  1. From your target I wouldn't call that zeroed at 100 yards. Shoot at least five to ten shots to determine where you are hitting at 100 yards.

That was my best group out of the several I shot. When I am consistently that close to the center, especially at 100 yards, I usually call it good. I've driven myself nuts trying to get a group perfectly placed on the target, chasing it around with 1/2MOA clicks. The rifle is clearly more accurate than I am, trying to get it any better is limited by my shooting ability. Frankly I was amazed it grouped so well, as 2MOA is typical with a chrome lined barrel and standard 55 grain FMJ as opposed to 3/4MOA.

I use a 100 yard zero with this rifle as that's what the BDC turrets are made to work with. I pull the target in closer to minimize my human error and see if the bullet is as low as it's supposed to be and centered, and it is. I'm fairly certain the 1/2" low and to the right at 100 is more me than a bad zero.

Where you holding center of mass on the target?

Yes, with a 100 yard zero 150 is the re intersect point

  2. If you are sighted at 100 yards and shooting at 150 yards, the issue could have been parallax related. Where you getting your eye centered behind the scope, or was there some pupil offset occlusion going on?

Possibly, but I don't think I was off center by much. It is possible my corrective lenses weren't as centered in front of my eyes as they should have been, I have heard this can cause similar problems too.

  3. Russ, free float handguards? If not, maybe you were torquing the bbl somewhat when you were shooting at the PRT. I have found similar reasons after the fact when something didn't add up about the POI of a known zeroed rifle.

Yes, the barrel is free floated.

I posted this same question on another forum, and their conclusion was mirage combined with my vision problems is likely the cause. I need to read up on dealing with mirage. If all else fails I can use the old fire and adjust method of shooting with the mil marks in my scope

  4. I went shooting with a firearms instructor I know yesterday to practice some 100+ yards rifle shooting. We had an MGM Precision rifle target at somewhere around 150-175 yards. I was having a hard time hitting the center flag open, observing my impacts through my scope and the instructor observing through the spotting scope, my groups were consistently 3-4" high and 3-4" to the right. I thought for sure my zero was off, as The instructor wasn't having much trouble hitting it consistently, and trying the rifle he was using I had more consistent hits at range.

So I went to the range this morning to reconfirm zeros on both my rifles. My 20" has a 3-9X MKIV MRT TMR on it sighted in at 100 yards, and my 16" has a Leupold CQT sighted in at 50. I check both their zeros today and both were still on. I didn't have trouble hitting the steel plates out to 300 this time. The only difference today was the lack of mirage from the heat, and less wind. At the range yesterday I definitely noticed more mirage though the 9X than the CQT on 3X. Can the quality of an individuals eyesight exaggerate the effect of mirage on shooting? My groups were consistent when I wasn't hitting the intended area, so I don't think it was a problem with bad technique. Suggestions, thoughts?

On another note, my 20" rifle is more accurate than I would expect it to be. With a chrome lined 1:9 twist barrel and factory cheap ammo here is my target from 100 yards today:

  5. This year my configuration is much different because I'm using a Saiga-12

How are you liking the Saiga? I was thinking about trying to get one without the pistol grip so the CA goonsquad doesn't take me off to jail.

I like it a lot...but I believe in CA detach mag fed shotguns are banned regardless.

  6. Please post the link to pictures.

    Did you shoot Trooper class?

Yes, I am one of two people responsible for creating it...so I've shot it at every match it was available since the fall of 2004.

here's the best front view pic I have it was taken at a local match before the ironman, I'm on the right.

    Pics from last year:

This year my configuration is much different because I'm using a Saiga-12

  7. Can you have more than one AR and switch between stages?

Can you have a back-up gun if one fails?

Unless you're in Trooper and carrying it with you, you have to use the same configuration for the whole match...unless the gun breaks, then you can petition the MD to switch if it is equal or lesser equipment than what you were using.

If I go with iron sights on the rifle to make the shotgun "open" (It will take we 10 minutes just to shove that many rounds in my shotgun) what's my toughest rifle shot? (Or is this just nuts?)

Others have debated doing this...haven't seen anyone do it yet.

Will a glock 9mm be as competitive as the 40? (I actually shoot it better)

I've used 9mm the past 2 years without issues.

Any recommendations on gear to hold all those shells, rifle mags and pistol mags at the same time?

I use a two tiered system

Line 1: pistol belt with suspenders and drop leg rigs, safariland holster, pistol mag pouches, rifle mags, dump pouch. Organizer for lens wipes, batteries, etc.

Line 2: Vest with camelback carrier for the bulk of the ammo.

I can post links to pics if you want them.

  8. Have the ability to carry enough ammo on you + some more, you will need it.

In the past each stage has had

    40-80 rifle (minimum)

    40-80 pistol (minimum)

30-60 shot shells (including bird, slug, and buck)

Some stages have tables you can stage ammo on, but you will need to be able to carry it all on you. You can have friends run ammo to you in all the divisions except for trooper, but this will slow you down.

  9. My first EVER reloads with a Saiga were 1/4 the time of loading 9 in my tactical gun. I might shoot a Saiga if it did not pound my wimpy ass so thoroughly.... Anyone who thinks a Benelli has recoil just pick up one of these puppies. :o

    Yes, I do realize I am a wussie. :)

Thank you for sharing this very important (painful) info.

I'll stick with my Remington 1100. It does not hurt to enjoy. :)

I don't think my Saiga-12 recoils any worse than my Benelli.

  10. 232 Years ago, a bunch of civilians fought back against the troops of the legitimate government that were coming to seize their arms. They were willing to fight and die as free men, rather than to be disarmed.

April 19th, 1775 is when the American Revolution began.

    Minute_Man.JPG

By the rude bridge that arched the flood,

    Their flag to April's breeze unfurled;

    Here once the embattled farmers stood;

And fired the shot heard round the world.

    The foe long since in silence slept;

    Alike the conqueror silent sleeps,

And Time the ruined bridge has swept

Down the dark stream that seaward creeps.

On this green bank, by this soft stream,

We place with joy a votive stone,

That memory may their deeds redeem,

When, like our sires, our sons are gone.

O Thou who made those heroes dare

To die, and leave their children free, --

Bid Time and Nature gently spare

The shaft we raised to them and Thee.

  11. In a similar vein, maybe we can get all these OEF and OIF vets into comps and vote pro gun.

We're seeing a lot of vets returning home buying AR15s of all kinds because they want something like their service rifles. In turn this gets their family members interested and it spreads from there.

  12. Eventually that's were we'll all go, unless the political climate nueters them.

Unless of course, there are enough of them already in competition that the other side sees them as more sporting than the Eve-ell, black assault weapon looking things.

Kind of as 3 gun world / USPSA as a PAC, kind of.

But I don't think that it will really matter in the long run, they'll be on the chopping block soon enough.

The US government doesn't recognize high power, IPSC, IDPA, or 3 Gun as sporting purposes...they are "combat games utilizing military style firearms". See all the court cases regarding importation, making shotguns Destructive Devices, for the government's opinion on this. The government has felt this way since the GCA of 1968 was enacted.

This is a cultural battle though. The more people we have actively using military style firearms for constructive purposes, including competition, the better off we will be.

  13. It seems to be sold, specifically to act as a monopod.

And that's probably why you're even looking at it right?

    I think that's your answer..

I shoot open most of the time at matches that don't have Trooper so I can use my trooper gear (whatever I want)...I was wondering because I run and help run a couple matches throughout the year (non-USPSA) and unless it's something I feel strongly enough about to do different, I generally go by whatever the existing precedent is for rules.

For rifles, there seems to be little functional difference between an tac scope gun and an open gun most of the time. I'd eliminate tac-scope, but competitors (customers) expect to have seperate divisions.
