  1. It does change the "feel" of the gun. I think if you read some of the other threads on guys shooting USPSA Major with .40 out of an STI based gun that 12 pound recoil spring is a common choice.

With the longer OAL and the 12 pound recoil spring the gun just felt "smooth" and came right back to my aim point when it cycled. For me, the heaver spring was much more abrupt when it cycled.

It's all about having the gun just return naturally to your point of aim. :D

  2. I got my Czechmate in February, it's runs flawlessly. it's reliable and shoots great. I shoot 5 matches a month in 3 states, 9,000+ rounds this year. I have not replaced one thing. All I did when I was looking at getting into open was watch all of the guys shooting 2011 STI/STV and the others, on the squads I was on at the different matches. This told me all I needed to know. If I get one of them I will be taping & racking at some time in every match, they just don't run. Mag's are pinky, you will be cleaning sometime during a match and they still may not run. My Czechmate just runs, If I drop a mag in the mud I will clean it, other then that maybe once a month or every other month I will clean them. In 9000 rounds I have cleaned My Czechmate twice. Some of the guys that I have shot with tell me that they have to clean their 2011, STI/STV after every match and their mags during every match. Some guys had to work on mags every stage or their gun was just not reliable. At the matches I go to a few of the other guys have moved to Czechmats, they told me they got tired of the constant problems.

I'm glad you like your gun but...

The blanket statement on 2011 STI/STV is uneducated. There are LOTS of STI/STV/CK... 2011's of many many flavors that run just fine. I shot with a bunch of them on Sunday. As far a mags go, MBX mags are run out of the package. :D

  3. I shot the first match with my STI DVC at Sage Pistol League yesterday. :goof:

Gun ran flawless with the 180 gn HP X-Treme's loaded to 1.180 OAL,Titegroup propellent and loaded into MBX Mags. I'd swapped the recoil spring to a Wolf 12 LB Variable. Match was about 150 rounds with quite a bit of RUN and GUN. I was pretty happy the gun ran 100%. It was my best finish in a long time - 1ST Limited and 5 OA.

Fiber Front with the solid black back sight is really nice to track. Part way through the match I started doing what I perceive as "flying" the Gun. It sort of a Zen thing for me were I finally relax and just get the gun to where I see what I need to see, trip the trigger and RUN!!! The cuts on the grip really work, my grip was nice and high on the gun and the texture gave me enough grip without hurting or hindering if I wanted to adjust my grip. :)

One stage had an empty gun start and the big magwell is SWEET, reloads felt great all day! One stage had a gun on table start, the magwell and Safety propped the gun up enough that it's really easy to get off the table! :D

I had a brain fart and FTE'd a popper on the first stage or I'd have been higher OA.

The DVC is a keeper! :D

Can I inquire as to what the 12# spring does? New to 2011's; only thing I switched out was the mag release to the Dawson's posi-lock release.

Not a gunsmith but I'll try...

Short answer - It changes the speed of the slide going forward so the front site doesn't dip for me.

Long answer - The stock spring is reported to be a 14 pound spring. The gun really is a "system" and changing the recoil spring changes the timing of the system overall. Too much recoil spring and the slide may not travel far enough back or dwell long enough for the magazine to get the new round up to be fed...it may also close the slide hard enough to have the front sight to dip. Too little spring and the slide may slam back and cause the front sight to lift more....hard on the gun and harder to follow the sight. It also may not provide enough energy to reliably strip and feed the next round.

Those are the extremes... You can "tune" the gun and the feel of the gun to the shooter and load...going up or down a couple of pounds with the recoil springs to make the gun work for best for you.

When I dropped in the 12 pound spring, with my load, the gun felt really smooth when it cycled and the sights settled right back on target for me :D

    Hope it helps :D

  5. I have some personal experience - 20+ years in both LE and USPSA. My experience is my time spent shooting USPSA saved me from serious injury in my one On-Duty shooting. I was able to draw and stop a threat attacking me - I'd guess the whole encounter was under 2 seconds. My partner wasn't even out of the holster.

    Skills are skills.

To the OP's question - if you're trying to be a better USPSA shooter, go take a class aimed at THAT. I took one a Looong time ago and it helped me a great deal. And I'm ready to go again. ;)

  6. I've bucked the trends in the past...

Single Stack .38 super when the first of the high caps showed up...

A Caspian frame high cap open gun when the 2011 was available

Para Hi Cap Limited gun in .45 rather that .40....

I'm done bucking trends. Could NOT get mags for the Caspian AT ALL for a very long time. Same now with the Para!

I finally - this month - bought an STI DVC Limited in .40. Needed mags, 3 days later MBX mags on my porch. :D THERE IS A REASON so many folks shoot the 2011 :D

What's the upside to bucking the trend?

Get a STI/CK/PT based gun and enjoy having all the aftermarket support. :D

  7. I'm using 7.7gr of CFE-P or 7.8gr of BE-86 pushing Zeros 125gr JHP for a PF of 174 on both. I think is more of grip thing. Tried today and it was better but the slide is not locking back on the last round.

You don't want the slide to lock back do you? Most Open/Limited guns are set up to NOT Lock back. I know the followers in my MBX mags are designed not to lock back. ;)

  8. I have BOTH the big Dillon Vibe cleaner and the FART. The FART is just plain BETTER. I don't deprime, just tumble, dry, load. It's not just cleaner, which is great, it's BETTER - no dust, better result and goes into the sizing die without lube just fine.

Tumbling with pins will clean stuff that the walnut hulls just won't touch.

    Here's an example

    Before

    E17A32C4-B9D4-4E7A-8C8F-8E9B5B2D1450_zps

    AFTER

    FDA84434-115F-4724-B97C-C767FF90617C_zps

Those are clean enough that I just load from there...no additional prep or lube required in carbide dies on my Dillon. :D

  9. Aftec extractor and mine just runs and runs

I thought about getting an Aftec for mine after seeing the stoppage in the pictures above.

When I pulled the extractor, I saw that all the correct angles had been cut and it was "okay" but not polished slick. So I got out the jeweler's rouge and polished it up. While I was at it, I did the equivalent of the "Glock .25 cent trigger job" -

Polished the tip of the disconnector

Polished the ramp on the disconnector that the spring rides on

polished the bottom of the firing pin stop where it rides over the hammer

Polished the tip of the sear spring where it rides on the disconnector

Polished the face of sear spring where it rides on the sear

Polished the trigger bow where it presses on the disconnetor and rides in the frame

My first thought when I do this sort of stuff is just like a Doctor "Do no harm" ->I did NOT remove any metal or touch the hammer, sear or frame rails. The places I polished are the same places you'd see wearing to a "polish" on a well broken-in gun. I just helped it along. ;)

None of this looked "bad" to start but I hopeful that the combined effect will help the gun be more reliable overall. :D

  10. I almost started this topic myself...

I'd guess somebody here knows what's up. If it's going to be at TSS, it's already done.

If nothing else speculation on what MIGHT get changed should be entertaining! :D

  11. In reference to Phoenix Trinity. If they have a minimum that is unfortunate. If a dealer has an FFL,State Lic where required and tax resale number. The dealer should be able to order a frame. The frames are well made My own gunsmith who has made many Open Guns for me also reccomends them. I have seen this type of restrictions before. It is unfair to the dealer and the shooter.

When I contacted PT a few weeks ago about buying one frame, they stated the following "Best estimate is 12-16 weeks. Unfortunately, we are no longer selling individual frames. Our minimum order quantity is 10. We are just too busy to process all of the single orders and are trying to stream line some things to increase productivity. My apologies for any inconvenience this may cause."

I then asked if they currently have any resellers of their frame and they said "Speed Shooters may stock them at some point. But we are so backlogged I’m not sure when that will happen. Sorry I can’t be of more help. "

Too much Business is a good "problem" to have!

Makes STI or CK an easy choice.... ;)

  12. I prefer the lighter bullets for minor because they are snappy and cycle the action faster.

Less weight change from a full mag to an empty mag, and less weight to carry around on your belt.

If your shooting a glock they tend to stay in the mags better too.

I have noticed the plastic glock magazines tend to be weak at the feed lips and cannot hold the heavier cartridges in the mag during heavy and fast rates of fire. Cartridges with heavy bullets tend to slip through the feed lips when the action cycles on my glock, and one or two rounds will fly out at times when its cycling the next round into the chamber.

Ummm - you need new mags. That's not "normal". ;)

  13. IDPA rules just completely turned me off. They seem to bring on this type of silly behavior.

I guess this is why IDPA is losing shooters to USPSA and 3 GUN.

Make something rule heavy and it becomes a turn off very quickly.

    IMO

    Thanks,

    Mike

Every once'n a while I think about giving IDPA a go... Then I read about stuff like this, truthfully, it doesn't make me want to go try it. ;)

  14. Thanks for all the replies. :D

Yesterday I ran 4.5's of TG and then the 4.6's, 100 rounds total. Gun really felt good. It ran MUCH better with the 12lb recoil spring and 1.180 OAL. I was pretty happy that it was running 100%. :D

Wind was 15 with gusts to 25... So I couldn't set up the chrono. I'd guess I'm "close" to major. There were no over pressure signs, I'll bump to 4.7 and get busy loading. If they are "under" when I get to chrono, I'll just use them for practice. Should be close! :D

  15. Stormy here today but I did run out and put about 100 rounds down range with the new load and the 12 pound recoil spring. Gun seemed MUCH happier with the 1.180. 100 rounds with no issues. Was just shooting a plate rack. Too windy to shoot any groups so I don't know how accuracy is with the new load but the gun seemed to cycle smoother and quicker. The load seemed to be a good match for the 12 lb. spring. Ran well enough that I'll take it to the next match! :D

  16. There is no "best" -> Everybody's perception of recoil and what's "soft" is different.

I've read everything I could find and in my DVC .40, I'm starting with an OAL of 1.180 - 180 HP X-Treme Plated - with 4.6 of Titegroup. I just swapped to a 12 pound Recoil spring. I don't think that will quite make Major, but I should be close. I'll test and work up from there....
