  1. IDPA is a sport based on concealed carry and defensive shooting. Concealed carry is basic principle, so no - it is never going away.

If you want to game - wear a vest. They provide several advantages.

If you want to shoot what you carry and wear, then do so. Many shooters do.

  2. Looking for a good captured steel guide rod for a Gen3 Glock 19, so I can put in a 15lb ISMI spring. Looks like several companies make one: Jager, Glockmeister, Lone Wolf, rockyourglock etc.

Is there one that is better quality than the rest?

  3. So if the "cover call" aspect of IDPA was simply removed and replaced with shooting boxes, wouldn't it likely result in a more enjoyable sport and make it easier to have fun (for both the competitors and RO/s)?

    How would you do it?

Sometimes there are several positions of cover from P1, as cover changes after each target is engaged.

  4. As to how cover will be called on a stage, it is the SO's job to tell you so don't hesitate to ask if it has not been communicated in a way that you know what is expected. Yes, it is also your job to have read and understand the rulebook but it's the SO's job to point out the points of cover and to assist you through the COF. Here are 2 clips from the rulebook that would apply.

3.3 Prior to shooting a stage, a group walkthrough will be given by the SO. During the group walkthrough the SO will verbally indicate to all shooters the vision barriers and points of cover for each target and the criteria that will be used in assessing the shooter's use of cover during the stage

3.7 It is my duty to assist, to the best of my ability, all shooters and not to hinder them through harassment or authoritarian behavior.

Thank you for posting this. Excellent.

  5. I'd be quite interested in seeing the earlier versions of the rule book as it pertains to these duties. The rule book that I use doesn't mention "ASOs".

"2.6.1 The Primary Safety Officer (PSO ) is responsible for preparing and running the shooter through the CoF in accordance with IDPA rules while monitoring the shoot's progress through the CoF and noting any infractions of IDPA rules."

    and...

"2.6.4.2 Working in conjunction with the Scorekeeper SO to observe and levy any penalties incurred by the shooter during the CoF."

The rule book also mentions the duties of the Scorekeeper SO (SSO)...

"2.7.1.2.1 Observe the shooter’s execution of the CoF for safety, procedural, and cover violations"

The current rule book seems clear that both the PSO and the SSO are responsible for making rules/cover calls. I'll agree that on many stages the SO on the timer is frequently not in the best position to make cover calls, but that's not always the case. At the 'Bama state match last year, one stage had the shooter moving down a narrow hallway. The PSO had to make the cover calls since there simply wasn't room for another SO in the same hall.

C'mon Bill. you know what we meant by ASO. So sorry I didn't get the acronym right.

You also forgot these about the Primary SO:

2.6.1 The Primary Safety Officer (PSO ) is responsible for preparing and running the shooter through the CoF in accordance with IDPA rules while monitoring the shoot's progress through the CoF and noting any infractions of IDPA rules. Primary SOs specific responsibilities include:

2.6.2 Maintaining a clear focus on the particular shooter the SO is assigned to observe, as follows:

2.6.2.1 Not permitting his or her attention to be misdirected or lax.

2.6.2.2 Observing the shooter during the CoF from a vantage point where the SO can clearly view each of the shooter's actions and react appropriately by the following means:

2.6.2.2.1 Observe the firing hand and firearm.

And the Rule Book specifically says the Scorekeeper to watch for cover violations, as you mentioned in 2.7.1.2.1

Can the PSO call cover? Yes

Are there situations where the PSO has a better view? Yes

In general, should the PSO call cover? No

In general, should the Scorekeeper call cover? Yes

  6. 2 things that bug me about SO's calling cover incorrectly. One when they are not in a position to see or to call cover, like standing beside you and clearly cannot tell whether you broke cover or not.

Also, the SO running the timer should not be calling cover, they should be watching the gun. ASOs should be watching for cover and other violations.

  7. There are some SOs that still call cover by the old rule book - calling it from the outside edge of the target. A few shooters and I noticed this at a recent sanctioned match. We lined up with the center of the -0 and the edge of the wall, and watched as the SO gave cover calls to shooters who were clearly not breaking cover. We confronted him on this.

Make sure they know cover is supposed to be called from the center of the -0 to infinity.

  8. How do the quickest shooters transition to targets while using cover?

Say you have a wall (P1) and slice the pie to shoot T1, T2 and T3 - which are 2 yards apart from each other.

Do the top guys (Vogel, Nils etc.) stay in one spot and increase their lean, or do they step with each new target?

  9. I've got 2 SP-01s with the CZ competition rear sight. Both of them have worked themselves loose in the rear dovetail recently. Neither of the sights were filed on to fit them when they were installed.

I have had this happen several times, and here is what finally fixed it for me:

    * Mark where the sight is zeroed (I took pictures and used the lines on the top of the slide vs the sight as a reference)

    * Tap out the sight

    * Clean the sight and dovetail with acetone, then rubbing alcohol (get any old loctite out, heat first if necessary)

    * Take a hammer and punch and create small dings on the sight where it makes contact with the dovetail (not the gap)

    * Put green loctite 609 in the dovetail and tap the sight back in to zero

    * Put more green loctite in the set-screw hole to fill up the gap in the dovetail (not higher than where the set-screw threads start at the bottom)

    * Let loctite set for 24 hours

    * Put blue loctite on the set-screw threads and put the screw in

    * Let loctite set for 24 hours

Note that a heat-gun might be needed to remove the rear sight in the future.

  10. That's what the rule book says. Would be nice to see it in practice :roflol:

Shooters should know the Rule Book and not be afraid to speak up. Be polite but firm.

At a Tier-3 match, I saw an SO walk closer to a target and he took a few seconds to look at a hit that was very close to a -0. The shooter said "If you have to take this long to look, you have to give me the benefit of the doubt." The SO immediately agreed and the shooter got the better score.

  11. All of this is 'subjective opinion'. How do you accurately measure an oversized hole to determine if it is over twice bullet diameter.... the difference with a .356 plated 9mm bullet between .71 (legal) and .72 (not legal)? And, if you take the target presentation into consideration regarding hole diameter... or elongation... where in the Rule Book does it say to do that?

You don't. If the SO has to take more than 3 seconds to verify - the benefit of the doubt goes to the shooter.

  12. Do you use it? Yes
Do you think it is necessary? No
Pros? No setback, passes case gauge easier
Cons? Powder die may stick while expanding the case mouth, slightly harder pull
Does it over work brass? No

  13. The Cajun Gun Works EZ/D is a .125 wide notch also. It is deeper but not any wider. I hate the big chunky serrations on the EZ/D. They draw my eye to them and I see them as horizontal lines.

The .140 deep makes a big difference. I have both.

  14. Does anyone besides CZC make a competition rear sight for the Shadow?

I want one with a bigger notch. The CZC Comp is .125 wide and .096 deep which is too small - even with a .095w front.

I asked Dawson Precision if they would make one, seeing how the Shadow is so popular. They said no and referred me to Cajun Gun Works. I contacted CGW and they said no as well.

I like the new EZ/D that Dawson makes for CGW, but it is only for the SP-01.
