There is a lot of misconceptions about NRR ratings in this thread.  All manufacturers specify a single value for the NRR, e.g. 18dB for the MSA Sordins compared to 30dB for the Howard Leights.  The Sordins cost nearly 10x more, so what's the difference?

The answer is that NRRs must be calculated across the entire scale of audible frequencies. Gunshots typically have a frequency of 2000 (pistol shots) - 6000 Hz (magnum rifles). The true NRR scale can be found if you dig deep into the product literature and looks something like this:

    MSA Sordins

    HL Impact Sport

We see that for pistol shooting (~2000 Hz) Sordins actually have an NRR of 29.5 where HLs come in at 27.1. And then recall that decibels are measured on a logarithmic scale, so that difference between 27.1 and 29.5 is actually quite large.

Don't be fooled by silly marketing. MSA offers SIGNIFICANTLY more hearing protection than a pair of HLs.

If you really want to get into the weeds of this type of analysis, here's an in depth blog post to start: https://trevoronthetrigger.wordpress.com/2014/05/01/msa-sordin-supreme-performance-the-misleading-nrr18db-rating/

I'm on my second and last pair of Sordin supremes. What my ears tell me is that they do the worst job of noise reduction of any ear muff I've ever owned (including $20 Walmart non amplified), also the gel ear pads do not last very long and the electronics on my first pair lasted maybe 4 years max.

Based on my own hearing impressions in the field (ok shoot - now let me switch back to these others - ok shoot) , they are just not a good choice if you need something for indoors or for being around the really loud guns. For shooting 9mm pistols outdoors and similar I think they are ok. As others have noted, double plugging is a great way to go but this can be more practical for the shooter than for the r.o., also my current Sordins clamp voice amplification at something like 82  d.b. (memory) so they are not great at boosting low volume voices to compensate for the plugs.

I think they created their own NRR rating because they look bad when compared to the better hearing protection, which my ears tell me is the case.

And just exactly why is it a good goal to emulate and get in line with the IPSC rulebook?

A complete divorce, and the resultant cost savings to USPSA always made sense to me. For the 1% or whatever that choose to participate in both sports they would be out a duplicate membership fee but I do not know of any other downside.

It seems more sensible to me to have to switch back and forth between uspsa and ipsc rather than switch back and forth between california and the rest of the western states.

Seems like there is also a not insignificant number of folks who shoot on both sides of the US-Canada border.

  4. " Stock I has a cylindric barrel,113 mm long, that can get excellent results also using coated tender ammunition bullets."

Can anybody out there translate Tanfo add type to English? I'm assuming both the Stock 1's and limited pros will be traditional button rifled barrels? Not sure why they would feel a need to mention coated bullets, some Tanfo's can't shoot coated lead like bayou & sns & etc. ?

Maks - Watching this video again, don't know if I've ever seen a flatter shooting gun.

Will be very interesting to see some independent comparison testing. Some shooters can make major power factor 40's & 45's appear to be extremely flat shooting  so the video I'm taking with a grain of salt for now.

But they are screwing with it.  Largely, it appears to me, because "too many" people have been "hooking up" on the peak performance/hero-or-zero runs.

Since they're screwing with it, I would prefer to see them move to a better system that doesn't require judgment-based handicapping of HHF's.  See

for my suggestion of a percentile-based system.

No debate. Not sure that the hero runs hurt anybody except the person that chooses to over classify.

If somebody has A class field course skills but wants to compete against folks with M and GM class skills (for example) at matches I do not see the harm to anyone else.

Now if there was a cure for sandbagging, and I only know 1 person that deliberately abuses the system that way, I would think it would be good for the sport as a whole.

(And I haven't read the other thread yet)

The organization is forced to try to set a HHF that will either appropriately measure peak-performance/high-risk runs, or will appropriately measure "match-mode" runs.

Really not. Find what works to get a fair spread of people in the classifications  according to skill level & then don't screw with it. Like handicapping is used in every other sport I can think of.

And by "take some material" I just made mine a little shinier and it did the trick. Very little had to come off for my Gen 2 trigger bar.

Anything that close and I will stick the gun in a freezer for a couple hours and make sure it works cold. May not be an issue here or for shooting conditions where you live but sometimes it can be a thing.

Going a step further, as someone alluded to earlier in the thread, what exactly does classification even signify?

I'd peel off one more layer. What is the purpose of a classification?

In the rest of the world it is to make competition the most fun for the greatest majority of participants by giving people a chance for friendly competition against other people of similar abilities.

    What am I missing?

Therin lies the rub for many of us.

It would be nice to know. Worthwhile considering the cost of the rest & other issues, I do not know, but nice.

Have toyed with the idea of buying the rest & offering it as a rental tool to try & recoup some of the investment.

Don't we vote on the BOD and the Prez for just that reason? Most people wont even know anything changed.

I think we vote on people who we think will do the business needed to keep things running smoothly, and we vote on people who advertise changes they want when they are asking for votes.

Beyond that, huge changes out of nowhere are always going to create unnecessary angst & not necessarily suit the best interests of the majority of the membership. It is not at all hard to advertise what changes you are considering, communicate the pro's and cons, and give the members a chance to weigh in and feel like their interests matter. As a side benefit it would add an interesting page or two to the USPSA publications which sometimes seem in need of more content.

Ben Stoeger claims that he has never been DQed, for what it’s worth. I believe he talked about it on an episode of his podcast.

    I wondered about him actually.

He also said that he made master at his first IDPA match & GM on his first USPSA classification card (SKILLS & DRILLS , book intro page vii). Interesting individual.
