  1. You guys have all sorts of facts confused here. 1) Wolf's "Silver Bear" is PLATED with zink (ie galvanized) just like some of the .45 ACP USGI training ammo cases we used to get after WWII because copper/brass was scarce & they reload just like brass. Provided the case is Boxer primed, it should reload just fine. 2) REALLY OLD Wolf .223 used the SAME laquer-type hard dry lub that they used on their military 7.62x39mm ammo for AK-47s. To everyone's surprise, the AR-15 turned out to have tighter chamber tolerances than the AK (who woulda guessed??). Result was: that OLD ammo jammed ARs like nothing else (oh how we laughed!). LAQUER 223 HAS NOT BEEN SOLD FOR YEARS IN THE USA. 3) Newer Wolf 223 uses a grey-color "polymer" coating which works just fine & dandy in ARs and IS FULLY RELOADABLE with boxer primers. Steel cases do not really "grow" in length like brass & probably do not need trimming after the 1st firing. Reloads made from steel cases (or Factory Wolf) is not the most accurate stuff out there. BUT - there's a good chance the cases are only 1x fired if you find them left behind. I don't uses the rusted ones (gee). No big loss if reload it once and you leave it lay (say - at a lost brass match). Can't say I notice the accuracy loss on those "arms-length" stages over high-dollar reloads. 4) Can't say anything about that Hornady steel stuff & I won't trust it until I've tried it.
  2. Agreed. Has not happened to me yet - but I have nightmares about "that day." Transparent/mesh walls are of some benefit here. RE: pre-COF chatter: less is more. Yup, and the response when the someone downrange hears "Make Ready" will be pretty quick and very loud. It can happen on a simple stage as well as one with tons of barricades / walls, etc.
  3. Tommy knows what he is talking about & he and the other FN shooters have backed it up with wins/solid performances at the 2 and 3gun shoots we have been holding at Silver Eagle Group in Ashburn. While it is not "my" match (I only run/design the USPSA handgun out there) I have volunteered to help out at 2 recent matches where the SCAR showed up. OP - to answer your question: yes - the SCAR is being used & seems to work well for 3gun. Price: some things to remember about FN - they are not only a major sponsors of the competitive shooting sports, they are also the suppliers for many of the MADE IN THE USA small arms that our brave fighting soldiers are fielding over seas to keep us safe here at home. Those facts carry a lot of weight in my book.
  4. . Is there experience as to what is "unrealistic"? How close does it have to be? Dunno how to define "unrealistic" - though "not humanly possible" comes to mind (still, why set boundries for ourselves?). A scorekeeper writing down an incorrect time or a timer not picking up shots could easily lead to "unrealistic" scores.
  5. Only ever seen that when short shells are being used e.g 65mm, 68mm shells and not the standard 70mm birdshot rounds - compare your shells to a 70mm one and that may very well solve that problem. I very much doubt its the shell stop spring, unless yours is severley damaged, I actually lightern those springs in guns I work on to make it easier to take rounds out of the gun magazine without having to rack them through the chamber and none of them have problems. Mine is also releasing shells onto the carrier when it should not do so. It prevents reloading while running between ports. My FN SLP is a Super X2 Mk-I from about 2004 or 5 (winchester). If anyone knows of a stronger spring (wolff perhaps?) I'm in for one. As far as the OAL of the shells I use - well, that is controlled more by what is on sale at Walmart as I no longer reload birdshot. I also developed problems with light strikes & I replaced the hammer spring with a Wolff extra power spring. Trigger pull now sucks - but reliability has been restored.
  6. My pleasure: I'll post this match announcement info for the benefit of anyone that wants to shoot USPSA, IDPA, 2 or 3gun at SEG: Simply go to the Silver Eagle website: Silvereagle-group.com Then go to the top bar, and click on "Training" then select "Schedule" from the drop down menu. You can also sign up for the email updates at the bottom of the page linked above. The procedure for match sign up has been to simply call Silver Eagle's main phone line no sooner than 2 weeks before the scheduled match and request a slot from the folks running the front desk (then handle sign-up for us). If the squad you want is full, please ask to be added to the stand-by list, since it has been common to have a few folks sign up who can't make the shoot due to emergencies.
  7. It was tough to watch that video of Eric Buell making the announcement; he looked as if he was about to cry. I do not think anyone could blame him since he seems to have been told that his life's work is now substantially over.
  8. I am not sure Nik; I think I agree with Flex here. What if a shooter showed up with something like a red9 Broomhandle or one of these in 9mm & gripped it around the magwell? Not sure that the way one grips the gun would define what the gun's parts are. What would you base the "gun use" argument on? This isn't a stage procedure, nor a division requirement (like holster position or mag limits), right? 5.1.10 is an equipment rule. Is there another applicable, or more relevant, rule? What does 5.1.10 mean? You're telling me that you don't see a foregrip on the blaster you're using; I'm telling you that I'm seeing you using the magwell as a defacto foregrip --- and we're headed to arbitration..... ....where you might prevail, or might not, depending on how you phrase your argument versus how I phrase mine. If you prevail at a National match, I'd bet that there'd be a rules discussion at the next Board meeting..... Was USPSA trying to limit a cosmetic feature (it looks like a foregrip) or trying to limit a functional one (shooters should be using one hand or both on the pistol grip)? There's the rub --- fore grip isn't defined.....
  9. Did not vote because the Wolfs I am using (older copper/gold color) are the ideal primer as far as performance (and particularly as far as cost). Have not tried the newer silver colored Wolf pistol primers so there is no evidence against Wolf as far as my experience. Prior to Wolf, I used Federal.
  10. Yeah, but Clays won't work for the OP because he's shooting a Glock & can't load any longer than 1.160" or so (too short for major Clays IMHO). Solo will work for a Glock though. AND its sigle base like V V. Its the economical alternative to N320.
  11. I thought of Saddam's guns when I saw the cartel guns; seems like the cartel's guns are the dime-store versions of Saddam's high-dollar factory jobs.
  12. Good grief. more blasphemy: link to cartel gun photos
  13. I really like this range and thought I would post it here. I have also turned a few friends on to it and they have joined as well. I currently do not have any guns that I would consider to be match quality. I have a couple of guns that I carry for defense and a fun little tactical 45 acp rifle that I have enjoyed shooting. (If I can get the parts I need from the manufacture) But I would not mind coming up and watching a match if that is possible. I think that would be fun to watch. Let me know what the deal is and maybe I will stop by and check it out. -Ray Spectators are more than welcome; just let the front desk know, and once on the range, just find any of us holding a clip-board or a timer & we will try to either pass off our duties & answer your questions personally, or find you an experienced person to speak with. As far as the guns & equipment we use in USPSA and IDPA, the majority of folks we attract at SEG tend to use stock or production guns; I have personally been using a bone-stock Smith and Wesson 9mm (the regular 5" gun) with the stock sights. I did not want to buy another holster for it so I am using an Uncle Mike's kydex holster that is intended for the Glock (I found that the S&W fits just fine). When most of my guns were in storage during a recent move, I used an old Glock 17 that I bought years ago for GSSF competition - it is also fairly close to stock though I added metal sights & some "skate-board" grip tape to the grip, as well as a lighter Glock striker spring & connector. As far as the IDPA side, my good friend Jay runs an excellent IDPA competition and he regularly attracts folks who shoot the exact same gun that they carry; IDPA is set up just for such situations. Jay works there full time and if you ask for him, he can do the best job of explaining the competitions offered by SEG. We also have several 1911 fans and they have their own "Division" to compete in. I guess my point is, nothing fancy is required to shoot (and win) either USPSA or IDPA at our match. Sure, we do have a few folks who shoot in the more "exotic" divisions with high dollar "race guns" (dots & all), but they are relatively rare at SEG. Hope to see you at a SEG shoot sometime soon. Douglas
  14. Thanks for the review, Ray! I am the USPSA club president at Silver Eagle Group; our club, the Silver Eagle Shooters (VA-20), is switching to Monday nights, and we will shoot on the 3rd Monday of the month. We are also switching to a 2-range format that allows 4 stages, larger stages and more shooters per 1-hour timeslot. In addition to monthly USPSA shoots, Silver Eagle also hosts an active IDPA club, as well as 2 and 3 gun shoots every month (all 3 indoor bays are rifle-capable). There are still a few time-slots open for 5 and 6 PM this coming Monday, October 19, 2009. Hope to meet you in person at a match soon. Regards, Douglas Johnson TY-44934 PS I will not be able to make the November match (due to the expected arrival of our second child in November), but luckily, I have the best crew of USPSA volunteers in the known Universe to back me up for a few months (thanks guys!!).
  15. LEAD FREE OR NON-TOXIC PRIMERS HAVE A 5 YEAR SHELF LIFE I am a little disappointed in all the jokes here about this topic, since non-toxic primers DO have a shelf life. Doug Carden pointed this out several posts above, and yet no one commented on it. Truth is, all common lead-based (ie lead styphnate) primers will NOT degrade & will probably be good long after everyone alive today is long gone. MOST primers used in the sport are lead-styphnate & they will last. But, that is NOT the whole story. It is also TRUE that there are lead free/non-toxic primers & ammo which DO EXPIRE after about 5 years, though it is NOT some sort of conspiracy. If you take a training course at the Sig Arms Academy in NH, the ONLY ammo allowed there is NON TOXIC ammo. That ammo has a primer which becomes inert after about 5 years; at the 5 year mark, about 5% of the ammo will be inert. Also, are there ANY LEOs here that are forced to train with such ammo? If so, they can confirm that the case-lots are marked: "USE WITHIN 5 YEARS OF MANUFACTURE" With lead-free/non-toxic ammo, each year, more of it goes inert. It is not an intentional property of the primer, it is a flaw that they have not been able to correct. Question is: could lead free primers ever be required by law the way that lead-free gas is required or lead-free steel shot is required? I do not know. Hope not. For any doubting Thomases out there, here you go - a link to one of the companies making such ammo. Click on the link. Then go to the PDF of the brochure - look at the bottom of that page: "SHELF LIFE: 3 YEARS" http://www.simunition.com/cartridges/green...training_en.php WHERE would this be required? Try taking a class on the INDOOR ranges at SIGARMS ACADEMY
  16. did you CC "Somebody that we don't need to talk about on the SHOOTING forum"? (nevermind. he would probably not reply either).
  17. In the late 90s, my ex had a 1980s Buick LeBaron that constantly broke down. Her dad liked to work on cars almost as much as he liked inevitable visits from his daughter while he fixed her car. He picked it out for her.
  18. Barrel length on that gun is . . .?? Several Finns were loading to IPSC rifle Major and their data is posted here - BUT, they were using AR-15 uppers in 7.62x39. With the lower power factor for rifle, you whould be fine working up a load with a chrono. Others have.
  19. Other than blanks, I can think of only ONE other possible firearms related use (though I have not tried it): fire-forming brass. DO NOT USE ANY PROJECTILE! (actually, none is required for such forming). Of course, less=more in any sort of risky venture such as this. Or pour it on the lawn - that is sure to "work."

that's weird - could have sworn I answered this yesterday. must have forgot to hit add reply here you go http://www.buffertech.com/stores/1/Glock_Accessories_C6.cfm

  22. October is pretty much the end of the season. Sometimes they have a November match - but it can be rather miserable depending on the weather. I run an indoor match. We shoot all year. Any indoor shoots in your area? (IDPA in particular lends itself well to indoors - though USPSA is also possible).
  23. Redding G-Rx "Push Through" resizing die is what he is talking about. Here is the link with photo: http://www.redding-reloading.com/ Or, if you are a new shooter, just use factory ammo. Factory length ammo will run in a Tanfoglio. In a 2011, not so much.
  24. This is a practical discussion, since it is possible that a newbie might show up for his/her first match with such a gun. On a related note, I had a relative newbie show up with a 5.7 last match. In no way, shape, or form does a 5.7 fit in any division of USPSA or IDPA. If steel were allowed at my club, I would have told him "Sorry. Can't let you shoot. Go to the cashier and get your money back - too bad about the long drive you had to make. You are not shooting tonight." But as it was, I realized this guy had been to a previous IDPA & USPSA and was a paying club member who simply wanted to shoot since he was starting to really enjoy the sports. Turning him away would not be the best option. Instead, we explained the problem, made sure he understood the rules problem his gun presented and let him shoot with the squad on this one occasion for no score. Everyone went home happy. If a newbie shows up with a "less than optimal" gun (or only the 2 mags that came with his gun), please consider accommodating them if it can be done safely & within the rules.
  25. OP: I have an SP-01 and it is a great gun - particularly with trigger work or at least a 16 lb hammer spring (really lightens the DA pull). W/ parts, it apparently can make weight. If you don't want to monkey with parts-scrounging & scales, just get the built-for-competition 85 Combat. It is called "combat" because its intended for "combat pistol competitions." Unlike the regular 75b, it comes WITHOUT the regular Series 80 type firing pin safety, it has a beavertail, a longer mag release, no mag break, ambi controls and adjustable sights.
