  1. I have a business meeting near my new home-to-be location in Alabama in a couple weeks. My wife is going to come down with me (both Canadian citizens, travelling from Canada, waiting for my work permits to be finalized in a month or so). She may borrow and shoot in a competition locally when down there. She has a Form6, with components, etc. approved to import (5000 rounds 9mm, 5000 rounds 38SC, and reloading components states on the approved Form6). I don't think we will have an issue bringing 8lbs of powder, primers, and 38SC brass, will we? Not going to be bringing any of it back (and out of the US), and would state "reloading ammo with those components to use in the US with none returning when we travel back to Canada" at border. I don't foresee any issues but do not want to create any problems.
  2. Anyone have the STI/SVI and Tanfoglio hole locational dimensions? Namely the programmable distance from center from hole to hole? I will contact the mfr's directly but thought I'd throw out the question here firstly. Rob
  3. I basically have 3 issues: 1) Process and timing by which to be ABLE to possess/own firearms while working in Alabama under LIA work permit (wife will be under another permit as she's in the medical field). ie, license? State application? Need to show residence for 3 months, etc. 2) Process to bring in pistols from Canada (my SV's and all non Chinese made) legally. Export them while in Canada to US via FFL/Dealer?, Bring them down under Form 6 then apply? ETC. 3) The above proving correct, ability (legal as a non-citizen but all else legal) to shoot on own property (say I buy 10 acres and create a back burm to set up steel rack, etc.)? As you can see, these are very important to us. A few folks are saying why let shooting competitively get in the way of my career......while I tend to think I really don't want my career advancement to get in the way of our shooting, more or less.....
  4. Well, to pick up from the other post, things are changing and looks like Alabama will be the offer. So will amend the other post and ask the same of Alabama. I will be working toward my permanent residency, but want to bring our guns and not miss too much of a step competing wise. So, same "post"......... Well, my walking papers are coming. A good thing business wise, but creates a whole list of new questions and things to look into. Getting my wife's and my SVI's down to Alabama under work permits, may be a challenge. So a couple quick questions for those of you in the know...... What would be the good clubs to look at near Athens/Huntsville? USPSA/IPSC matches and training only (pistols) really what we are into. Anyone have a good source on firearm import (and subsequent use, travel, and ownership) of non-citizens under valid work permits (moving to permanent residency in the future)? Looks like we may be here for the remainder of career. What are the laws for non-citizens (no green cards yet)? Possibility of range on property (what are the requirements, limits, etc.)? Appreciate any help.....and I do mean this as you all have been very helpful in the last post. In Orlando right now on a flight delay coming back from the Florida Open (wife and I shot open division for the first time/heck of it, and as we are restricted to 10 rounds in Canada, had a great time w 28 round big sticks!) Rob
  5. Well, heading back from the Florida Open now. Wife and I shot Open for the first time and first for using hi caps as well....this could be addicting. While scoping the stages on Friday, received a call if I would consider NE Alabama area to make my main office (great company that is trying to accommodate our competitive passions). Maybe I need to create a new post asking the same question on Alabama now....I don't think I'll be able to sleep again with this whirlwind of life impacting changes......
  6. Alright, when time permitted, ran a few logistics calculations. Let's say I choose to spend 45mins to an hour in the car to commute to Rosemont, living in St John, Munster, etc-ville, Indiana (NW). I have a luxury now of having free reign of a range for 3 hours each Thursday, and shoot club matches on Friday. There are 1 or 2 IPSC matches each weekend from 30 mins drive to 1 hour drive from my home. I know this is a tedious question, but would I be able to reasonably live fire practice (holster, movement drills, etc) within NW Indiana? I am trying to search via USPSA etc., and do see an odd "shoot 3rd Sunday every month", but am wondering if I am being reasonable in my search. I put 20K rounds out last year, and would like to do the same over the next few years (I'm a tad too old to spend 3 years waiting for my permanent residency cards before I can live closer to my HQ)? I do appreciate the response(s) and apologize in advance for the specific questions.......I just need to know before I make the final decision.
  7. Thanks DVC, That is actually the type of information I am looking for. My wife immediately said, "well I'm not going if I can't shoot for 3 years!"..........<I'd like to add an lol here if it was a joke>. Whom or which department would you recommend I speak with? I am an executive with a company whose corporate office is based in the Chicago area, hence the need to move me closer to that locale. I would have to stick 3 SV's in a vault...and couldn't see me doing that. Wisconsin "may" be possible but the commute to O'Hare area would be a tad long. Simply put, we won't wait for 3 years to compete again as its become a very important part of our lives. Heck, the only way I can get my wife to Europe is through shooting the Euro Extreme match so its now become a welcome competitive fixture. Just need to get the real actual low down from those whom have gone through the process. What about Ohio, Michigan, or Texas? I really do appreciate all the responses above.......feel a little down now......
  8. Well, my walking papers are coming. A good thing business wise, but creates a whole list of new questions and things to look into. Getting my wife's and my SVI's down to Illinois, under work permits, may be a challenge. So a couple quick questions for those of you in the know...... What would be the good clubs to look at nearer the O'Hare area? I need to be reasonably placed to be 1/2 hr commute-wise to Rosemont if that is an indicator. USPSA/IPSC matches and training only (pistols) really what we are into. Anyone have a good source on firearm import (and subsequent use, travel, and ownership) of non-citizens under valid work permits (moving to permanent residency in the future)? Looks like we may be here for the remainder of career (well, Texas eventually). Appreciate any help.....
  9. Terry, where did you see the update version (2015)??
  10. I am one of those Classic shooters that likes to invest in pretty 1911's. That being said, I will certainly have to curtail the habit should the Classic IPSC division not be renewed (or actually extended) as I am a user vs. collector. When would this be done? Likelihood? I know this is an open question that is sure to result in speculation, but some formal process or information thereto is appreciated. Rob
  11. I have an extra Dawson Precision ICE No Gap 1911 magwell. I shoot IPSC in Canada, and am thinking about machining 5mm off of it to meet the 35mm wide magwell requirement. I know the insert would need to be altered, etc.......but just wondering if anyone has attempted this and what their result were (before I carve up a new ICE)......??
  12. IPSC yes, IDPA no. If I travel south (don't shoot USPSA Production typically) will move to a DAA or Bladetech full slide covering holster.
  13. I have used nearly every recent holster there is. I received the One a few weeks ago, and used it at an IPSC LVL 3 as well as a couple level 1's. I ran it with a single stack, and have tried it with my SV. I have since purchased 2 more for use with my dedicated double stack and production rigs. Best of both worlds in my opinion (I will never run a holster without barrel/pin support again).

    Magwell

I have used S&A, Techwell XT, SV, STI. I keep going back to the SV. I really wanted to like the S&A, but the entry angle of the SV was better for me. I have SV's installed on 4 competition SS's, and even my house pistol.......
  15. Yes, some US companies (SV, SSI, etc) do have and do ship to Canada......just finding one that has them in stock for the Brazos sight is proving futile...
  16. Awww..........come on............some one give me a bread crumb.....
  17. Thanks Al, It actually does do that fine. I get deep primer hits on 90% of the time. I am using CCI's and Winchesters and the flaw is indiscriminite....the mark left on the primer is VERY minute........like a tiny pit mark
  18. Tried to clean/polish the Limcat tonight.......shot mini match.........very light strikes 3 out of 30 rounds........... Dropping in the original STI for a course tomorrow...............fingers crossed. I am thinking its a hammer slow down (ie......trigger bow hanging on sear?)........
  19. My SV bent. I do not think the primers are the issue. I can run the stock FP and have no issues, and shouldn't with the 19lb MS. I am wondering if there is something I am missing in terms of the FP Spring for the Limcat....
  20. Was running an SV extended firing pin in my STI single stack (custom made forged frame) that is in 40. Had a bent firing pin after a match..........hmm, may be I need to tweak the firing pin chamber (was told this) to match the pin? Anyway, dropped in an STI FP and all was fine. Like the insurance of a longer FP, so ordered up some Limcat XL's. Dropped one in tonight with an STI FP spring and off to the range I went for drill night. Had no less than 5 light strikes! I am running with a 19lb MS, and my loads use CCI 500's. I can see the dimple on 3 loads, the other 2 just failed to fire at all. Do I need to alter the FP spring? Any thought or experiences that may be similar?
  21. I used one for the first time at a match last weekend. For a single stack application. Jury is still out. I find in order to have the draw smooth, I have to open up the "screws" to the point where any out of ordinary (say walking through a stage) movement may have the pistol pop out. I am still at the trial and error stage, and have yet to find the perfect positioning giving me a smooth draw and retention confidence. Its a nice system, don't get me wrong, it may just need a little wear in and fine tuning to suit.
  22. Well, SSI is out of stock, and Brazo or 1911 does not ship to Canada.........so was wondering if anyone could ship me a couple or point me in the right direction. Need for STI slides...........
