  1. Absolutely...simplicity is your friend and why I never can stress enough that people get trained in this stuff. Here in northern CA, we're actually in pretty good locations for our outdoor ranges. However, our largest facility is an easy 20-30 minute helicopter ride (each way) from a level of care that can handle anything serious.

Carrying tons of gauze and Co-ban is definitely a great way to go. Like kimel said, EMT's are more than bound by protocals. Luckily Uncle Sugar didn't have those same things (within reason) on us.

Above everything else, Rule #1 of emergency medicine is that, "it's not our emergency". Meaning, stay calm and fix the patient...you're fine.

  2. Celox is exponentially better than Quik Clot. Probably the worst thing to happen to real trauma med care with regards to GSW's was the movie, "Shooter". Marky Mark can be as tough as he wants, but good luck pouring QC on yourself. You are too tough for me.

The first time I used it I had 2 large rolls of Kerlix between my gloved hand and the QC and it still was freakin' hot! As for needing surgery upon arrival, you betcha, but you're alive.

  3. My 50yd draw is about .2-.3 slower, but that's me spending a little more time paying attention to the target just that little bit more.

  4. I'm about half way through it and will finish it this week. It has really changed my outlook and I'm starting to see that I am shooter that does well and a lot of that is that when I go to a match, I have done the practice and therefore expect to do well. That's not based in arrogance but rather a personal and positive expectation. The difference I try not to force that image, but rather hold it, take it in and then just relax and shoot.

We shot a modified steel challenge last week and will second BE's read on the Steel Challenge in that it is pure shooting. You can learn SOOO much from 5, 5-shot runs and 200 rounds of ammo that it's incredible that more folks don't do this. When I would just shoot, the runs were smooth and therefore they just WERE fast. When I had a bad first or second run, there were times that I'd push to try and make up that bad run, completely not thinking that it's a throw away. Shoot the remaining runs the way you can. Relax. See the spot on the plate you want to hit, and just shoot the plate.

I'm going to re-read it and then from it, write a pre-fitness training, pre-dry fire, pre-live fire and pre-match affirming statement. Some nice mental and emotional cues to get my head where I believe I can be.

  5. For the new folks, and SM's around the world that want to get in this match, Linda is THE BEST when it comes to taking care of military service members wanting to get in to this match as well as EVERYONE that's on the waiting list. I RO'ed last year and I hope that I get in this year. I had an awesome crew to work with and will happily do it again this year (I just hope we can start a little earlier to last shots are not at 830pm...it was gettin' cold). :D

Can't wait to hear those words coming through the gate, "Welcome to Ft. Benning, Home of the Infantry, Follow Me!". I miss Airborne school.

  6. Tell him welcome home from his brother.

I will always remember when I landed at DFW for R&R. The only thing better was landing back inside the walls of Fort Bragg and calling Stefanie and hear my girl's voice and how happy she was that I kept my promise to her to come home safe.

Welcome home to your son and all of his brothers and sisters.

  7. jasmap,

Contact Russell at Cavalry Arms. They're trauma kits are the heat and their tourniquet design is pretty darn sweet. I keep a couple of "toss kits" in my aid bag, left over from A-Stan that compromised of an IV kit, tourniquet, Kerlix and a CATT that I would 'toss' to CLS's or ground medics when we arrived on scene.

If there's help or training that you or your team would like to receive, feel free to contact me any time.

  8. Yes, but repeated runs do effect the HHF in the database so they do indirectly effect you.

Really? Prove it... As near as we can tell, based on data gathered on the forum, etc, the HHFs in the DB haven't been adjusted since they were initially set. Otherwise, there are quite a number of classifiers that would have much higher 100% marks than they do...

Sure, USPSA gives lip service to adjusting them, but in practice, it simply doesn't happen.

(eta - I don't mean that to be combative... just that the notion that someone grandbagging is hurting anyone but themselves seems to be an urban legend ;) ).

Agreed. The best evidence is as Jim said when you have A-C shooters that beat Master and Grandmaster shooters. You run it and you either get it or you didn't. Anyone can have a bad day. That's how I lost a class win and a Top 5 at the Bay Bridge Classic. One gun malfunction and I zero'ed the second largest stage of the match.

Now, have I done the reshoot of classifiers? Oh yeah and made sure they never counted for score. Just for my own piece of mind.

  9. With recent events, I ran across this great quote:

    I BELIEVE

I believe in the supreme worth of the individual and in his right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

I believe that every right implies a responsibility; every opportunity, an obligation; every possession, a duty.

I believe that the law was made for man and not man for the law; that government is the servant of the people and not their master.

I believe in the dignity of labor, whether with head or hand; that the world owes no man a living but that it owes every man an opportunity to make a living.

I believe that thrift is essential to well ordered living and that economy is a prime requisite of a sound financial structure, whether in government, business or personal affairs.

I believe that truth and justice are fundamental to an enduring social order.

I believe in the sacredness of a promise, that a man’s word should be as good as his bond; that character — not wealth or power or position — is of supreme worth.

I believe that the rendering of useful service is the common duty of mankind and that only in the purifying fire of sacrifice is the dross of selfishness consumed and the greatness of the human soul set free.

I believe in an all-wise and all-loving God, named by whatever name, and that the individual’s highest fulfillment, greatest happiness, and widest usefulness are to be found in living in harmony with His will.

I believe that love is the greatest thing in the world; that it alone can overcome hate; that right can and will triumph over might.

    John D. Rockefeller
