  1. You are an evil, evil man! Good thing I can remove the decapping pin on the Redding dies and re-hit the ones that are already primed.

Guess I'll do another sizing after the primer pocket prep. This won't mess up my chamfering?

  2. Talk to "the old man" (my Dad) about what could be the problem with the chrono and other than him reminding me that my odds of getting good readings go up when I remember to turn it on (thanks Dad) he reminded me that I'm shooting a big rifle now and that scootin' further away from the bench would be a good idea (sorry...I'm used to pistols and AR's).

Thanks to kgunz11, I'm in brass prep hell. Thank goodness I tempered that to 200 pieces last night. Resized and trimmed.

Tonight is inside chamfering, VLD chamfering and outside chamfering. If I get done a little early, I'll uniform primer pockets.

Tomorrow is uniform and deburr pockets, clean and prime cases.

    Friday is loading:

1 - OCW Test Loads - Part 2 (meaning take a rifle rest, stapler and scoot the chrono further away; all to confirm numbers & groups).

2 - OCW Load Seating Depth Test - Taking a preliminary load and loading it out between 2.85" and 2.90" to see if I get some tighter groups.

3 - Steel/Silohuette practice with the local club.

  3. I'll go with guns that I have/use:

1911 - Eldon Penner, Santa Rosa, CA

2011 - Open (Rusty Kidd); Limited (Bob Londrigan, Brazos Custom); Steel (Rusty Kidd)

AR's - Me, JP and Benny Hill, Triangle Shooting Sports

Shotguns - Benny Hill, Triangle Shooting Sports (I really need an O/U)

Bolt Rifles - 243 (George Gardner, GA Precision); 308 (Craig Maraviov, Woodland, CA); 300WM (???); 6AI (Don Golembieski, Kodiak Precision)

I try to support forum sponsors where I can.

  4. IF you're working, or have a medical condition, it's an alright practice IMHO. Otherwise, take your mags off and just wear the dang pistol.

That said, if you're shooting in Reno or "The Sand Pit" in Michigan, then the above statement is retracted and do whatever you can to keep the lapping compound (I mean sand) out of your gun, mags, and anything else of importance.

  5. FWIW, everything over 13 oz. is shipped Priority via USPS. The best bang for the buck is always their flat rate boxes. Just got 40#'s of once fired Lake City 308 brass for $30.

  6. I see no reason to have two different PF Floors for Standard/Limited and Open. Both @ 165 is fine, it works. If we keep reducing it, we'll get to bb guns yet!

Jim - Or we'll start carrying a second pistol, a carbine and a shotgun and dress funny...oh wait! :surprise::roflol:

  7. All the test loads ran well this weekend. Can't say the same for the shooter or the chrono (I didn't hit it...getting funky readings). <_<

So...rather than shooting the local match this weekend, I'll be at the range testing again.

ETA: If anyone's looking for a badass comp for a 308, the Surefire's are AWESOME!

  8. Nothing personal, but I'll be the first person to say that the crap is overpriced, especially after loading some test ammo using my RCBS Rock Chucker, Redding Dies and RCBS Chargemaster.

The first bullet I seated, OAL was 3.092. I wanted 2.850. Dialed it and to what should have been 3.000. Dead on. Dialed it to what should be 2.850. Dead on. BTW, 2.850 is just about the limit on feeding out of the Remington box mag (not DM...but the Badger is coming).

Filled the Chargemaster with powder. Calibrated it. Dispensed 5-6 charges of powder, just to get the cells "warmed up", with my Lyman, Dillon electric and balance beam on standby to check. Started loading my test loads and they were perfect!

The "magical" Harrel's powder measure states a 0.1 grain +/- accuracy with a throw. I get that performance on an unmodified Dillon measure on my 650, blowing as fast as I can loading 223 for 3-Gun. My 69gr. SMK load, when the barrel didn't have 10k on it, was shooting .25 MOA. It's opened up to about 0.6. Point being, that just 'cause it costs more and is in the Sinclair catalog doesn't always means it's the best. The ONLY thing I've seen that was SUPER SWEET in the way of powder measures is a Prometheus and well...you are paying for that, and it's worth it to someone.

I learned a VERY long time ago, that in order to shorten your learning curve and soften the damage on your wallet, find those that have done it and go from there. Bobby's helped me out and everything I've done has been stamp approved by him, Mike Voigt, Matt Burkett and other shooters I trust (and their trophy walls prove it). Heck...Bobby talked me out of loading 308 on my 650, until I got more comfortable on loading this stuff (and after seeing how long it took to prep 50 pieces of brass this weekend...sheesh...).

On a side note, the rounds look gorgeous that I did last night and it's going to be a great time at the range this weekend. I was a little nervous at the charges I was throwing 'til I saw that even my largest charge wasn't even at the top of the shoulder.

So...as for RCBS Chargemaster's and Redding Dies...I'm sold. Also, I think Chargemaster's really like (at least mine does) throwing 45.3 grains of Varget. It was spittin' those out SUPER fast.

  9. G17 or 34 will get you taken care of for relatively little investment and you can shoot both IDPA and USPSA Production as well as GSSF.

For the (theoretical) in versatility, go with a G22 or G35. You can shoot (and be competitive) in 2 divisions of IDPA, and every division of USPSA except Open.

    Where at in CA?
