speed and accuracy. Need to improve on taking all stages seriously and calling all shots. Hit one NT on this stage that was easy to avoid. SO wrote down 2 HNT. Need to verify SO score every time.
    12. Ladder Stage.  I placed 2nd of 31 SSP/EX on this stage.  Got up the ladder quickly. Made up shot that did not touch the perf.
    13. Table Flip.  I placed 8th of 31 SSP/EX on this stage.  Shot targets on the move well. Need to improve on seating the mag hard to release the slide and tracking moving targets.
    14. Wrong Barn.  Shot on the move targets well.  Need to improve on tracking swingers, and continuing to focus when something goes wrong in a Stage.
    15. Moving Horse.  I placed 10th of 31 SSP/EX on this stage. Was down 0 on the moving target. Need to remember to take static targets before the mover if possible.
    16. Shooting Gallery.  Avoided hitting the moving NT.  Need to tighten mag pouches more so mags don't accidentally come out, and improve focus when something goes wrong in a Stage.
    17. Walternate's House.  I placed 6th of 31 SSP/EX on this stage.  Could have shot this Stage faster.  Need to improve on swingers.

I am looking for a solution to:  Getting more practice time with swingers.

What I did well today:  Placed 7th out of 31 SSP/EX shooters at my first National Championship.  1-for-1 on all steel and clay targets.  Placed 4th overall on Stage 6, only being beaten by Vogel, Seeklander and Norris.
