  1. Some great tips; I'm taking a couple of these to the range this weekend. Thanks guys.
  2. Thanks for the help guys. I haven't had any experience with Tripp Mags... are they pretty good value for the money?
  3. YIKES!! As someone new to competition shooting that is something I've wondered about on those race style holsters. Is that an auto DQ?
  4. What mags do you guys like for your 1911 SS's? And what kind of pouches? I have several ACT mags and they seem pretty good. I'm shooting a 45 and am looking for a few more 8 round mags. I have enough for me but have been working on dragging my dad along and he only has a couple (he also has a 1911 in 45). I was thinking I'd pick up a few more for me to have and I could lend some to him while he dips his toe in. Thanks guys.
  5. That reminds me of a line from Big Trouble in Little China Town. "I don't drive any faster than I can see..."
  6. I did the same thing this past weekend. I shoot single stack and it was only one mag. I grabbed it and started to slap it in when I noticed it was empty. Fortunately I was able to drop it and grab the next one which was loaded. But you are all right, of course, empty mags should not go into the pouch. One lesson learned for me. Of course I still have a million more to learn.
  7. Welcome to the addiction. I'm new also and would also say shoot what you have and what you are comfortable with. I've been shooting single stack because that's what I have (and because 1911's are awesome). Have fun and be safe.
  8. Thanks for the advice. I have always liked HK's. Of course I really like the sig as well. I bought the sig for CCW but its pretty heavy. I never really carry it. I'm sure I wouldn't carry the HK either. I'm thinking I may just pass on it. But thanks again for weighing in.
  9. We had a stage this past weekend where you had to shoot through low port. I thought it was fun. It was a new challenge for me. I even got a bit of rug burn on my elbow diving into it.
  10. I've got to admit that looks pretty sweet. I've never shot a Tanfoglio before so I'm not trying to knock it. For me its like CZ; I know they have their followers but I'm just not sold yet. I was thinking STI's Perfect 10. I've always been a fan of the 10MM. Bought a Perfect 10 a while back thinking it would be the end all be all, but I haven't gotten used to the wide body yet. And that long black barrel would look awesome as during the smiting.
  11. Ammo is still pretty hit and miss around me (NE KS). Sometimes they have 45, they usually have 40 and 9. Limit three boxes per customer. Still frustrating. I haven't gotten into reloading yet so I rely on getting it off the shelf.
  12. RE the archangel Michael: 10mm yes... but Tanfoglio?
  13. My bet is nothing is going to "feel" quite as nice as your 1911. Anyway that's how I feel. But the 2011 is as close to it as anything else will be. But you can get used to most anything if you put in the practice. I'd be Interested in an update. What did you choose? How is it working out for you? Thanks.
  14. OP, it sounds like you were really looking forward to this gun. Sorry to hear that it let you down. I have experienced similar disappointments myself. And for me, at least once, it was more me than the gun. It was one of those "you should never meet your heroes" moments. Hope everything works out.
  15. I have a sig 229 in 40 and saw an ad recently where a guy wants to trade his HK USP 45 for a 40 cal 229. Was thinking of trading but I only have the one 40 cal. What do you guys think?
  16. I had hoped to shoot the Taurus at this weekends match but hadn't managed to find time to get to the range with it so I didn't. But I did take it out after the match and run a dozen rounds through it. Nice trigger and no malfunctions but I felt like it was hitting low. Will have to spend more time with it. Will keep you updated.
  17. I know EXACTLY what you mean. I bought a 2011 thinking that I would just love it. I thought its the perfect combination between the 1911 and a high cap pistol. Well, its ok, but I don't love it. Not like I love my 1911.
  18. I would agree that "best case" you would train with the same gun you carry. However, the best gun in a fight is the gun you have on you. What I mean by that is that if you are going to carry then you should commit to carrying all the time. I find that I rarely carry my Commander, although that's why I bought it. I almost never carry my sig 229 although that's why I bought it. But I always carry my Kel-Tec Pf9. Its small, it doesn't weigh very much, and I always have it. Better to have the wrong gun than to not have the right gun. Just my two cents.
  19. I don't think anyone is talking about just turning a kid loose at age 5. Close supervision is paramount. I had my 4 year old shooting our 22 rifle the other day. But in truth I was holding the gun, helping him aim it, keeping it pointed at the target at all times, and I even helped him press the trigger. I def did not give him the gun.
  20. ok that makes since. Thanks guys. The more I think I know the more complicated it all is.
  21. Can a stock (three dot style) rear site be swtiched out for bomar style?
  22. on the USPSA rules website http://www.uspsa.org/document_library/2010HandgunRulesProof3web.pdf under Appendix D5 Single Stack Division Rules #9 it says "Maximum Ammunition Capacity: Yes, maximum rounds loaded in any magazine after the start signal -Major Power Factor - 8 rounds -Minor Power Factor - 10 rounds. I take that to mean that even if it fits in the box you can still only have 8 round mags on 40 or 45, and 10 round mags in 9. Am I wrong about that?
  23. I would assume the mag release extension would be legal on the 1911 for SS. I don't see many guys using them for it tho so maybe not. Grapemeister thanks for the great advice. I must have misunderstood some of the suggestions that I got at the match. I had understood the guys to be telling me that I shouldn't be shifting my grip. But based on your comments and looking back at what was actually said maybe they were just saying be careful of shifting your grip so much and be careful of the gun etc. One comment was that I might drop the gun. And thanks for the link. Great vid.
