  1. I've been thinking about that very thing. I'm not particularly impressed with the HS Precision 5rd detachable box magazine in .223. It strikes me as a good idea, just poorly executed. How tough could it really be to do it right? How come they're the only game in town? If nothing else, you'd think Wilson Combat or JP Enterprises or Ed Brown or somebody would be buying AICS stocks, Remington 700 actions from Brownells, good 24" barrels in .260 Remington and a decent muzzle-brake and start up an assembly line. Say small runs of 50 or so. Ideally starting around $1500. They'd sell like hotcakes. Maybe an option or two -- Badger Ordnance mount, rings and a scope "package deal". Whatever. Sort of like the Remington 1100CM. Plunk down your credit-card, and you're off to the races. No muss, no fuss. Seems silly we have to pay $3K for a 5rd detachable box magazine. Mike
  2. Cool. I suppose in the long-run, I'd be better off to just have a gunsmith build me something with a Remington 700 standard short-action from Brownells and a good 24" barrel & brake. The lack of factory ammo for .260 Remington had scared me off in the past, but now that I bought this RL550B its got me thinking about it again. Mike
  3. The more I've been shooting my .223 bolt-gun, the more I notice the wind is ALWAYS blowing when I want to shoot. I've just started handloading the Sierra 69gr HPBT MatchKing in my 700P (1:9 twist) and I'm hoping to see some improvement over the 45gr "Varmint" and 55gr mil-spec ammo I've been shooting. I still suspect it's never going to be as good as a .260 Remington though. And of course its an excuse for a new gun... How do the two compare though? If the .260 is only 10% better, or "marginally" better in say a 10-15mph wind at 400yds then I can't really justify it. I know I'm not shooting anywhere near the capability of this gun in general right now. On a calm day I'm sure it can shoot much better than I can (yet). Just don't want to be at a HUGE disadvantage when its windy. Mike
  4. I originally bought a Remington 700P in .223 and the HS Precision 5rd box magazine conversion. Fully decked-out, it tops the scales at 14.0lbs. Even with the 69gr Sierra MatchKings it seems like the wind really pushes those little bullets around. Lately I've been eyeing the Remington 700 "Mountain Rifle" LSS in .260 Remington. Thinking maybe I could shoot that on windy days for a while and eventually outfit it with an Accuracy International CS short-action stock and 5rd .308 magazines and maybe a 24" barrel. Anyone happen to know if I can feed .260 Remington through .308 magazines? I'd think so, but... I just can't bring myself to spend $3K on an Accuracy International AE rifle. Mike
  5. I read about these a little when I was looking for something to play MOR side-matches. Nobody seemed to know anything about them though, so I shied away. Mike

  7. Nicely clarified. I put in quotes, to indicate I didn't mean explosion as in dynamite. I knew what I meant, but I should have said it differently. Thanks for the reply. Mike P.S. Anyone happen to know the exact date of M855's adoption, or have anecdotal evidence? Like "we had them in '87 when I was in".
  8. I was chatting with an Army verteran of Desert Storm at a dinner party tonight. I mentioned what I had read about M193 "exploding" upon transitioning to a different medium (from air to human body, for example). He sort of smirked and said "you don't REALLY think that's what happens, do you"....? Turns out he had retrieved some bullets from bodies in Iraq, and they were pretty much wholly intact. I was a little taken aback, before I considered he might be talking about M855 (steel core) as opposed to M193 (lead). Does anyone happen to know what was in general use during the first war in Iraq? Mike
  9. I noticed Impact Guns lists a "Tactical Pro" model for for $908.74. Is this a standard factory offering? Or are these just "regular" XD's that they sent to the Custom Shop? I don't see them listed on the Springfield web page.
  10. I started my wife with a S&W "airlite" .22. She shot it a little but mostly wasn't too impressed. She really liked my Browning BuckMark micro though, and buzzed through a few bricks with it. Then she moved to my CZ75B 9mm. She liked it so much, she "adopted" it as hers. Now she'll shoot my single-stack 1911's in 9mm or ~130PF .38S but mostly she just likes "her" 9mm. She's also likes the Remington 700P in .223. It's a lot of fun smacking am MGM prairie-dog auto popper out at 300yds. Mike
  11. I put one of the new Chip McCormick drop-in triggers in my Armalite. I think it's great. About a zillion times better than the factory trigger. Mike
  12. My .223 HS precisions mags drop free just great. Zero issues there. I don't know if maybe the HS Precision factory stock on the 700P is slightly oversize or what, but the rounds don't sit quite "high" enough. It's easy for the bolt to slide right over the top of them. Another issue I've seen, is as the round moves forward, the bullet hits the feed-ramp. When it does that, the round pivots in the magazine feed-lips. The front goes up, the back goes down below the bolt and forward progress halts. I've "solved" this by trimming down the feed lips a little at that pivot point, which helps. I've also noticed just pushing up on the magazine while I move the bolt helps -- can't move more that .001", but it's just enough to make a difference. Mike
  13. Seems like someone I know told you that... Basically I felt my choices were to buy SOMETHING and start playing now, or sit and wait a couple years until I could afford $5K for a Tubb 2000 or AI AW setup. The day I can afford $5K for a hobby bolt-gun setup may never come. I suspect what I've got is plenty good enough for me, for now. If the day comes that I feel undergunned, I'll re-evalute it. I'm just saying if you've got the money laying around, you can spend more and get more. Mike
  14. I bought it exclusively for MOR events on the 425yd range in Pueblo. With a 1:9" twist, 26" barrel, the 69gr Sierra MatchKings perform nicely at that distance. Mike
  15. Seems like someone I know told you that... I know. I know. At the time, the price of the AICS stock scared me, and I just couldn't see putting that kind of money into something I didn't expect to shoot that much. Actually, if the magazines would feed better, I'd be happier with it. That's my biggest complaint. It's not such a bad system. Just poorly implemented. It could have worked... Mike
  16. Just to reiterate what everyone else was already saying... The HS Precision detachable box magazine conversion and $75 magazines in .223 is NOT the way to go. Mike
  17. Hmm. I guess I'm not sure yet. I want to say it was $200 for the conversion with 1 magazine. Then something like $75/each for the 2 additional magazines. They're nearly flush-fit, and with the o-ring they take a firm push to seat. That might improve with use. The first one worked great. It took 4 or 5 of the additional magazines to find 2 that functioned. Actually, I never did get any more that functioned. I finally gave up exchanging them and took a Dremel tool to the feed lips. They seem fine now. I didn't care for the blind magazine, so I'd say the detachable box magazines are better than that. But probably not $350 better. I think the gun was like $799, plus $300 for Badger Ordnance base, 30mm rings and 1" ring reducers. Then the box magazine kit, and $200ish for a Bushnell Scopechief 4.5-14x50mm scope. If I had to do it all over again, I'd probably just buy another AR or a nice Limited pistol. Maybe I'll change my tune if I can get some MOA groups at 400yds. Mike
  18. How'd I know you were going to say that.... Yes, it's on my to-do list. But it's a large short-term outlay of cash for everything to convert my 550B to .223. Plus powder, projectiles and brass. Plus any additional case-prep tools. All for a gun I don't currently shoot that much. I've probably put 2K through my AR in the time I put 100 through the 700P. Lately Grace has been shooting it more than I have. Mike
  19. I guess I need to check the gun shows again. I'd been going pretty regularly and I thought the prices on OTHER things were way out of line. Really high on magazines, no discounts on firearms. Knives were generally more expensive than mail-order / internet places. I have gotten some good deals previous-year closeouts / discontinued models. I guess I never really looked that closely at reloading supplies in the past. I've looked at reloaded ammo, and again I thought the prices sucked. I skipped the last one here in the Springs. There's one in Denver in January. Mike
  20. I guess I don't remember what the groups looked like. Just that I wasn't "wowed" like I thought I would be. I just checked, and I've only shot 4rds of the 69gr and 6rds of the 68gr blue-box Black Hills I bought back in July. I guess I need to take it out and seriously try it. I _do_ recall that my best groups were with Winchester 45gr "varmint" value-packs from Wal-Mart. Mike
  21. I'm not (wasn't) ready to jump into MOR with both feet. I bought a Remington 700P, 26" barrel, 1:9" twist .223. Badger 1pc 20-minute scope mount, badger 30mm rings w/1" reducers. HS Precision 5rd detachable box magazine. Now I'm looking for some good "match quality" factory ammo and / or suggestions on handloaded ammo. For right now, I'm mostly concerned with targets at 300yds - 400yds. I've tried some blue-box Black Hills 68gr and 69gr and I wasn't impressed. Maybe it's me. Suggestions? (besides getting a .260 or .308) Mike
  22. I noticed Midway USA has Rainier 180gr RN FP, $60.95/K. NatchezSS has Federal match small-rifle primers for $16.95/K. Mike
  23. I bought an 1100CM this Spring. It came with a manual that included disassembly and cleaning instructions. Also some good info here. Mike
  24. Who makes a good, short-ish barreled semi-auto 12ga? I poked around the Remington website last night and all the 1100's had longer barrels (except the 1100CM, which is expensive). I did notice some 18" 11-87's on the RemingtonLE site. Mike
