Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. I have learned in the last few years thst I enjoy idpa much more if I stay off of forums arguing about the rules. Just shoot and have fun.
  2. Or the obvious fix that seldom gets brought up. Put stock guns with no magwell in SSP (STOCK service pistol) and guns with mods in ESP. I just hope I don't have to go buy a new gun to be able to shoot SSP.
  3. I had a G21 years ago and I sold it b/c of the huge grip. I just couldn't reach the trigger or controls well. Accuracy suffered tremendously after reloads. I am now struggling trying to shoot cdp with a 1911 after many yrs of shooting glocks. Gave myself a year to try out a different platform. The further into the year that I get, the more I realize I will probably sell off the 1911s to set up with a G21 with a grip reduction or a G21Sf.
  4. From the OPs post, it was 9 shooters in one bay and 7 in the other. Sounds like you either had an inexperienced group of shooters, an inexperienced SO running things, or a combination of both. Also, how much talking went on? Socializing can slow things down. The more you shoot the classifier, the faster you will get through it.
  5. At the end of the day, anything stiffer than a regular shirt should serve the purpose. I wore a denim shirt with the sleeves cut off this weekend b/c I knew I would be sweating like crazy in the humidity and didn't want to have to wash one of my vests again. No problems; didn't even notice any difference between it and using one of my vests. Wouldn't for a major, but local it's better than washing and ironing. Another consideration I haven't seen here is what gun you are shooting. With bottom feeders, the pockets don't matter during a stage. I still use the khaki 511 vest I bought when I started in IDPA, for reasons already mentioned in this thread. Although I lost the velcro panels long ago. Getting a little ragged around the collar, but otherwise good to go. For revolver, you often have the potential to need to do a RWR. The 511 doesn't have a good pocket for that. When shooting revolver, I use an Eotac, which has big, open pockets as an option, or one of the custom vests that I have accumulated over the years. Think about this before buying a new vest. If I was looking for a vest, I would take a serious look at the Armadillos. As said, they are very nice.
  6. I will say fault lines would make things a lot easier, but does anyone have an idea about how to use them practically. Say you have a shooting position with 3 targets. Are you going to lay down 3 fault lines? What do you make them out of so you can step on each one as you work around the barrier? Do you limit the spacing of targets so that you only have one fault line per position. That's not someething I would like to see. Also, cover is not a finite spot for each shooter. It is height dependent. If you set the fault line for a person that is 5'4", then someone 6'2" will not be behind cover if they go to the line. If you set it for the person that is 6'2", then the short person can't see the target, or is at an extreme disadvantage. I've seen it often in uspsa and 3 gun where a fault line makes it easy for a tall person to engage targets and places a short person at a disadvantage b/c they have to get into an extreme lean to engage the target. Luckily our local uspsa MD is shorter than I am. Given the purpose of cover in IDPA, I just don't see how to implement fault lines across the board. Given some props/target placements they would work great. In other situations, fault lines just aren't practical. Having a finite marker would be great, but how do you achieve that? "
  7. I've been using Ready Tactical gear for 8 years. I still have the first G34 holster that I bought in '04. Got my 1911 rig not long after that. Can't beat it. I do have a orange set that I got from MasterTac so that I could have Auburn gear. He makes good stuff also.
  8. Does anyone see a situation where IDPA would force a club/range to allow a practice that they don't view as safe? One, a good many clubs would not allow IPDA at their ranges. Two, it would shift a measure of liability to IDPA. I don't think IDPA wants either one of these things. If safety is the responsibility of the local range and MD, which it is, then they have to have the ability to adjust safety measures to fit their needs. I expect that if this became a big enough issue, IDPA would have to take the stance of putting in a rule that would fit as many clubs as possible. The no muzzle high rule is not uncommon. Unfortunately, the litigious society that we live in forces us to constantly look at the worse case scenario.
  9. I have a couple of comptac holster. I have had to modify both of them. I have one for a 1911. The channel for the right side of the slide release was so tight that the gun would hang if not drawn perfectly. Any tilt to the front or back and it would not come out. Given the odd angles that you sometimes have to draw from this was unacceptable to me. I heated the holster and shaved the material around that channel, then buffed it back down smooth, being careful not to overheat the plastic. I was finally able to get it where the gun would draw smoothly.
  10. If you have Academy Sports in your area, the Monarch brand that they carry is softer to me than most. Have used it at sanctioned matches and it chronoed fine. Some hate monarch and won't use it b/c of misfires etc. Serbian I think. I have fired thousands of rounds of the stuff in different calibers and the only problem I have ever had was with the primers being to hard for a light trigger in a revolver. From that I expect their primers are on the hard side. No problems with autos.
  11. I carried a kahr pm9 for a good while in a belt holster in appendix position. Comfortable and convenient to draw, but I stopped b/c I couldn't get used to where the muzzle was pointed when I sat down.
  12. Well, word has finally gotten around that the Masters is not all about MA level shooters. Go figure. Just a fun and challenging match for all, with the added twist that you can get a really good score on some of the stages if you are willing to take the option of risky and difficult shots. Can separate the field at the top, but fun and competitive to shoot for everyone. We have the most shooters we have had registered to date this far out from the match. Looking forward to another fun and challenging match. The best time of year to be shooting in Alabama. Convenient location, literally 5 minutes from metro area Birmingham. Saturday, May 12th. Look it up on our website that I can't post . brocksgapidpa and then dot com. Jimmy Duke Brock's Gap IDPA Birmingham, AL.
  13. I am considering shooting ESP with a 1911. Shooting so poorly that I might as well do something different to have fun. Jimmy
  14. I have had both over the years and keep going back to the 17. I got rid of my first 34 to get money for a cdp gun b/c I didn't really see any difference in my shooting/scores between the two. I got another 34 last year, mostly b/c my son wanted to shoot one. I still feel more comfortable with the 17 after giving the 34 another try. I expect it is mostly about familiarity.
