What else do I need (Remington 700P & AR-15 -- both .223). Thanks, Mike
  2. The extent of my "cleaning" has historically been spray some Slick-50 1-lube down the bore, then run a Hoppes Bore-Snake with a couple drops of FP-10 through it. Makes the barrel LOOK clean. Then disassemble (mostly field-strip), clean out any & all goop (with paper-towels, q-tips, toothpics, etc) and relube as appropriate. I've recently purchased some "long guns" (Remington 700P in .223 / Armalite M15A4) and recently starting thinking about "copper fouling". What do I need as far as bore-guides, cleaning rods, brushes, patches, solvents -- and where do I get them. I want good-stuff, and I want to do this "right". Mike
  3. Umm. VX-III -- 12.6", MK4 -- 12.5" = .1" length difference VX-III -- 17oz, MK4 -- 22oz = 5oz weight difference VX III -- ER 3.6 (14x), MK4 -- ER 3.6 (14x) = same eye relief VX-III -- 70" @100, MK4 -- 75" (e) @100 = 5" adjustment difference VX-III -- 7.4' (14x), MK4 -- 7.6' (14x) = .2' FOV difference Mike
  4. What do you guys think of the Leupold Vari-X III 4.5-14x50mm LR (30mm) -- $629 for this rifle? Or the Leupold Mk 4, LR/T 4.5-14x50mm for $799? Seems like the "only" thing you gain with the "tactical" is target-knobs. Not sure how big a deal that is...? Mike
  5. Yeah, I sat down with the online order-form and started filling things in -- nearly $1K as well. Still haven't clicked the "submit this order".....yet. Mike
  6. There is a Leupold 10-20x40mm Compact for $360. Starting to get a little pricey and 20x doesn't sound like much compared to 40x, 60x, 80x, etc. Mike
  7. The Kowa 20-40x50mm, angled, grey, kit is $270. The Leupold Wind River, angled, 14-45x60mm, kit, is $330. I'm inclined to return my Burris 20-60x80mm ($260) and purchase one of the above. Which one? Mike
  8. I just wonder how a Burris 20-60x80mm compares to a Kowa 20-40x50mm.....? And then there's the Leupold 14-45x. I want to see .223 holes as far out as I possibly can.... Mike
  9. What about something like a Meade ETX90RA telescope? Sportsmans Guide has them for $320... 90mm objective. 50x & 139x eyepieces. Mike
  10. A friend of mine bought one. He's not happy with it -- very dim image. He's probably going to send it back. I bought a Burris 20-60x80mm for $260 from Cabela's. Much brighter than the Trekker, but feels "cheap". Long eye-relief isn't "long" at all. I noticed Sportsmans Guide has the same Burris (less the hard-case) for $197. Mike
  11. I'm a newbie, but I'd say stick with the Champion for now as well. I started with a Springfield Mil-Spec in .38 Super. Only scored "minor", but not a huge deal as a beginner. Then I found a Springfield "Loaded" stainless in .40 S&W for $499 and used "Limited 10" as an excuse to buy it. I've only shot a few matches, and I'm still near the bottom (I just try not to be dead-last) but I sure don't blame the equipment.
  12. Yep, get a Linksys cable / DSL wireless / wired router -- this is also your first-level firewall. Then use the native OS-X firewall. Agreed -- the more RAM the better. I'd say 512MB minimum. Make sure you're doing the Software Updates. Mike
  13. The first 250 - 300yds / meters is bermed. The last 100-125yds / meters is open. Mike
  14. I wonder why the CZ 527 doesn't get more press? The specs seem very nice... Mike
  15. I had that scope laying around. I'll put a "nice" scope on it once I figure out what a "nice" scope is. Mike
  16. Here's what I bought: Remington 700P in .223 Badger Ordnance 20MOA base Badger Ordnance 30mm rings Badger Ordnance 1" ring reducers Harris BRM-S bipod Pod-Loc Bushnell Scopechief 4-14x50 AO
  17. Figures! Right after I bought my 700P. I'd have loved a 24"-26" LTR. :-( Mike
  18. I've got 2 -- 15" iMac G4 & 2x1.25Ghz PowerMac G4. I also bought each of my grandmothers an eMac. Bought my mom an iMac & my sister an iMac. Highly recommended. Mike
  19. OK, I've gotten just about enough grief for not reloading / handloading. I want to reload .38 Super, .40 S&W and .223. If I were to start with just one caliber, it would be .223. I've been scoping out the FAQ and putting together something of a wish-list. Damn, it adds up fast! Probably my biggest stumbling block right now is the lack of a reloading bench. Should I look for something marketed as a reloading bench? Or just a workbench from Sears? Or should I try and make something out of lumber from Lowes? What's the right way to start? Mike
  20. I've got a friend who shoots .223 AI in his AR. He's got a bunch of fire-formed cases & once-fired .223 brass to play with. I think you're right though. I may just use the 700P in .223 for a year or two and then think about something else in .260. It sure seems like SOMEONE should offer a 700P in .260 that accepts M14-style mags. Mike
  21. It's really amazing to read-back over this thread from the last 21-days. A LOT of what I read the first time just didn't make any sense to me. Now it's all starting to come together. I'm start to "get" it. Thanks again for all your help. Mike
  22. OK, I'm going to go tomorrow and purchase a Remington 700P in .223 Remington. I'm going to just forget about the whole detachable mag thing for a while. That was a big hangup. I may wind up moving to .223 Ackley Improved (AI) at a later date. Thank you all very much. I think my biggest problem is I need to walk before I can run. Baby steps. Baby steps. Just need to start with something and work from there once I have a clue. Mike
  23. I may not have been clear from previous posts, but: I've never owned a bolt-action rifle. I've only shot a bolt-action rifle a handful of times. I used to shoot a bolt-action precision air-rifle a LOT, but that's about it. My friends and I go camping in the mountains about every-other weekend in the summer and we do a lot of shooting up there. This rifle will see WAAAAY more use doing informal plinking than it will as a dedicated MOR gun. I don't currently reload, but I'm definitely going to be reloading in the future. I'll probably start reloading .223 first. That's part of my prejudice toward a bolt-action rifle in .223. Mike
  24. What about one of the Remington 700 "Mountain Rifles". They've got a lot going for them. Available in .260 with a 22" barrel. One is a laminated stock, stainless, with a hinged floor-plate. Probably a good candidate for a the HS Precision detachable-magazine conversion -- assuming the magazines are compatible with .260 (seems like they would be). They even have a DM version (blued, with hardwood stock). Decent 1:9" twist-rate. The "down side" is they're only 6.5lbs -- but add a scope, mount, rings, bipod -- we're probably up to 10lbs anyway, right? Why isn't this a good idea? Mike
