  1. It does change the "feel" of the gun. I think if you read some of the other threads on guys shooting USPSA Major with .40 out of an STI based gun that 12 pound recoil spring is a common choice.

With the longer OAL and the 12 pound recoil spring the gun just felt "smooth" and came right back to my aim point when it cycled. For me, the heaver spring was much more abrupt when it cycled.

It's all about having the gun just return naturally to your point of aim. :D

So I've had my STI since September 2015 and I've run it in 8-9 matches so far and here's what I've learned:

    • I have to chamber check on my barrel as the case gauge I have (Dillon) says everything is "Ok" but I had a lot of FTF's - Since checking on the barrel, i've had zero FTF's. I run mixed brass and Zero JHP 180 GR with 4.9 VV320 at a length of 1.165"ish"
    • There still seemed to be something missing for me but that changed when I literally had a buddy suggest, and give me a 12 pound spring to try during our practice session this week. The difference was palpable! The gun rocked back into position into what I'd say was "right on time" vs. the stock spring that I was running. To Chutist point above, my gun seemed to smooth it's way back into place vs. "slamming home" like it had done. I have my first match this weekend so we'll see how well this helps.

One of the nice things about the Tool-less Guide Rods is it's VERY easy to strip the pistol. I use the barrel as my check gage. I used to use a commercial Check Gage for my race gun just didn't trust it. The barrel is the best check in my opinion.

Still waiting on my DVC which will hopefully be here in January. Ive been getting worried with all the reviews saying the gun likes longer hand loads. I currently shoot Speer lawman 180 grain because its what my dept uses and its free. Ive ordered three mbx magazines hoping a tuned mag will feed better. Don't want to have to buy a Dillon reloader after dropping this much coin on a pistol.

I would still think of investing on a dillon. I have an STI DVC and I also get free 40 cal ammo at work but I only use it for practice and local matches. If you reload to barely making major, you will notice the difference and not want to shoot the duty stuff for any bigger matches.

Totally agree, I get .40 at work too. But if you run that you're not going to get the best performance out of the DVC. ;)

  2. So got to fire it today with the 9# spring and the thumb rest (GoGun one). Definitely made the it shoot flatter. The issue now is that I'm getting about 90% FTEject. I'm using a shock buff to. Should I remove it?

Did you remove it and go test again? I would expect it to run just fine with the 9 pound and no buffer...

  3. Oh I have 8 POUNDS of WAP... but I figured it wasn't the right choice for .40 limited. If I ever go back to OPEN, I suspect it will work just fine for Major 9!

I've got WST around, that's what I use for .45. If it works in the .40 too, I could just get a big keg and be set for a while...

I'd like to try N320 and Clays... If I ever see any for sale! ;)

  4. Yes. It only takes a second to change a mag. With a 32 shot max for a stage and 18 round mags you will only need one reload per stage. There ia always a spot where you can reload without costing you extra time.

Okay next time you are out for practice...set up two boxes. What's fair - 5 steps apart? Set up a drill where you can shoot one target run to the other box and shoot the second target. Do it with and without a reload between the boxes. Try it left to right and right to left. I think you are in for a surprise. :surprise:

Nothing is "Free". :excl: Higher class shooters may see less impact but I'd bet even a GM would tell you there's some measurable difference. :D I believe this idea of a "free" reload just because you are moving too is a fallacy. It may have LESS impact that a standing reload but it's not without cost.

I'm all for shooting whatever you want, but with full knowledge that those choices will impact your score.

  5. adding one reload is not going to hurt my score once.

If you choose to shoot .45, that's your choice but go in knowing your statement is true... It's not going to hurt it "once". It's going to hurt it on EVERY STAGE that requires that extra reload. Your choice, but go in with your eye's open, does have an impact. ;)

  6. So the Titegroup loads are working pretty well, but it seems like it's pretty "dirty" running. And who knows if I'll be able to find it when this pound runs out! :surprise:

What other powders are popular for .40 Major with 180 gn bullets? Always like to have options! :D

I have access to Winchester, Hodgdon and Accurate powders mostly.... ;)

  7. Nothing is spinning... no movement or sound on high or low. No indication of power having been applied at all. I will try Brian's suggestion and jumper it but I have to get some wire.

I've reached in and turned the collator by hand, it moves as I would expect. There is nothing in the unit so it's not overloaded. I've reached in the feed tube and tripped that switch a few times too. I pulled the top apart again and wiggled all the wires to make sure everything was connected.

  8. I'm trying to get my RL1050 back on line after sitting in the corner for 10 years. Got it bolted down, started cleaning and got to the point I wanted to cycle some cases though it. I turned on the case feeder... Nothing. So I got a hairdryer and checked the outlet, worked fine.

Pulled the cover off to see if there was a fuse or anything loose. Blew it out with compressed air and looked around, everything looked fine. No dangling wires. Checked the switch in the tube, I could hear the click and checked the contacts. Tried high and low.... nothing.

Is there a fuse or something I'm missing?

  9. My EGW Para in .45 with Grams pads can get a couple extra in it BUT... it never seemed to be enough to safely skip a reload. Many of the stages at my local club try to be single stack friendly - so 8 rounds...run...8 rounds. In theory, you could make it but one miss on a popper and that plan is out the window. My Para runs great - but don't fool yourself - for most of us mortals, reloads cost time on the clock.

Yes we play the game for fun... Finishing higher in class is more fun for me, so I bought a .40. :D
